Undergraduate Researcher of the Week: Susan Afolabi

<Tagline>The roles of Ferritin in cell migration</Tagline>

Susan Alfolabi is a senior Biology major, with a minor in Chemistry. She is an LSAMP participant, and a URA Scholar.

Title of your research project: Characterizing the effects of ferritin on ovarian cell migration in Drosophila melanogaster.

Describe your project:

My research focuses on the roles of Ferritin in cell migration of migratory cells known as border cells in drosophila melanogaster. Ferritin helps to store iron in a non-toxic form in cells and my project focuses on investigating how the ferritin protein complex affects cell migration as well as exploring what transcription factor binding sites are present within the ferritin genes locus to understand how it may be regulated in fruit flies.

Who is your mentor(s) for your project?

My mentor is Dr. Michelle Starz-Gaiano from the Biological sciences department. I found my mentor while I was taking her class (cell biology) and I chose to work with her because I was fascinated and interested in cell and developmental biology processes and I believed I would be able to learn a lot by working in her lab which I am.

How did you become interested in this project?

I became interested in this project because I was curious about cell migration and underlying biological processes that regulate it, and the role of ferritin was unique and fascinating to me and to learn about in cell migration.

What has been the hardest part of your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?

The most unexpected thing about being a researcher would be being able to think and work independently. The hardest part of my research would be being able to interpret and expand on results that were not expected and also to be able to improve the way I come up with questions to explore.

What has been the most rewarding part?

The most rewarding part is when everything comes together nicely and I understand how it relates to the bigger picture. There is a sense of accomplishment that motivates me to take on more tasks with my project.

How will you disseminate your research?

I will be presenting at URCAD in April. I will also be presenting at the USM conference as well as ABRCMS this year.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Be open, passionate, and actively involved in your project. Also if you have difficulties finding a mentor, keep trying, and stay open to opportunities.

What are your career goals?

My career goal is to become a biomedical scientist.

UMBC INTERN WEEK, Day 5: Make the Most of Your Internship

  <Tagline>Succeeding on the job, earning credit/transcript recognition</Tagline>

Ahhh, you've finally landed your dream internship. Now you can relax, right? Not so fast. You have a new task: Impress your employer so much, they won't want to lose you when the internship is over.

STANDING OUT

Many organizations regularly make job offers to graduating interns. It's also common for employers to keep on an intern as a part-time hire, especially if they are still in school. Even if your employer isn't hiring at the moment, you'll still want to ask your supervisor (and possibly other colleagues) to serve as a reference during your job search. They may also be able to help you land a job at another company... IF they know you will represent them well.

What makes an intern stand out? Show your dedication. Be on time, meet your deadlines, and communicate professionally with your supervisor. Realize that you have a lot to learn, but don't be afraid to offer your ideas. Ask lots of questions. And when you see something that needs to be done, however small, take the initiative to accomplish that task. Employers will remember interns who made their jobs easier.

EARNING CREDIT & TRANSCRIPT RECOGNITION

Another way to make the most of your experience is to earn credits toward your UMBC degree. The Career Center can help you determine if this option is available for your major/program. Students of all class levels and majors are also eligible to have their experience noted on their UMBC transcript through the zero-credit, pass/fail Intern Success Practicum. The Practicum not only provides an internship, co-op, or research experience transcript notation, but also professional development, support from a career advisor, and a performance evaluation from your internship supervisor.

EMPLOYER TIP OF THE DAY: "Think of your internship like a three-month job interview. We want to see who will rise to the occasion as a strong candidate for full-time hire."

IMPORTANT: Name Change for the Women's Center

<Tagline>Take our quick survey and help us decide on a name!</Tagline>

Since 2017, the Women's Center at UMBC has been in discussions about changing our name. Our foundations as a women's center are important to us, but as we develop and grow as a center, we must also reflect on whether "women's" center is the best way to describe our department.

Is "women" too exclusive a category to contain the work that we do?

Does it create a barrier for those who should have access to our resources but might not feel a sense of belonging under the title of "women" (e.g. male survivors, transgender and non-binary folks, etc.)?

Our center has grown since its inception in 1991 and as we prepare for our 30th anniversary (coming in Fall 2021!), we must also take stock of who we are, what we do, and how we want to continue to build this incredible community. With this grand birthday, we are taking the time to really think critically about all of the birthdays to come and who we want to be.

UMBC INTERN WEEK, Day 4: Interviewing!

<Tagline>What to Consider When Preparing for the Interview!</Tagline>

So, you’ve decided it’s time to gain some
real-world experience by landing a great internship in 2021. However, Interviews
are often the most important decision-making component for an employer, so
making sure you’re prepared to do your best is part of your career development.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Knowledge is power, and in this case, your competitive edge
when demonstrating your value to an employer. Knowing about their business, mission,
industry, and products or services shows enthusiasm and helps to build your
    personal brand.

PLAN THE DETAILS

How can you best prep for your interview? Have your résumé
& reference list handy. Also, plan out your professional outfit and get
it pressed/cleaned. If in person, figure out a clear path to your destination or
if virtual, double check that your software (Zoom, Webex, and etc.) and
hardware (web camera, mic, and etc.) are operating and up to date.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

The potential for interview success is exponentially
increased by reviewing and practicing your responses. Interview questions vary
depending on the type of interview, but there are some questions that everyone should
be prepared to answer. Practice is key. But don’t sound like a robot!

TIP OF THE DAY:

“A super important step
is to send a letter and/or email thanking the employer for their time!”

UMBC INTERN WEEK, Day 3: Internship Search Process

<Tagline>Are you Conducting an Effective Search?</Tagline>

Have you had trouble finding an internship in the past?
Follow these steps to obtain your dream position!

Step
1: Tailor your resume to fit your industry AND the job. A one size fits all resume simply won’t make
you stand out as a candidate. Make sure to pay attention to key words including
skills and experience listed in the job description. Incorporate those into the
way you describe your own skills and experience. Make it OBVIOUS that you’ve
got what the employer is looking for!

Step
          2: Network. Networking
is noted as one of the most successful ways of finding a job or
internship. Career fairs (and other events) are the way many companies seek
to hire students just like you. Also make sure to take advantage of LinkedIn
and your personal circle to learn more about breaking into the industry. Remember,
          who you know matters!

Step
3: Keep a detailed list of all jobs applied for. An organized search is extremely important! Create a document that includes job
title, company name, date applied, closing date, and job contact for every position you apply to.

Step
4: Follow up on the application. Most
candidates passively pursue a job search by waiting for the employer to reach
out. YOU can be ACTIVE in your search by sending a polite (and succinct) note
to reiterate your interest in the position. You can do this by emailing the
company contact listed in the job description or simply searching for a recruiter
          on LinkedIn.

Step
5: Use a variety of job search tools. UMBCworks
is the best place to start! We
know that employers who post on UMBCworks are
interested in UMBC students! From there you can broaden your search to LinkedIn
and other job boards that are specific to your industry.

TIP OF THE DAY:"The secret to getting
ahead is getting started."― Mark Twain

READ/WATCH THIS:
