URCAD Sneak Peek: On Thin Ice

<Tagline>Spherical film exploring climate change in the Arctic</Tagline>

On Thin Ice is focused on raising awareness of climate change in the arctic, and was one of three Interdisciplinary CoLab research experiences offered to students at UMBC over the summer. Throughout the four-week internship, each student brought their own variety of expertise to the table to create maps of temperature changes in the arctic, compile informational videos about melting ice caps, and write a compelling script for their 12-minute video illustrating the devastating effects of a warming northern hemisphere. The students also had to properly format the video onto a spherical structure which required learning new coding and video editing techniques. It will be presented at Virtual URCAD 2020!

Abstract:

On Thin Ice is a spherical film that explores the impacts of climate change in the Arctic, a vital region for the Earth’s future. An interdisciplinary team of students used a combination of maps, visualizations from NOAA, videos, and images, to produce an immersive presentation that depicts changes in our world in places not accessible to the public. The team researched the problem, created GIS maps, wrote a narrative, and brought all of these elements together into a documentary made for spherical projection systems. The story follows marine animals of the Arctic, from phytoplankton to polar bears. This exploration provides insight on how a changing climate affects Arctic wildlife and their habitats. On Thin Ice also introduces humans as a part of the Arctic ecosystem and as essential players in determining the fate of the Arctic. This short documentary showcases the use of spherical video for science communication, and it incorporates elements of all of the Polar Literacy Initiative’s Polar Literacy Principles. This makes this video a tool for teachers to use in their classrooms during lessons about the Arctic region, and science museums can showcase the film across the US.

Getting Involved - New Work Session Days

  <Tagline>Online Work Sessions & Task Sheets</Tagline>

Hey EWB,

In response to some feedback, we have decided on a more organized method for accomplishing tasks for the remainder of this semester. We will be holding 2 work sessions each week via Google Hangouts. Members can come to one, or both, or work independently and check in through email or GroupMe.

We now have a task sheet breaking up some of our bigger tasks into bite size chunks. Find the task sheet at this link. If you see a task that interests you or that you want to work on, you can jump right in. If you are working on a task, please record any work in this work session folder and try to title the document so that we know what task you are working on. If you are working on a task directly in a document (Alternatives Analysis or Implementation Plan) try to keep in touch with us and/or put your name next to the task in the task sheet to designate that you worked on it.

The goal of the online work sessions is to provide a designated time for everyone to work on EWB related tasks and be able to answer questions and get updates from everyone. You can absolutely work independently outside of these times! The current times we have scheduled are:

Friday April 17th 7-9pm (Only this Friday will be held in the evening)

Mondays 11am-1pm

Fridays 11am-1pm

To join the Google Hangouts group, click this link. Video chats will be held through this group.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! Our goal is to give you plenty of opportunities to get involved and feel included in our chapter's work.

We hope to see you this Friday at 7pm :)

25 globally minded, rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors to
international companies here in Baltimore. The program aims to expose
these students to a wide array of companies, careers, and
opportunities in international business. The goal is to keep global talent
local and to help these students build their professional networks. Due to current

We expect the virtual program to offer all of the

application deadline is April 30th so please apply sooner than
later! There is a $250 program fee, but WTCI is aware of the financial
implications of COVID-19 on many students and have scholarships available to
subsidize the program cost for students in need.

URCAD Sneak Peek: Bella Possidente

  <Tagline>Lighthouse: An animated film</Tagline>

Abstract:

Lighthouse is a two-minute digitally animated short film about a tiny lighthouse keeper doing his job. When a lighthouse is damaged by a violent storm, its keeper must go on a journey to fix it and restore light to the surrounding area. The film was inspired by an odd concept that stuck in my mind—a lighthouse standing alone in a field, surrounded by wind-blown grasses that mimic the movement of ocean waves. By telling one character’s story, the film showcases a very small part of that world. The sound design adds reality to the film and is paired with whimsical visuals to create a strong environmental mood. Having the freedom to record foley and compose an original soundtrack made it possible to match the emotional tone of the story and use the audio as an additional means to communicate information. The visuals make use of simple shapes and limited colors to clearly and efficiently communicate action, setting, and tone. Completing an ambitious project in a short time influenced many design decisions in the interest of making the final product achievable. Ultimately, the time constraint was instrumental in bringing out the level of quality present in the finished work.
