Aiman Raza takes flight in "Birds of the World"

Author Spotlight! Aiman Raza from UMBC

Aiman Raza, University of Maryland, Baltimore County
August 14, 2020

The Omland Lab at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Aiman Raza is on the far left. Also pictured on far right, URA Scholar Jonathan Sikora.

As many academic institutions look towards an unprecedented fall semester, educators across the world are searching for agile ways to engage their students both virtually and in-person, and to help them build practical skills and experiences.

Birds of the World is working with several educators and institutions to help students produce revisions of species accounts. Revising an account can be a fantastic way to get students to apply practical skills like literature searches and scientific writing to something tangible; and to get them thinking, and publishing, like an ornithologist.

Aiman Raza is an undergraduate at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and has been working with ;Dr. Kevin Omland on the critically endangered Bahama Orioles (Icterus northropi). Recently, Aiman led a team of authors on revisions to the Bahama Oriole species account in Birds of the World, and in this blog post, she discusses her work and how she became involved in this project.

My name is Aiman Raza and I will be a junior at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. I am majoring in biological sciences with a minor in environmental science. I have been an undergraduate research assistant in Dr. Kevin Omland’s lab for about a year now studying the critically endangered Bahama Oriole.

Aiman Raza is a biological sciences major at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She is an undergraduate research assistant in Dr. Kevin Omland’s lab.

When I was a freshman, I attended the biology department open house and heard about some of the research undergraduates were involved in. The work that stood out to me the most was the Bahama Oriole Project which Dr. Omland runs along with Shelley Cant from the Bahamas National Trust. I was a little apprehensive about approaching a professor as a freshman, so I was excited to see that Dr. Omland was teaching the Ecology and Evolution course I was enrolled in for the spring. I made an effort to introduce myself to Dr. Omland and express my interest in his research. I became an undergraduate research assistant in the fall of 2019 and have worked on a couple of projects since then.

I have researched hurricane history in the Bahamas to see if past storms possibly had an impact on extirpating the Bahama Oriole population on Abaco island. I worked on writing the Wikipedia entry for the Hispaniolan Oriole and Bahama Oriole. I have recently finished revising the Bahama Oriole species account on Birds of the World. I applied to the Bahama Oriole Project for the summer of 2020, but that was unfortunately canceled. I am hoping to go next summer, and I am curious to study the song of this critically endangered oriole to analyze age-specific bird song to discover whether there is a difference in song rates between age classes. Currently, I am assisting Ph.D. student Michelle Moyer with her analysis of song rate differences in the local Orchard Oriole.

Being part of a research lab on campus has helped me grow both personally and academically. I am excited by the work we do and hope to do a research project involving fieldwork of my own. As a minority woman, I want to encourage diversity and inclusion in the sciences, especially ecology and wildlife conservation. I am currently the president of UMBC Greenpeace, an environmental activism organization focused on policy change. I am passionate about birds and wildlife and am pleased with having many opportunities to explore my interests at UMBC.

You will also have the opportunity to upload a profile picture and provide the link for your LinkedIn Profile.

New Website Link: Resources for Working Parents & Caregivers

The Women’s Center supports working parents and caregivers through advocacy, education, and resource sharing. When faculty, staff, and students are able to continue to meet their family obligations, they are better able to foster a sense of well-being and reach their fullest potential. To our UMBC caregivers juggling remote work and learning with caretaking responsibilities, we see you, we believe you, and you matter.

Working in partnership with the Provost Office, we are committed to providing you greater access to resources and support specific to UMBC and the broader Maryland community, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of these resources are also available to our students. Please review the resources via this new website and let us know if you have any questions or would like to schedule an individualized support meeting with someone on our staff.

We know this website won't fix the complexities and stress that come from having our whole lives happening in one place at the same time which requires juggling of work, learning, teaching, caregiving (and more!) ... but we hope it may alleviate an extra google search here or there or get you connected with a support system you may not have yet.

Again, we'll say it: To our UMBC working parents and caretakers: We see you. We believe you. You matter.

We investigate the problem of automating the development of adaptive chosen-ciphertext attacks on systems that contain vulnerable format oracles. Rather than simply automate the execution of known attacks, we consider a more challenging problem: to programmatically derive a novel attack strategy, given only a machine-readable description of the plaintext verification function and the malleability characteristics of the encryption scheme. We present a new set of algorithms that use SAT and SMT solvers to reason deeply over the design of the system, producing an automated attack strategy that can decrypt protected messages entirely.

Matthew Green is an Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins Information Security Institute. His research includes techniques for privacy-enhanced information storage, anonymous payment systems, and bilinear map- based cryptography. He is one of the creators of the Zerocash protocol, which is used by the Zcash cryptocurrency, and a founder of an encryption startup Zeutro. He was formerly a partner in Independent Security Evaluators, a custom security evaluation and design consultancy, and currently consults independently. From 1999-2003, he served as a senior technical staff member at AT&T Laboratories/Research in Florham Park, NJ. email: *protected email* Dr. Green writes a popular blog on applied cryptography, A Few Thoughts on Cryptographic Engineering, A Few Thoughts on Cryptographic Engineering

Both of our offices are dedicated to providing support to veteran students at UMBC. We recognize that this is an unprecedented time in higher education and the world at large. As such, we want to outline some basic information about the services offered by both of our offices.

Programming for Veteran Students through OCSS

Throughout the fall semester, OCSS will be hosting a variety of events for our veteran students. One of these is “Coffee and Conversations”; this is a series of conversations around topics related to the veteran community at UMBC. C&C is a great opportunity for veteran students to connect with one another while learning about different resources that can support them through their educational journey. Some of our upcoming events for the semester include Hail & Farewell, our send-off for graduating veteran students, and collaborative events with various organizations focused on veterans. OCSS not only works on behalf of veterans, but also adult learners (undergraduate students 25 years or older), commuters, and transfer students. If you are a part of any of these populations, we would love for you to take part in our events. You can find more information at ocss.umbc.edu.

If you’re looking for another connection to the veteran community, consider becoming a part of the RetrieVets student veteran association. RetrieVets regularly meets and holds events throughout the semester. If you would like more information, please email retrievets@umbc.edu and follow them on myUMBC.

General Information about UMBC’s Certification Process

For veterans making use of the GI Bill, the Registrar’s Office is dedicated to ensuring that you are aware of our process and when you can expect to receive your funds. We’ve included some general information to answer some of our more frequently asked questions.

Where can I find the appropriate form to submit my certification?

You can find the submission form here. This Docusign form is the only method to submit your certification; paper forms are no longer accepted.

What role does UMBC/VA play in the GI Bill process?
UMBC certifies enrollment and mandatory tuition and fees and provides this certification to the VA. Based on this certification and your eligibility, the VA disburses your benefits. Please note that the VA pays only for classes that are required for a student’s degree program. Students must submit a certification form for each semester in which they are hoping to use VA benefits. Because the VA issues benefits based on what courses are being taken an updated form must be submitted if a student adds or drops courses so that the Registrar’s Office can provide updates to the VA.

What is the timeline after I submit my certification forms to the Registrar?

Students are strongly encouraged to submit certification requests as soon as registration has occurred for the term being requested. For example, if a student registers for spring classes during advanced registration in November, a form should be submitted at that time rather than waiting until the registration deadline in early February. This allows us to submit initial certifications for book and housing allowances as soon as possible. A new certification from should be submitted when a schedule adjustment (i.e. adding or dropping a course) occurs.

Initial certifications (credit hours) are submitted for book and housing allowance within 7-14 business days of receipt. Final certification, including all mandatory tuition and fees, is submitted after the add/drop period when schedules for the term are finalized. This helps mitigate overpayments/debts being created with regards to tuition/enrollment changes being made. The VA generally takes 3-4 weeks to process claims. While there are no deadlines for submitting VA Certification requests, students should keep in mind that the start of Fall and Spring semesters are peak certifying times and therefore should expect delays in addition to normal processing times if requests are submitted late.

How can I receive updates regarding my benefits?
Students receive an email from The Registrar’s Office to confirm our receipt of a certification request and again when initial certification is submitted to the VA. The VA also sends an automated notification every time they receive an initial, final, or updated certification. In addition, students can contact the VA for inquiries regarding first time application/activation of VA benefits, percentage of eligibility, months of entitlement, specific questions regarding their benefits, and transfer of entitlement.

Students can contact The Registrar’s Office for inquiries about how to use VA benefits with UMBC, VA certification requests, and payment inquiries.
