Prof. Tülay Adali receives prestigious Humboldt Research Award for advanced data analysis

UMBC’s Tülay Adali, professor of computer science and electrical engineering (CSEE) and distinguished university professor, has received the prestigious Humboldt Research Award. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation describes the award as presented to scholars “whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements in the future.”

Tülay Adali. Photo courtesy of Adali.

Adali is the director of UMBC’s Machine Learning for Signal Processing Lab. Her research focuses on developing flexible methods for data fusion. These innovative methods enable researchers to extract powerful features from multi-modal data by letting them fully interact with and inform each other.

A main application area of her work has been medical image analysis, where these features are used in diagnosis as well as treatment planning and evaluation. Adali and her research collaborators are also exploring applications of these methods in remote sensing, misinformation detection, and gesture and video analysis.

A years-long research collaboration

Humboldt Award recipients spend up to one year conducting collaborative research at institutions in Germany. Adali plans to continue to work with her longtime collaborator Peter Schreier, who is based in Paderborn University. Through a research connection that has spanned many years, Adali says that her lab and Schreier’s continue to have wonderful synergy.

Together, Adali and Schreier have worked to address problems such as data-driven discovery of relationships in multi-modal data, and in particular, when the sample sizes are small. “This is a key practical problem in many applications, especially in the medical domain,” Adali shares. She notes that this provides an important starting point for their current work.

“Things are moving along, even though I could not travel this summer, as we started having weekly research meetings between our groups,” Adali says. “This is a valuable experience for my students. In the past, we had hosted Schreier and his students here at UMBC, some of my students had met Schreier and his students at conferences before, and these initial physical connections matter. I am hoping we will all be able to travel again, soon.”

Receiving the award

As a Humboldt Award recipient, Adali was invited to attend a gathering in June with her fellow awardees, hailing from universities around the world. Due to COVID-19, the event was moved online. Awardees had an opportunity to meet the German president virtually as part of the event.

While she wishes the event could have been held in person, Adali says that it gave her an exciting opportunity to connect with other Humboldt awardees and learn more about scientist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt.

In 2015, Curtis Menyuk, professor of CSEE, received a Humboldt Award.

Happy First Day of Classes UMBC!

Happy First Day of Classes UMBC!

Today is August 27th, 2020 and we celebrate our first day of classes at UMBC. The Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion, and Belonging (I3B) would like to take this moment to welcome all of our new students, faculty and staff and say welcome back to those of us that are returning to this new and virtual environment.

This year has indeed presented us with many challenges. As global citizens, we have all experienced numerous and tremendous losses. Many of us are still processing complex emotions mixed with the anxiety and fears of not knowing exactly what is to come.

Even in the most difficult of moments, there is still so much to celebrate. UMBC is quite literally a community of people from all walks of life with varied experiences and interests. We are a growing community of students, faculty, staff, administrators, instructors, scientists, activists, carpenters, economists, advocates, researchers, athletes, mathematicians, artists, musicians, electricians, community organizers, techies, archivists, curators, veterans, counselors, maintenance staff, engineers, gamers, public safety officers, cooks, servers, managers, educators, librarians, magicians (yes, magicians), healthcare practitioners, cashiers, entertainers, lawyers, and so much more.

We know that this is not the first day that any of us imagined. We know that (in this very moment) there are more things that are wrong with 2020, than are right. We recognize that we are all juggling complex emotions and very difficult realities. However, if there is anything you get from this message, it's that we are ALL in this together. You are not alone in this. We hear you. We see you. We welcome you.

Happy First Day of Classes Retrievers!

New Way for Students to Indicate Chosen Name, Pronouns

Dear UMBC Community,

The UMBC Office of Equity and Inclusion is pleased to announce the implementation of a new self-service pathway for students to update their chosen name, pronouns, and gender identity in University systems. Students can now log into their myUMBC profile and update this information. This process is optional and voluntary. Students can also choose to share their identification as a member of the LGBTQ+ community for the purposes of support and outreach.

Students’ chosen names are already provided to faculty and staff through University systems, such as PeopleSoft and myUMBC. In January 2021, students’ pronoun and gender identity information provided through this process will also be made available in the same way.

The self-service process builds on prior work enabling students to indicate their chosen name in University systems, and we hope that it makes updating names and pronouns faster and easier for students. More detail on how to update your information is available on the Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) website.

OEI is responsible for promoting and coordinating the University’s core values of inclusive excellence and equity. OEI has primary responsibility for managing UMBC’s efforts related to Title IX, gender identity, and LGBTQ+ identity, as well as other civil rights issues. OEI is leading our campus community through this important culture change with the support and partnership of countless allies across UMBC. If you are experiencing discrimination based on your gender identity or sexual orientation, you can report it using OEI’s online reporting form.

The diversity of UMBC’s community and our commitment to inclusive excellence are among our greatest strengths. We are committed to continuing to improve and simplify pathways for alerting the University of chosen names and pronouns. While we recognize that achieving inclusion is an ongoing process, we will continue to strive to make our campus a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, including transgender people and other members of the LGBTQ+ community.

We are also committed to providing information and other supportive resources for members of the UMBC community with particular concerns about civil rights related to gender identity. Resources are available at the following sites:
