Send Help

  <Tagline>Is this real life?</Tagline>

Heidy George is the Program Associate for Student Diversity and Inclusion. When she manages to find spare time, she likes to take dance classes and HGTV her living room.

---

I am very much aware of my privilege. I also know that I have many things to be grateful for. And yet, I’m not going to lie…I am struggling. No, like, really struggling.

Before starting my position at UMBC, I was recuperating from an eleven-month stint as a stay-at-home mom. The experience was simultaneously euphoric and debilitating. For eleven months, I watched in awe: as my baby grew, hit all her milestones and explored the world around her. I held her when she cried, changed what seemed like an impossible amount of diapers and learned how to function without sleep. I am not exaggerating. I no longer know what sleep is. I hear people talk about it and wonder, what is this mystical thing people keep mentioning? It’s as elusive as TikTok.

But I digress.

I read a lot of books before becoming a mom. However, the parenting books did not prepare me for any of this. They failed to mention the horrors of projectile diarrhea when your infant is sick, how your heart skips a beat when they smile at you, or that you may be parenting a toddler during a pandemic.

I had only been working at UMBC for six months before the physical campus was closed. I was really just starting to get the hang of things when we all were informed that we would be working from home.

After going back to work, I remember sitting at my desk and thinking, “I really miss my baby. I wish I could work from home so that I could spend more time with her.” Wait, am I responsible for all of this? I now know that being a mom means you acquire super-powers. Maybe, I need to be more specific the next time I ask the universe for something. Now I am figuring out how to juggle being a working mom and a professional in a brand new Institution - my living room.

In all honesty, I’m not sure how much more of this my body can take. My back hurts from the lack of exercise (don’t you dare tell me I can exercise at home like I don’t have a seventeen month old!). My eyes hurt from all the Webex, Zoom and Google Hangout meetings. I just may need new glasses because I am pretty sure my eyesight is deteriorating more and more each day. On the upside Aldi’s now delivers in my area and my 17-month-old now knows how to open the bathroom door.

Yay, milestones!

When well-meaning work folk ask, “how are you?” I honestly struggle with the answer. Is it professional to say that most of the time I don’t have a solid answer? Is it professional to admit that I don’t know if I brushed my teeth this morning before our 9am call? Is it professional to say that most days I really just want my mommy? Is this blog even professional? What is professional anymore? Have I shared too much?

Going back to work was not easy but somehow not being able to go back to work is even harder.

On the toughest days, I rely heavily on a select group of family, friends and colleagues that make me laugh and are able to hold all of my emotions. Their support helps motivate me to push through the sadness. I guess you could call them my village. I hope you have a village to help support you through whatever this is. If not, we always have room for more.

Tips for Succeeding in Remote Positions

    <Tagline>Read About it Now!</Tagline>

As a result of the pandemic the world is facing, many internships and jobs have been moved to virtual spaces in an effort to encourage social distancing. Don’t worry,it is possible to have a rewarding, meaningful experience while working remotely. If you find yourself in a newly appointed remote situation, consider the tips below to make the most of your experience. This list may also be helpful as you navigate your summer options at companies that are planning to host remote interns.

Communicate clearly and often. While communication is a key part of any position, in remote situations you do not have the luxury of being in the same space as everyone else. Dropping by to chat with your co-workers or supervisor whenever you feel like it won't be as easy. Make sure you set up clear lines of communication, or even schedule more frequent check-ins.

Master your technology. While most people have some technological capabilities these days, that does not mean we are experts. You will likely find yourself being challenged to use technology in new ways while working remotely. As you are exposed to new online platforms and programs, take the time to make notes, figure things out, and ask questions. It is okay not to know how something works, and you will benefit from seeking guidance either from manuals or help from co-workers/supervisors.

Consider your work environment. When working remotely, try to find a space where you can comfortably work, but away from where you might conduct leisure activities. This can help break up your day and distinguish between your working hours and your personal time. For those with family or roommates around, consider a discussion on how to share the space and time in your homes to allow everyone to work effectively.

Follow a schedule. Another way to keep on track is to set a daily/weekly schedule for yourself. Especially on days where other items can compete for time and attention, you can set yourself up for success by focusing on work during times when you are less likely to be interrupted.

Have you already obtained a virtual internship, co-op, or research position for summer? We recommend that you register for the Career Center’s Intern Success Practicum, a zero-credit, pass/fail, entirely free course that results in a transcript notation for your experience. Practicum students have the advantage of being connected to a Career Center advisor who can help you establish a strong relationship with your site supervisor and advocate for yourself as needed—two crucial ingredients of a great virtual experience. Questions? Please contact us at internships@umbc.edu.

Want to know more about being a Career Peer? Check out this Q&A with one of our current Career Peers, Tyra Hill:

    Name: Tyra Hill

Position Title: Career Center Career Peer

Major(s)/Minor(s): Psychology major, with a Biology concentration

Current Class Level: Junior

Tell us about your role as a Career Peer including your weekly responsibilities.

The job responsibilities tend to vary and it really depends on the day, but some of the tasks that are always consistent as a Career Peer include conducting drop-ins [resume reviews], producing newsletter e-mails to be sent to students in various majors, producing blog posts, and any task or project that may be asked of me by my supervisor or another Career Center staff member. I also presented workshops, and staffed information tables for various events. Around the time of the Career Fair, I helped out as well.

What new skill sets did you develop as a result of being a Career Peer?

Being a Career Peer helped me become a lot better at speaking publicly. Something that we often do is present workshops and staff information tables, which gave me a lot more practice speaking in front of others. I learned how to properly critique resumes and cover letters, which is one of the main tasks that my job requires. I also developed the ability to work a lot more quickly. Working in the Career Center also gave me a lot of insight about developing myself professionally, the job search process, and how to interact with others in professional settings.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. How and when did you learn of the position? How did you submit your application? What was the interview like?

I learned about this position on UMBCworks around the end of the Spring 2019. I submitted my application through UMBCworks, as well as my class schedule, resume, and cover letter. I was contacted by my now supervisor to come in for an interview. The interview was about an hour long, and the interview questions were definitely extremely relevant to a lot of the situations that I encountered once I became a Career Peer.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position as a Career Peer?

I enjoyed being able to help my peers the most. I am the type of person who really likes helping others and it comes very naturally to me, so this job was extremely fulfilling for me personally because it really allows you to make a difference in the lives of many students. College can be such a confusing time and it’s often filled with uncertainty, so being able to alleviate any of the anxiety that comes along with the college process, college experience, or job search for any of my peers is very enjoyable to me. Nobody knows better than a current college student how hard things can be for other students, so it’s definitely nice to be able to help those who are in the same stage of receiving an education as I am.

I also enjoyed the amount that I learned as a Career Peer. I often hear students who also work talk about how much time work takes up in their day, and how they feel drained from their jobs. I never felt that way as a Career Peer. While it can be challenging, you truly learn so much that ultimately helps you grow as an individual, student, and as a young professional.

How do you believe you have made an impact on UMBC students through your work?

I believe that I have helped UMBC students better explore their options, expand their body of knowledge surrounding college and the job search; provided them tools to aid in their professional development, and given them more confidence about the work that they have done and the experiences that they’ve gained. The really cool thing about being a Career Peer is that you can give other students honest advice based on the experiences that you have had, and this means a lot to students when it is coming from one of their peers. To have a student reach out and let me know that they got a job with a resume that I helped them with, or were able to take advantage of an opportunity that I told them about is amazing to hear, and speaks to the amount of impact that being a Career Peer can have.

What advice would you give to another student who is applying to the Career Peer position?

To another student applying for the Career Peer position, I would say to work on your resume (our Career Guide has great examples if you haven’t seen it already), and don’t be afraid to ask questions and think outside of the box. Also, for those who are called in for interviews, always remember to be professional, compassionate, and let your personality show! If you are someone who truly enjoys helping others, and is looking for an extremely fulfilling on-campus job, this position is definitely for you.

We would also like to congratulate our current graphic design intern, Nancy Luu, on her upcoming graduation this May. I was able to meet with Dustin and learned about the available graphic design internship at the Career Center. I reached out to him afterward and applied for the position through UMBCworks. A few weeks after, I was contacted for an interview with Dustin. During the interview, we reviewed my portfolio, which allowed me to showcase the projects I had worked on. We talked about the position’s expectations and what would be my responsibilities as an intern. Within a few weeks, I got an email for the job offer, and I was super excited to accept my first design job!

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or the Career Center?

Since this position was my first design job, I enjoyed learning everything about design and the work environment.
Abstract:

As a URA scholar, I was granted an opportunity to combine my majors in Psychology and Theatre to explore Art therapy. Art therapy is defined as “an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship” The purpose of my original study was to gather qualitative data from public secondary schools and creative arts programs within Baltimore City, on the use of the creative process as a means to teach and explore social emotional learning. Due to COVID-19, this portion of my project has been postponed. I took this opportunity to focus on my “why”, and learn more about the creative process and its benefits. I created this video to illustrate the journey from an idea or vision to a final product. Everyone has a different relationship with this journey. Engaging in the creative process is one way to monitor this relationship. There are many nuances and challenges along the way, sometimes we are able to push past them with our own tools and other times, we might benefit from some guidance. Enjoy “The Process”.

This work was funded, in part, through an Undergraduate Research Award from the UMBC Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs.

‘Cyber’ touches many, if not all, parts of society and organizations. However, even in 2020, cybersecurity often still is seen as exclusively a function of IT and not a function of enterprise mission assurance or operational resiliency. Accordingly, operational performance can be compromised by a failure to consider, if not embrace, cybersecurity principles and concerns during crisis planning – which can significantly impede effective crisis response and incident management during actual events and make a bad situation even worse. This talk will discuss the role of cybersecurity and cybersecurity thinking within crisis management and incident handling, with a particular emphasis on maintaining operational resiliency and mission assurance during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Richard Forno is a Senior Lecturer in the UMBC Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, where he directs the UMBC Graduate Cybersecurity Program and serves as the Assistant Director of UMBC’s Center for Cybersecurity. Prior to joining UMBC in 2010, his twenty-year career in operational cybersecurity spanned the government, military, and private sector, including helping build a formal cybersecurity program for the US House of Representatives, serving as the first Chief Security Officer for Network Solutions (then, the global center of the internet DNS system), consulting to Fortune 100 companies, and more. From 2005-12 he was a Visiting Scientist at the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, where he taught courses on incident handling for the CERT Coordination Center (CERT/CC).

Virtual Sexual Assault Awareness Month: Centering the Margin: Individual and Systemic Barriers (Week 4) Round-Up

In the absence of physical space to learn, create, and come together, the Women’s Center is taking Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) 2020 online. Each week during April, we will focus on a specific topic/theme as it relates to sexual violence awareness and prevention (see image below). Together, via out social media platforms like Facebook,Twitter, and Instagram, we can watch videos, read articles, and engage in other content for learning and skill-building.

UMBC’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month online calendar includes weekly themes to help explore important concepts related to sexual violence awareness and prevention.

But, we get it… Maybe you’re not on Facebook. Maybe you needed to take a break from social media for the day because you’re practicing self-care. Or maybe, you’re still following us on all the things and still missed a pretty cool post. That’s okay! In addition to posting on social media throughout the month, at the end of each week, we’ll provide a round-up of all the content we shared along with some action items to consider doing.

We just wrapped up Week 4 of SAAM with lots of posts and content centered around the theme of “Centering the Margin: Individual and Systemic Barriers.” This meant the posts we shared took a deeper dive into how sexual assault prevention and response often pushes underrepresented and marginalized survivors to the margins. Through resource sharing and consciousness-raising, we hope that as individuals and communities we center these survivors and ensure prevention and response work that takes their specific needs into consideration.

So what did we explore?

What is cultural betrayal trauma theory? This theory by Dr. Jennifer Gomez is the result of her research focused on the effects of interpersonal trauma (e.g., physical, sexual, and emotional abuse) in diverse populations. Cultural betrayal trauma theory is the idea that some minorities develop what Gomez calls “(intra)cultural trust” – love, loyalty, attachment, connection, responsibility and solidarity with each other to protect themselves from a hostile society. Within-group violence, such as a black perpetrator harming a black victim, is a violation of this (intra)cultural trust. This violation is called a cultural betrayal and it can lead to diverse outcomes, including PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and internalized prejudice. You can learn more here.

Deepening Our Demands For Safety and Healing For Black Survivors of Sexual Violence: “For every Black woman who reports her rape, at least fifteen do not. Many cite a fear that they will not be believed by authorities, or, worse yet, subjected to further violence and criminalization” (Ritchie, Andrea 2017).
The members of the UMBC Bowling Club announced today that they will collectively win the URCAD Selfie Contest.

"Of course, we can't bowl right now," said Miriam, via Zoom. "But we can still send selfies by electronic mail."

"We've always been good at selfies," added Ruth, via Zoom. "I can still put on my bowling shirt, pick up my polished bowling ball and take a mean selfie."

The Club is not presenting any bowling research at URCAD but have perusing the many fascinating student presentations.

"They are doing fantastic work," noted May, via Skype. "Like the kind of work our club does out on those lanes. I'd highly recommend checking out their presentations today just like I'd recommend not trying to beat our crew at bowling. I mean, we have won trophies."
