Intern of the Week: Sahar Mahate for Biology and HAPP!

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

As lab research shifted online, my responsibilities changed a lot. When I was working at this lab in person, I injected tumors into the tibias of live animal models, operated technology for X-rays and ultrasounds on animal models, completed stress experiments and necropsies on mice and rats, and performed western blots, cell cultures, and DNA methylation analyses. With virtual work, there was a lot more focus on literature review and data analysis. We would have meetings where research was discussed, and I would be assigned specific topics to present on. We also began using a new proteomic analysis program to identify and compare pathways of primary osteosarcoma tumors and secondary pulmonary tumors to determine how commonly upregulated pathways associated with pulmonary metastasis in osteosarcoma can be inhibited. My responsibility was to work with the other undergraduate researchers in the lab to figure out how the program worked, use it to analyze the data, and present relevant findings at lab meetings.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

This is a research lab I've been working at since high school, and have continued to work with throughout college.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

This summer, I really enjoyed being able to take charge and work on an independent project with the proteomics analysis program to contribute to the lab research. It gave me the opportunity to collaborate with other undergraduate colleagues to teach ourselves something new and to share the knowledge with the researchers in the lab, as the program was new to all of them as well.

Do you have an interest in Becoming a Nonprofit Leader?

<Tagline>Apply to be a Paid Shattuck Intern w/a Nonprofit by 12/4</Tagline>

Do you have an interest in Becoming a Nonprofit Leader or Social Entrepreneur?
Are you ready to intern with a Nonprofit or Social Venture this Spring?

If yes, apply to the Shattuck Family Internship Program for Entrepreneurship Innovation and Social Change.

The Shattuck Family Internship Program for Entrepreneurship Innovation
and Social Change prepares UMBC students for the rigors and rewards of
entrepreneurship and social innovation. This program places
highly-motivated students from diverse backgrounds in mentored
internships (remote and/or onsite) to better prepare them to launch
nonprofit or social ventures. Students get training and experience to
empower them to become the next generation of social
entrepreneurs–working largely in the not-for-profit world, developing
and delivering innovative solutions to some of our region’s most urgent
    social problems.

Internships last one semester (15 weeks) and students will work, on
average, 8 to 10 hours per week. Students receive a stipend of $1,500
toward their compensation. In addition to the internship, students
engage in projects and activities that further expose them to the social
     entrepreneurial mindset.

    Why Participate?
- Earn a competitive stipend of $1,500
- Gain valuable experience in your career field by interning 120 hours over the course of the semester (8-10 hours per week)
- Be exposed to the knowledge, skills, and mindset required to successfully launch and manage a nonprofit/social venture
- Develop a network of contacts in the nonprofit community for future references and opportunities
- Apply classroom knowledge in a realistic work environment and apply lessons learned in the workplace to academic coursework

TO APPLY:
Interested students are asked to submit a Resume and a Cover Letter answering the following questions:
Discuss your interest in both entrepreneurship and this intern program.
What has been your entrepreneurial involvement thus far such as
coursework, seminars, etc. (if applicable)? What type of nonprofit would
you like to intern for and why?

Your resume and cover letter can be submitted via UMBCworks, position 9320107

This talk will discuss data and results from the first nationwide survey of cybersecurity among local or grassroots governments in the United States, examines how these governments manage this important function. As we have shown elsewhere, cybersecurity among local governments is increasingly important because these governments are under constant or nearly constant cyberattack. Due to the frequency of cyberattacks, as well as the probability that at least some attacks will succeed and cause damage to local government information systems, these governments have a great responsibility to protect their information assets. This, in turn, requires these governments to manage cybersecurity effectively, something our data show is largely absent at the American grassroots. That is, on average, local governments fail to manage cybersecurity well. After discussing our findings, we conclude and make recommendations for ways of improving local government cybersecurity management.
