URCAD Sneak Peek: Keren Herran Social Determinants of Health and Pregnancy in Rural Ecuador
Keren is an Individualized Study major, a member of the Honors College, Meyerhoff Scholar, and LSAMP participant. She will be presenting her research: "Children Raising Children: A Qualitative Study of the Social Determinants of Adolescent Pregnancy in Rural Ecuador" at Virtual URCAD 2020!

Abstract:

According to Ecuador's most recent census, 1/5 of pregnancies are from adolescent mothers -- elevating rates of poverty, maternal and child mortality, and birth complications. Hence, our research question: how do social determinants of health (SDOH) cause adolescent pregnancy in rural Ecuador?

Our research team analyzed 3 focus groups composed of 5-7 adolescent (14-21 years old) mothers who had recently (within two years) given birth in El Quinche, Lumbisi, and Pifo. In depth interviews with 10 key informants (health officials, providers, and policy-makers) were also organized to explore perceptions regarding interventions and causes of adolescent pregnancy. Our team interviewed until reaching saturation of information, validating collected data through triangulation. We applied grounded theory for analysis via open, axial, and selective coding using NVivo software. 

Our data revealed that the root SDOH causing adolescent pregnancy includes compromised sexual education, shame in discussing the topic, and troubled households. Therefore, we recommend that Ecuador focus on improving the quality of sexual education in schools, creating a positive sexual environment, and encouraging female empowerment. Ultimately, gaining a better understanding of the causes of adolescent pregnancy can inform the formulation of more effective interventions in Ecuador and beyond.

They will be exhibiting their work: "Emotional," at Virtual URCAD 2020!

Abstract:
"Emotional" is an animated self portrait depicting the struggle one faces when dealing with bipolar one disorder. The boy, a representation of the animator, has a series of rapid mood swings that plunge him into an uncontrollable surge of emotion. He must figure out a way to regain control of his feelings and get help. The piece was created through several different animation techniques. The greyscale paper dolls that functioned as the body for the protagonist were made by hand and given life through stop motion animation and use of a greenscreen. Layered on top of this, was digital animation for the rushing emotions, as well as digital rotoscoping for the boy’s expressions. The stop motion animation was done under a DSLR camera and then processed through Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro. The sound design for this piece was created in Ableton Live and Adobe Audition, and recrafted with permissions from FreeSound.org, and UMBC’s Sound Vault. This animation is intended to give viewers a glimpse into the tidal waves of emotions that so deeply affect not only the animator but anyone who struggles with bipolar one disorder.

UMBC Cyber Dawgs place first in
15th Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition

 

Congratulations to the UMBC Cyber Dawgs for winning the 15th Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (MACCDC) which was held this Friday and Saturday. UMBC placed first in a field of teams from eight Universities who made the regional finals out of an initial set of 27 qualifying teams. By winning the regional competition, UMBC will represent the Mid-Atlantic states in the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition to be held on May 22-24, 2020.

The MACCDC has been held annually since 2006. Each year, it develops a new realistic challenge using the latest technologies currently in use. This year’s scenario involves student teams working for a fictitious Artificially Intelligent Institute (AII), a multinational corporation with offices in the Mid-Atlantic region. It was described as follows.

“As a leading provider of advanced AI surveillance tools to intelligence and law enforcement agencies, as well as private-sector organizations, the main business driver of AII is to show how new surveillance capabilities are transforming government’s and organization’s monitoring capabilities. As part of their duties, Blue Teams are expected to defend their systems against aggressors. Early intelligence reports suggest that rouge Hackistanian antagonist are interested in stealing AII’s intellectual property, source code, and customer database. Hackers contracted and working directly for the country of Hackistan are also interested in disrupting IoT devices on-premises at the various AII regional offices.”

The MACCDC team was chosen from members of the CyberDawgs student group, composed of students from a variety of majors who share a common interest in computer and network security. No prior experience is required to join and any UMBC students who want to learn more about cybersecurity and learn new skills in the field are encouraged to subscribe to its mailing list and attend meetings.

The CyberDawgs group is advised by CSEE faculty Charles Nicholas and Richard Forno.

Since we have moved to online for the semester, elections will be working differently this year. Instead of presenting your slide to the whole group at a GBM, you will be making a slide to share virtually. You are asked to create a slide introducing who you are, as well as fill out a google form that explains why you want the position you are running for. Think of the google form as your speech and your slide as the visual for that speech. Any member that has attained three membership points THIS YEAR may run for any position. Artist's Statement:
My goal in creating a piece of art is to convey the truth that lies in beauty. My focus in my work is creating solid forms and expressing rhythm in the face and the body. My style is a mix of realism and impressionism. I work primarily with charcoal and oil paint, but I am also adept at working in digital media and 3-D design. My medium and approach are often seen as traditional, but I desire to show the sacredness of nature and humanity. I am always in a state of learning. My approach is to constantly re-invent and conceptualize the way I see things. My work, as a result, has a life of its own and a sense of balance.

Even when we are unable to host Take Back the Night or the Clothesline Project, it is important for the Women's Center to provide a platform for survivor voices, stories, and their power.


Survivors to the Front is a zine that commemorates Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and provides our UMBC community members--especially survivors and victims of sexual and/or power-based violence--a way to grab the megaphone. Albeit, voices will be heard through a zine in a much different way, we are committed to building the platform by which survivor testimony can be amplified throughout our campus community.


We are accepting submissions from all different mediums, including, but not limited to poetry, prose, art, and photography! You don't need to be an artist or a writer to submit: you just need to have a story. Think about this zine as a way to step up to the Survivor Speak-Out microphone and say your peace.

See specific guidelines in the Submission Form here. Each contributor will be able to submit up to 3 pieces of work. The deadline to submit will be Wednesday, April 15. 


The finished product (set to debut around April 24th) will be posted on social media and available for digital download. Print copies will be made available when campus reopens. 


Thank you for your participation in this project. Although we will still miss all of the greatness and power that Take Back the Night and other SAAM programs bring to our campus, we know that stories still need to be shared and voices heard. Just so, we hope that you can submit your work to be celebrated, acknowledged, and felt by the UMBC community.

After earning her BS at UMBC, Jennifer earned a M.S. Degree in Statistics at University of Delaware. She employed by W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc. since 1997.Career Highlights:
  • Process engineer for the manufacturing process to produce PTFE fibers including the fiber for Glide(R) Dental Floss. 
  • Engineering leader for manufacturing engineers in US, Germany, China, and Japan 
  • End to End Global Supply Chain Manager "

Nicholas Rogers

BS Chemical Engineering, Engineering and Sustainability track (2015)

Nick is currently a fourth year Ph.D. candidate at Duke University in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. Under Dr. Mark Wiesner, Nick is studying the relationships between extracellular vesicle (EV) surface chemistry and their associated transport and fate in soil systems. This research is in collaboration with the Duke Extracellular Vesicle Network (DEVNet), an internal interdisciplinary working group devoted to exploring the role of EVs in inter-kingdom communication. His research is being supported by an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. While at UMBC, Nick worked in the labs of both Dr. Mark Marten and Dr. Lee Blaney.

Elise Adamson

BS Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Bioengineering Track (2017)

Irina Ramos

PhD Chemical Engineering (2009)

She works at AstraZeneca as part of the Biopharmaceutical Development team. She has been there for over 10 years. Her experience focuses on development of downstream processes for Biologics from Early to Late stages and a clear understanding of marketing application requirements. Since 2015, she has taught one of the courses for the Graduate Program in Biotechnology. Her PhD advisor was Dr. Theresa Good.

Cindy Chelius

PhD Chemical Engineering (2019)

Cindy is a Scientist at Bristol-Myers Squibb in the upstream process development group located in Devens, Massachusetts. Her PhD advisor was Dr. Marten.

Sevda Deldari

PhD Chemical Engineering (2020)

She started a new position at AstraZeneca as a scientist in BioProcess Technologies and Engineering group. Her PhD advisor were Dr. Douglas Frey and Dr. Govind Rao

Remote or not, Sexual Assault Awareness Month marches forward! Just so, the Women's Center is creating a Virtual Clothesline Project. 

Survivors looking to participate can digitally design a clothesline project t-shirt and submit it to the Women’s Center by direct messaging us via Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or emailing your image to us at womencenter@umbc.edu. You can use Canva, Spark, photography, Powerpoint, anything! There are design examples attached to this myUMBC post below.

We will be gathering submissions throughout the month and eventually culminating in a Clothesline Project story on IG and FB, and features in the SAAM zine project, "Survivors to the Front: A Call to Witness."*

For those interested in participating and submitting a design:
  • In your design, please do not include your name or any other identifying information in your design. If your contribution details your story, and you would like to go no further in the reporting process, we encourage you not to disclose any names or other specific identifying information, such as locations or familial relationships, as those details may prompt staff to follow up with you for reporting matters. This is particularly important for incidents related to childhood sexual abuse.
  • The Clothesline Project intends to make visible the direct impact of sexual violence on survivors and victims. In doing so, we ask that only those who self-identify as survivors/victims of sexual and/or power-based violence (including those impacted by secondary trauma) create and submit designs.

More about the Clothesline Project:
The Clothesline Project is a community-based public art display in which survivors and victims of sexual and power-based violence design and create shirts that illustrate their stories. In the public display, each decorated shirt is hung shoulder to shoulder so that viewers bear witness to the impact of sexual violence in our campus community.
