URCAD Sneak Peek: Meredith Power

Abstract:

From 1941 to 1943, the BBC employed a mild-mannered but fiercely opinionated writer named Eric Blair to produce propaganda for broadcasts to India. How did Blair - better known to the public as leftist firebrand George Orwell - reconcile his personal political view with the messages his position required him to send? Scholars and historians often discuss Orwell's career in relation to his two greatest novels, Animal Farm and 1984. The straightforward prose and the earnest intellectual tone for which his novels became known also served a valuable role in his contribution to Britain's war effort in India and southeast Asia. Drawing on Orwell's early fiction, letters, and essays, as well as selected transcripts of the BBC broadcasts he created, this paper reveals the significant ways in which Orwell's pre-war experiences shaped his wartime writing. Approaching Orwell's wartime BBC broadcasts to India as the work of a conflicted but deeply committed British patriot, rather than framing them as the warnings of a disillusioned oracle, gives both scholars and the public a more complete picture of this fascinating and still mysterious literary giant.

Virtual Interviewing

<Tagline>A short guide on how to rock the virtual interview!</Tagline>

With all the craziness going on with COVID-19, job searching is a challenge. For now, everything has been moved online, and it’s harder to make a real human connection with other people who may want to hire you when there’s a screen between the two of you. Today, I wanted to talk about the virtual interview and how to perform the best you can. For further tips, check out the Career Center website.

Practice your interviewing skills using Big Interview, our mock interviewing platform. You can get advice on how to answer tricky questions and how interviews are conducted, and you can record yourself answering sample questions and have others rate your answers! If you would like the Career Center to review your interview answers, send a note to interviews@umbc.edu and a Career Peer will watch your video and rate it.

Test your equipment! Make sure your camera and microphone are working before the interview, that way if you need to make a new purchase, you have time to do so.

Dress professionally! Wear appropriate business attire for your virtual interview. Not only can your interviewers see your professionalism based on what you are wearing, but it’ll give you a little confidence boost too.

Pick a neutral background! Make sure the background in view of your camera is neutral and not distracting.

Do your research! As with all interviews, be prepared for the questions they might ask, as well as have the knowledge about the company that you need. It is okay to have notes for your interview, just don’t make a script. Organize your notes according to your skill sets with corresponding anecdotes that exemplify those skills.

Sit up straight and smile! You can’t shake the interviewer’s hand, so you need to show enthusiasm and attentiveness through your body language. Sit up straight, but be sure to appear relaxed enough that you don’t seem nervous or tense. Smile at your interviewers when greeting them and at appropriate times throughout the interview.

Finally, look in the direction of the camera, rather than to the side, above it, or below at the interviewers face. That is the best way to simulate eye contact when you can’t be in the room with someone yourself.

These are unprecedented and challenging times we live in, but that doesn’t mean that life should be put on hold. You can still job search and interview during COVID-19, it’ll just all be online! The Career Center is here to help you with every step of the process.

Virtual Sexual Assault Awareness Month: Deconstructing Rape Myths and Narratives (Week 2) Round-Up

In the absence of physical space to learn, create, and come together, the Women’s Center is taking Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) 2020 online. Each week during April, we will focus on a specific topic/theme as it relates to sexual violence awareness and prevention (see image below). Together, via out social media platforms like Facebook,Twitter, and Instagram, we can watch videos, read articles, and engage in other content for learning and skill-building.

UMBC’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month online calendar includes weekly themes to help explore important concepts related to sexual violence awareness and prevention.

Have you been taking a break from social media? Missed a few posts? That’s okay! In addition to posting on social media throughout the month, at the end of each week, we’ll provide a round-up of all the content we shared along with some action items to consider doing.

We just wrapped up week two of SAAM and spent the last several days exploring rape narratives and myths through the following content:

1.What is rape culture? Rape culture is a sociological concept for a setting in which sexual violence is pervasive, normalized, or encouraged due to societal attitudes about gender and sexuality. As exemplified in this image, tolerance of things at the bottom leads to excusing the behaviors at the top.

This pyramid describes rape culture, with words on the bottom including catcalling, rape jokes, and stalking. The top includes rape, molestation, and and drugging.

2. The prevalence of rape myths reinforces a very narrow definition of what sexual violence/rape is and how and when it happens. By deconstructing rape myths, we enable survivors to better access support and healing by ending a culture that blames victims. Learn more at Everyday Feminism

Want even more to read about this topic? Check out this list of books!

3. The phrase “Boys will be boys” is an “explain-away” that can work to reinforce rape culture (think back to that pyramid!).

Here is a helpful article from the Good Men Project that further explains the importance of unlearning to use this phrase, but first, take a listen to one of Dua Lipa’s newest songs, “Boys Will Be Boys” which adresses sexual harassment some women (and also some LGBTQ folks) experience. What do you think?

4. What about implicit biases? So much of media is focused on “the perfect victim,” but this stereotype perpetuates dangerous myths that limit our understanding of the broad ways in which rape impacts people. Check out this video to learn more.

What about LGBTQ survivors? We live in a world where “heterosexuality” is default, and also where we are told that victims are women and rapists are men; however, in creating and perpetuating this rape myth, we are silencing a vast majority of survivor stories whose experiences reflect their LGBTQ identities. Read more in this vice article.

    The Women’s Center’s pronoun pins!

Important Take-Away:

→ Remember the pyramid! Tolerance of sexist attitudes, rape jokes, and catcalling all contribute to perpetuating rape culture.

→ Examine your implicit biases. There’s no such thing as a “perfect victim”, and far too many LGBTQ survivors are silenced by steryotypes and rape myths.

→ Cut out language that promotes rape culture. Never say “Boys will be boys”!

Boys will be held accountable for their actions!

Now that you’ve got some good readings in your tool kit, what will you do with them? Here’s some Action Items:

Reflect on any implicit biases you might not realize you have. Read some of the articles we posted, reflect on your own beliefs, and start a conversation.

Share one of the articles above on your social media platforms. Ask your friends or family members if they’d be willing to engage in a conversation with you about one of the takeaways that stood out to you.

Learn more about how to cultivate a culture of consent. Here’s one more video on consent you can watch and share! Are you on twitter? Read more tweets written by Spring Up here, and feel free to use their proposed tweets – they gave their consent!

URCAD Sneak Peek: Sarah Driver

<Tagline>The Role of the Parlor Piano in 19th C. America</Tagline>

Abstract:

In nineteenth-century America, the parlor piano carried immense symbolism. The piano represented wealth, taste, position, and duty. My research explores how a large, cumbersome instrument aligned itself with the most influential, but intangible aspects of everyday life for the nineteenth-century middle class American. Inside the home, the piano had a significant impact on interior design, family dynamics, and gender roles. It showed visitors that their hosts were a strong family with a hardworking husband and father, a stylish, caring wife and mother, and disciplined, cultured children. Meanwhile, outside the home, these compact pianos played a major role in American manufacturing, commercialism, and consumerism while also bringing about the birth of the modern music industry. By understanding the role of the parlor piano in nineteenth-century America, one cannot only learn a great deal about American culture and society of the period, but also appreciate how much of an impact everyday objects have on modern life and the stories they will be able to tell in the future.
