UMBC Cyber Dawgs are named CyberForce national champions

UMBC’s Cyber Defense Team, known as the Cyber Dawgs, has emerged the national champion team in the U.S. Department of Energy’s fifth annual CyberForce Competition. The Cyber Dawgs earned first place overall out of more than 100 teams from universities across the country.

Ten national laboratories hosted competing teams this year, November 15 – 16. UMBC competed at the Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, Illinois, while other teams traveled to sites like the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Washington state and Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. Competing teams hailed from a broad range of institutions, including Virginia Tech, Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, Texas A&M and the U.S. Air Force Academy.

The competition tasks students with defending critical energy infrastructure during simulated cyberattacks. The scenarios are designed to be realistic, focused on water and power systems and including real-world constraints, such as insufficient budget for system upkeep and limited information on system needs. During the competition, “red teams,” including industry professionals, attack the system, while the students work to ensure that the infrastructure is available to their customers, or “green teams,” who test system usability.

The teams receive points based on how successfully they address attacks, while still allowing users to access the infrastructure they need. The teams are also awarded points for innovative defense tactics and ideas. This year’s competition saw several leading teams with neck-and-neck scores until the final round, when UMBC’s Cyber Dawgs pulled ahead for the victory.

The competition offers students a unique opportunity to develop their cybersecurity skills in relation to critical infrastructure, and have hands-on experience in a realistic cyberattack situation.

“The CyberForce competition is the most unique of our annual events, allowing us to experiment with network configurations to defend an industrial control system against adversaries while playing the roles of an IT organization,” explains RJ Joyce ’18, M.S. ’20, computer science, a member of the winning team. “The hard work, dedication, and creativity that each member brought to the team lifted us from a regional win last year to a national win this year.”

In addition to Joyce, last weekend’s winning team included Anna Staats ’20, computer science; Drew Barrett ’20, computer science; Grant Spencer ’20, computer science; Cyrus Bonyadi, Ph.D. ’23, computer science; and Seamus Burke ’20, computer science.

“The team’s second national championship in three years shows the enthusiasm, grit, and tenacity of our students in demonstrating their technical cyber expertise in a competitive arena,” says Rick Forno, senior lecturer of computer science and assistant director of UMBC’s Center for Cybersecurity.

Forno advises the Cyber Dawgs with Charles Nicholas, professor of computer science and electrical engineering. “It’s an awesome thing not just for the team and university,” he says, “but for each competitor individually, as they prepare to enter the cybersecurity workforce after graduation.”

UMBC students have a strong record in state and national competition. In 2018, UMBC computer science and information systems students won the top prize at the Maryland Cyber Challenge. A year earlier, the UMBC Cyber Dawgs won the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition.

In just one week from today, the Choice Program will be hosting an open house! We are asking for your help in servicing the community of Cherry Hill this Thanksgiving. Choice has been in Cherry Hill for 30+ years and is currently undergoing a process of creating a deeper bond with the residents of the neighborhood. With that in mind, we want to host a small food drive out of the Cherry Hill office on November 26th. We are teaming up with UMBC's UNICEF student org to get the needs met. We are aiming to create Thanksgiving baskets for 25 families, which will be passed out at our open house. Please see the attached list of things you can either donate directly:

Items

boxed macaroni & cheese

sweet potatoes

apples

ears of corn

green beans

rolls/bread

rice bags of dried beans

boxed broth

cake or brownie mix and a can of frosting

vegetable oil

canned milk

instant coffee

canned cranberry sauce

canned goods

Turkeys/Chickens/Ham

Donation Drop Off Locations

Cherry Hill Office

971 Seagull Ave.

Baltimore MD 21225

Catonsville Office

5406 Valley Rd

Catonsville MD 21228

Shriver Center

1000 Hilltop Circle

Baltimore MD 21250

If you have any questions, contact:

Nia Hampton
Enrichment Coordinator
The Choice Program @ UMBC
(443) 890 - 0231
nia3@umbc.edu
choiceprograms.org

You can also donate money via Gritstarter at:

Researcher of the Week: Elisabeth Kan

 <Tagline>Investigating the HIV host cell</Tagline>

Elisabeth Kan is a Biological Sciences B.S. Major, and Emergency Health Services Minor who will graduate in May, 2020. She recently received a UMBC Travel Award to present her research at ABRCMS in Anaheim, California.

Title of your research project: Elucidating the Structure of the HIV-1 5′ Leader Through a Paramagnetically Tagged Reporter Protein

Describe your project: The project I am working on uses metal bound complexes in nuclear magnetic resonance to study how HIV’s viral material is structured. Understanding the underlying structure will in turn provide us with crucial information about the assembly and function of HIV in the host cell.

Who is your mentor(s) for your project? Dr. Michael F. Summers Chemistry & Biochemistry Department. I found this mentor through other undergraduate researchers who spoke very highly of Dr. Summers and the research conducted in his lab. I chose Dr. Summers because I was very interested in retrovirus research from a Genetics course I took my sophomore year.

How did you become interested in this project? I work very closely under the mentorship of post-doc, Dr. Jonathan Catazaro and two other undergraduate students, Faith Davis and Claudia Walker. I became interested in this project through my mentor as he was working on novel ways to use NMR with larger RNA constructs.

What has been the hardest part about your research/What was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher? The hardest part about our research is trying to reproduce our data. There are so many unexpected variables to our project and since we are working with larger RNA constructs, it’s hard to pinpoint what may have gone wrong with our experiments. Although it has been challenging, I really enjoy trying to problem solve and come up with new solutions whenever our data is inconclusive.

What has been the most rewarding part? The most rewarding part about the research we are doing is being able to take part in problem solving and developing solutions to our inconclusive results. I really enjoy being able to try out different experimental conditions and every so often seeing that it works!

How will you disseminate your research? Next week I will be giving an oral presentation at ABRCMS which is the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students. I also plan on presenting at URCAD in the spring.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research? If you’re considering getting involved in research, make sure that you rotate in the PI’s laboratory and get to know the students working in the lab. They make a big difference in your lab experience and it is important to find a place that has a nurturing educational environment.

What are your career goals? I aspire to be a physician who specializes in internal medicine or pediatrics.
