Undergraduate Researcher of the Week: Grace Waterman

<Tagline>Blood pressure medicine and heat stress</Tagline>

Grace Waterman is a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
major who will graduate this spring. She is a member of the Biological
Sciences Departmental Honors Program, and a URA Scholar.

Title
of your research project: Testing the Effects of Entresto on
the Heat Stress Response of Drosophila melanogaster

Describe
    your project:

My project is a group project focused
on determining how Entresto, a blood pressure medication, impacts response to
heat stress in different ages and genetic backgrounds in Drosophila
melanogaster. We want to apply the results we find from our experiment to
predict how people taking Entresto will be affected by heat stress, like a heat
    wave.

Who is
    your mentor(s) for your project?

Dr. Jeff Leips, Department of
    Biological Sciences

I found my mentor when I was taking
BIOL 142. Dr. Leips discussed his research one day during class and it sounded
interesting. After learning more about his research online, I asked if I could
join his lab and participate in the research.

I chose Dr. Leips because I am
interested in the projects in his lab. I also chose the Leips Lab because
before joining the lab, everyone was incredibly nice and supportive. I could
tell it would be a great environment to do research in.

How did
you become interested in this project?

When interviewing to join the Leips
Lab, Dr. Leips told me about each of the projects being done in the lab and I
chose to join the Entresto group. My project is a further investigation of the
Entresto project from when I joined the lab.

What
has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected
    thing about being a researcher?

During my time as an undergraduate
researcher, one of the projects I worked on has had numerous setbacks. We have
had everything from controlled temperature room failures to the COVID-19
pandemic to equipment malfunctions. Having numerous setbacks can be hard but it
has taught me that research can sometimes go wrong, and you cannot give up.

What
has been the most rewarding part?

The
most rewarding part of being a researcher has been discovering my passion for
research. Before joining a lab, I was not completely sure I wanted to pursue
research in graduate school or as a career. After working in a lab, I found
research is what I am passionate about. Even when I encountered numerous
setbacks in my projects, I still enjoyed doing research.

How
will you disseminate your research (URCAD presentation, conference,
    publication, etc?)

My research is going to be presented
    at URCAD,
April 19-25. My group also hopes to write a paper about the research and
    publish it.

What is
your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

My advice to other students is to
never give up. When pursuing research, things often do not go as planned. You
cannot give up; keep trying and it will work out.

What
    are your career goals?

I plan to attend graduate school
after graduating from UMBC and earn a PhD in Biochemistry. I plan to focus on
drug design and develop medications to treat cancer. After graduate school, I
aim to work in the pharmaceutical industry and become a leader in the field of
    drug development.

Due to the COVID-related campus closure, URCAD XXV will be held online again this spring. You will be able to view presentations, watch films, see video of dance and music performances, view artwork, and interact with presenters during the asynchronous event.

Last April, 251 students presented their research and creative work, and thousands of visitors logged on the URCAD online via an interactive platform called VoiceThread. Nothing can compare to being together to be able to celebrate all of the research, scholarship, and creative work of our talented UMBC undergraduate students. Experiencing the live dance performances, being able to talk face to face with students about their research, or being able to take a ride on a kinetic sculpture are things that are meant to be experienced in person, and the energy of hosting URCAD on campus is irreplaceable. But last years online event provided a unique experience for visitors to explore the presentations and to interact with presenters in really meaningful ways. The online format also expanded URCAD to a global event- visitors logged on from as far away as Korea and the U.K.

Mark your calendars for the week of April 19-23, 2021 for URCAD XXV Online!

You can still view the presentations form 2020 here: https://urcad.umbc.edu/departments/

We will host several workshop to help students prepare their online presentations.

Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) features research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Student work is shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits, performances, and film. Over 300 presenters participate annually. Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research, or research that is part of the mentors on-going projects. They are from all disciplines, and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated. This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBCs commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.

All current undergraduates who have conducted research, scholarship or creative work in the last year may apply to present their results at URCAD. Mentors, fellow students, friends, family members, high school teachers and students, graduate school recruiters, and the general public are invited to attend.

Three CSEE faculty receive MIPS research awards

This post is adapted from a UMBC News article UMBC faculty, alumni entrepreneurs receive record-number of MIPS awards for tech collaborations written by Adriana Fraser.

Six UMBC faculty members have just received grants from the Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) program to develop new technologies with potential to grow the state’s economy. This is UMBC’s largest number of winning proposals within a single proposal round since MIPS began in 1987. The program connects University System of Maryland (USM) faculty and students with Maryland businesses. UMBC’s latest MIPS grantees include computer science and electrical engineering faculty Tim Oates, Chein-I Chang, and Anupam Joshi; Soobum Lee, mechanical engineering; Dipanjan Pan, chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering; and Vikram Vakharia, marine biotechnology. Among their industry partners are UMBC alumni entrepreneurs who are building businesses in Maryland.

Joshi, professor and chair of computer science and electrical engineering, received a MIPS grant for a cybersecurity collaboration with the startup CyDeploy. They are developing a platform that automates the quality assurance process for cybersecurity updates made to IT and “internet of things” (IoT) devices like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and health and medical devices. CyDeploy CEO Tina Williams-Koroma ’02, computer science, presented Joshi with the idea to develop a “cybersecurity-driven change management system.” The technology is based on and leverages the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to create a cloud-based replica of a company’s systems.

Williams-Koroma and Joshi’s group at UMBC developed a conceptual prototype. It shows the infrastructure and technology that would make the system feasible, combining off-the-shelf tools with novel research. “Increasingly, the government is now beginning to mandate security requirements around IoT devices. The longer-term vision that CyDeploy has is capturing the state of these systems, virtually recreating them and then running the security changes against virtual versions to see how the changes would affect those systems,” Joshi adds.

Malware is an ever-growing problem, single malware families have caused billions in damages, and the first direct death attributed to malware taking down a hospital has occurred. To detect new malware, machine learning is a naturally attractive approach. However, malware poses a number of unique challenges that have slowed the progress of ML-based solutions. In this talk, we will look at the task of malware detection from byte-based analysis, why it poses many challenging machine learning research problems, and progress we have made on these tasks by taking some non-standard approaches to machine learning: building shallow and wide networks instead of deep, handicapping the features of our model to make it robust, and using literal compression algorithms (LZMA) to find similar content.

Introducing Our First i3b Value: Radical Love & Belonging

<Tagline>There is no justice or belonging without love.</Tagline>

As a new department on campus, we have been working diligently to ground ourselves in the values that guide our work. We'd like to introduce the first of three umbrella values: radical love & belonging. While love is not a word used often in professional spaces, we believe that radical love & belonging is the driving force behind equity, inclusion, and social justice both in our UMBC community and beyond. Creating spaces for radical love and belonging cannot happen without radical self-love AND being committed to self-work. Read through this post, engage in your own reflection, and join us in our journey to creating space for radical love and belonging on our campus and beyond.

This post was written by Dr. Jasmine Lee, Director of Inclusive Excellence and Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging. She is really passionate about dialoguing across difference, fighting for racial justice, and laughing to tears!

So, what is radical love & belonging?

Radical love & belonging is about a pursuit of justice, inclusion, and equity in the name of love. It is action oriented and focused on creating spaces where people can live and belong as their whole selves. Radical love and belonging honors the inherent dignity in all of us and centers "ubuntu" beliefs - I am, because we are.

Pursuing an ethic of radical love is challenging when you feel dehumanized, invalidated, harassed, ignored, or targeted because of who you are. Radical love does not discount righteous anger, nor does it ask us to remain silent in the face of injustice. Instead it asks us to love justice more than we hate oppression. To love humanity, more than we hate discrimination. To pursue revolution and social justice in the name of love for humanity, over retaliation or hatred.

"There can be no love without justice...abuse and neglect negate love. Care and affirmation, the opposite of abuse and humiliation, are the foundation of love. It is a testimony to the failure of loving practice that abuse is happening in the first place." - bell hooks

Radical Love in Practice

Interrogate... Pay close attention to your behaviors and your actions, in what ways are you causing harm?

Righteous anger... Feel the feelings, while striving to hate the action, not the person.

Call-in... Be brave and courageous, as you call-in family and friends around harmful behaviors that should be called-out.

Speak truth to power... Name your truth and amplify the needs of others

Act... consider your spheres of influence and use your privilege and power to act: vote, protest, lobby for policies, or engage in financial activism.

Accountability and responsibility... Consequences, accountability and responsibility are all necessary aspects of radical love.

"Being a victim of oppression in the United States is not enough to make you revolutionary, just as dropping out of your mother's womb is not enough to make you human. People who are full of hate and anger against their oppressors or who only see Us versus Them can make a rebellion, but not a revolution. The oppressed internalize the values of the oppressor. Therefore, any group that achieves power, no matter how oppressed, is not going to act differently from their oppressors as long as they have not confronted the values that they have internalized and consciously adopted different values." - Grace Lee Boggs

Radical Love in Practice:

Self-love... love yourself as you are - you are enough!

Self-work... learn about your own story, privilege, and experience with oppression; actively work to unlearn and undo harmful narratives and exclusionary practices.

Listen... Consider views and lived experiences that are different from your own.

Imagine...imagine a world more just, more free, and more equitable; we cannot pursue what we don't believe is possible.

Both/And... Create space to hold multiple truths at once; Strive to understand the "both/and" over the "either/or".

Rest... Actively engage in self-care and community care; "Your existence is the resistance" - you/us being well matters.

"It's a radical love...That love drives the dream of a world where black lives matter and therefore all lives matter. Asian lives matter, Latino lives matter, Muslim lives matter, gay lives matter, poor lives matter, and old lives matter. It is a world in which we value the woman in a hijab, and the man in a kippa, and the atheist. Where we realize we are a human family and we cannot function without each other." - Rev.
