URCAD Sneak Peek: Emily Godfrey

  <Tagline>"terminal": Contemporary Choreographic Perspectives</Tagline>

Abstract:

“terminal” is a dance that explores the individual choice forced upon family members when a family dynamic is drastically changed forever. The work was researched and created for the Senior Dance Concert (November 2019), performed at the Fall Dance Showcase (December 2019), and will perform again at the “American College Dance Association” in March 2020. The inspiration of the work derived from observing the different ways a family reacts to the slow passing of a loved one that once connected the community. While the movement and placement of the dancers should somewhat show the original and intended message the choreographer envisioned, the audience is given the choice to create their own meaning to the dance, derived from what they experienced. Emphasizing the dimensionality from a range of minimalistic gestures to athletic locomotion, four dancers show a wide range of movement vocabulary to express confrontation, intimacy, and the feeling of imbalance. The piece is intentionally left open-ended, leaving the audience to reflect, react, and invoke discussion. So long as the work resonates with the viewer, the experience is what matters, not the presentation of a theme.

REPOST: Counseling Center Statement on COVID-19 & Xenophobia

Reposting to amplify and stand in solidarity with our Counseling Center colleagues.

--

In these uncertain times, it is important as a community and a nation that we don’t lose sight of our identities, our purpose, and our impact. As such, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s (UMBC) Counseling Center is taking a firm stance against the recent increase in xenophobia and racism that has been perpetrated against Chinese and Asian communities.

While the coronavirus (COVID-19) was declared by the World Health Organization as a global pandemic on March 11, 2020, some have chosen to refer to it as the “Chinese Virus,” the “Wuhan Virus,” or a “foreign virus.” This language falsely suggests that Chinese or Asian people are the sole carriers of the disease, while also dangerously ignoring the fact that any person, of any race or ethnicity, may be a carrier. Further, this misinformation racializes a public health emergency and perpetuates discrimination against ethnic Chinese (or other Asian) people, reflecting a long-standing history of xenophobia – a form of prejudice against people from other countries. Acts of discrimination, harassment, violence, and verbal aggression towards Chinese and Asian people in the U.S. have increased as a result and have imbued hate and fearmongering into an atmosphere already rife with uncertainty and anxiety.

UMBC draws its strength from its diversity of thought, cultures, backgrounds, and the importance with which inclusivity is upheld and championed. Asian and Asian American (especially Chinese and Chinese American) students, staff, and faculty are valued members of the UMBC community. UMBC’s Counseling Center decries racist or xenophobic rhetoric, behavior, or ideology. Furthermore, as mental health providers, we understand the negative psychological, physiological, and sociological effects of scapegoating, victim blaming, and bias in a time where we all need to find ways to be supported, connected, and truly informed.

Research shows that experiences of discrimination can lead to confusion, self-doubt, anxiety, sadness, loneliness, and depression, along with a host of physical ailments. While it is understandable that these times of uncertainty have led to anxiety and fear, engaging in blame and othering behaviors only increases paranoia, mistrust, and emotional distancing, which in turn fuel anxiety and fear. Simply put, increasing belonging and connection helps us all, spreading division and distrust hurts us all. For a community built on inclusive excellence, we know the choice to make, so we hope you join us in denouncing discrimination and addressing xenophobia and racism in all its forms.

Abstract:

The new Digital Art Movement has been about showing viewers the artistic capabilities of machines, and using the internet to raise awareness about issues such as climate change and endangered animals. As the founder of The Digital Art Movement at UMBC, it has been my ambition for almost three years now to create digital art pieces that reflect who we are now, and the issues our generation faces. Using metaphorical imagery, and patterns (chosen because these are visual attributes we are built to scan and read into,) I have created a series about endangered animals that is built to be interpreted, and affordable. With 15% of profit going to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), my hope is that digital art can play a role in the cause to better our environment and protect its animals. In this presentation I will share my experience with the digital art medium and its role in the future of art. With the world delving deeper into the digital realm every day, it is my belief that digital art will soon be of major interest to the art world. Art is the practice of exploration and expression, and the digital world is the new frontier.

URCAD Sneak Peek: Julia Palmer

Abstract:

My Global Studies 409 class focused on technology’s impact on society. Through reflecting, I discovered my struggle to remain true to my identity, in this age of rampant technology. For my final project I desired to have it change me. I challenged myself to document days without my phone, to De-Cyborg. Initially, I spent more time by myself than usual. Making plans with friends couldn't be instant anymore. The isolation created loneliness, however, I soon found joy in thinking and processing without distraction. I wrote poetry and surrounded myself with nature; my mind was clear for the first time in awhile. This four minute video invites the audience to explore my internal conversation with my phone, as I refer to it as “you”. In a broader scope I hope the audience will begin to challenge their own thoughts, and question the impact their phone has on them. In the end, I give the final question of “Do I need you?” During college, I have chosen convenience over mental health, in choosing to keep my phone. My aspiration for the future is being able to balance life without it, and focusing on what matters.

Ransomware is crippling industry and government alike. Paying the ransom doesn’t guarantee you’ll get your files back, but it funds the criminals who will continue on. Restoring from traditional network backups takes time, and never gets you back to the system you had before the attack. In response, we have developed a resilient, local malware restore and recovery capability, capable of quickly restoring OS images onto “bare metal” after an attack or misconfiguration, useful for many applications.

I will discuss the technical details, including a description of the Opal hard drive specification, the Trusted Computing Group’s Trusted Platform Module (TPM), and how we secure secrets needed for WUBU – Wake-Up-Back-Up. I’ll talk through some of the open-source technologies that we used to build our solution. WebEx willing, I will give a live demonstration of a ShinoLocker ransomware infection, followed by an “as if nothing ever happened” recovery that takes only ten minutes.

Russ Fink is a senior staff member at the Johns Hopkins University / Applied Physics Laboratory. His research interests include computational private information retrieval, trusted computing applications, applied cryptography, and enterprise and mission cyber resiliency techniques. He earned a Ph.D. in computer science from UMBC in 2010 working with Dr. Alan Sherman. email: *protected email*

Host: Alan T. Sherman, *protected email*. Support for this event was provided in part by the National Science Foundation under SFS grant DGE-1753681. The UMBC Cyber Defense Lab meets biweekly Fridays. All meetings are open to the public. Upcoming CDL Meetings:

Managed Services Engineer I: UMBCworks 9315558

Security Operations Analyst – Managed Services: UMBCworks 9315559

Allie LaBelle, a member of the NuHarbor human resources recruiting team, shares her thoughts about the organization:

If you had to describe NuHarbor Security in three words,
    what would they be?

Security, Passion, and Education

What is the number one thing you look for in a new team
    member?

We are
looking for passionate people that are excited to work for a cyber security
company. We look for a new team
member to fit our companies’ culture! We look for a new team member who will always
put their team first, strive to do better for our customers, and continue to
    learn and grow.

What qualities do your coworkers possess that make them
    enjoyable to work with?

We think that getting to spend time with the awesome people
we work with is one of the best perks of the job. NuHarbor Security employees
are very easy to talk to! We use slack for interoffice communication and always
have several conversations going on from division specific conversations to a
watercooler where we encourage random conversation from weekend plans to
favorite beers. In our Vermont office we
frequently host lunch events from potlucks to pizza and beverages of choice
days. What makes our coworkers so
great to work alongside is their passion for what they do, their
openness to welcoming new members, and their drive for the company as a whole,
to be the best that they can be for the good of each other and the company!

What makes
you enjoy going to work and how does the culture promote that? What about the office encourages that
    supportive environment and culture?

What makes me
enjoy working for NuHarbor is not only that we are located in the beautiful
state of Vermont and get to see the mountains everyday on our way to work. It’s
the fact that when you are hired and are going through onboarding you are never
a stranger for long. For new students who have just graduated the first day let
alone first week may seem scary. Have no fear, by the end of the first week
everyone has stopped by to say welcome and introduce themselves to you. The
communication is amazing at NuHarbor, there isn’t the need to feel like you are
bothering someone when you send a Slack message over to them! Something that makes NuHarbor stand out is how we follow
our values. Everyone is on the same page when it comes to our them, protect the
house, help our clients win, and always be learning are the three values that
    all our employees model

Why did you originally choose to work for NuHarbor
    Security?

I choose to work for NuHarbor because of the great things Iheard about the company. I came from a huge companyand I was yearning for a smallercompany
with a “family” feel! We were voted #4 for “Best Places to Work” in Vermont for
2018, we are waiting on the 2019 results but we already know we are somewhere within
    the first 50!

Do you have any examples or remember a specific time that
you loved working with your team?

Currently our
company had to transition from working at the office to 100% working remote. At
a time where the unknown was frightening our company really kept us together. Justin
our CEO has put on a couple events to keep us updated and at ease. He put on a virtual
“town hall” where he updated everyone about what was happening at NuHarbor! Our
departments managers all gave an update on their departments! I really enjoyed
and found it important to get together as a company. On Fridays we have been
doing a “virtual happy hour” as a company! The last two weeks we have had
themes for the zoom meetings, everyone joins with fun virtual backgrounds! This
upcoming Friday is our first Bingo game!!! Even though we are all separated and
not in the office environment we are kept in the loop of what’s happening and
able to still enjoy each other’s company!

If you remember anything specific, can you talk about
your interviewing/hiring process when you started at (NAME OF COMPANY)?

The hiring process at NuHarbor was very personable! They
clearly love what they do! Kathie Cheney the HR director started the interview
process with a pre-screen phone call “trying to get to know me” were we just
chatted about what I currently did and what interested me in this opportunity. We
then had a “face to face” with another person from the HR team. They asked me
about what they were looking for and asked me some questions regarding the
position, I was able to ask question about the company too! The next step I was
brought back in for another face-to-face where I had a full panel interview
with a couple people from the different departments! They asked me more
technical questions and opened it up for me to ask the managers questions. They
even gave me the grand tour of the offices! From
there I heard back within the next 12 hours about the verdict!

What internal mobility is available, and how soon can
employees take advantage of growth opportunities?

Our company is growing! We are taking on more clients and
expanding our boundaries across the East Coast! There are a lot of
opportunities for internal mobility within our company! If you are successful
and are doing a great job you will not go unnoticed. We keep a lot of our
employee’s strengths and aspirations into our recruiting mind frame.

Why do you hire UMBC students?

We see that
there is a lot of correlation between what UMBC students focus on and what we
do daily at NuHarbor Security and are excited about the opportunities to hire
    within the University! We have
researched the Cybersecurity Track and Cybersecurity Analytics certificates and
feel these individuals would be able to hit the ground running at NuHarbor
    Security!
