Graduate Record Examination
(GRE) Preparation

This four week 8 session workshop prepares prospective students to take the computer-adaptive Graduate Records Examination. The purpose of the course is to improve students’ performance on the GRE test by:

  • Providing students with successful test management techniques
  • Familiarizing students with question types specific to the GRE
  • Teaching the logical, rhetorical, and mathematical problem-solving techniques relevant to the GRE
  • Teaching essential grammatical and mathematical concepts and techniques in application to real test problems
  • Identifying the specific problems posed by the GRE, and analyzing common test-taking errors
  • Improving performance and reducing test anxiety through practice testing

This workshop is taught by Mary Gallagher who has helped hundreds of students perform better on their GRE examinations. While this workshop provides participants with very valuable information, techniques and strategies for maximizing their potential on the GRE. Please note that this course does not replace studying. In addition to taking this workshop we recommend that students dedicate significant time to studying for the examination in order to be truly prepared.

Overview Law School Admissions Test Preparation (In-Person)

This four-week, eight session workshop prepares students to take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). Enrollees will review the fundamentals of each section of the LSAT (Logical Reasoning, Analytical Reasoning, and Critical Reading sections) and develop a rigorous test preparation schedule. The instructor will provide handouts, testing materials, and scored analytics for each student. Course objectives include:

  • Sitting for a full-length, proctored, practice LSAT
  • Classifying and dissecting key problem-types from each LSAT section
  • Reviewing logical principles (with a focus on necessary vs. sufficient conditions and correlation vs. causality)
  • Learning to simplify questions by reducing them to their most essential components (with emphasis placed on Logical Reasoning questions)
  • Utilizing formal notation and diagramming strategies to convey rules efficiently in logic games
  • Synthesizing and combining rules and strengthening inferencing ability

The course will conclude with each student having establishing a personalized preparation timeline goals and setting personalized timing-checkpoints for each LSAT section.

This workshop is taught by Simon Maxwell who scored in the top 99th percentile of the LSAT test.  While this workshop provides participants with very valuable information, techniques and strategies for maximizing their potential on the LSAT. Mechanical Engineering students empowered to assess critical issues related to The City of Baltimore’s aging water supply infrastructure.


Inspired by and initially supported through UMBC’s BreakingGround initiative, Professor Panos Charalambides of Mechanical Engineering first introduced an Honors section to his sophomore level Mechanics of Material course during Fall 2012.  Since then, over 70 ME undergraduates participated in this Honors section. As part of this course, students are exposed to “real world” issues through field trips, skype sessions with various industries and class visits by former students in leadership positions as well as Civil and local government leaders.  Such a visit took place on Thursday, September 12, 2019, during which the Director of the Department of Public Works (DPW) of the City of Baltimore along with three DPW division leaders, presented to this semester’s Honors class an informative account of the history, current state and challenges related to the City’s water management aging infrastructure.  


The goal is to inform our students of the current engineering challenges facing the City of Baltimore related to water management, and empower them to develop sensible pipe failure models using their Mechanics of Materials knowledge.  Such models that could incorporate available historical data pertaining to the age of the pipe, the materials used and the corrosion properties as well as the changes of the loading (internal and external pressures) and other related engineering operational aspects, could be used to assist the City of Baltimore in developing a sensible maintenance system that may help prevent the next big main break which are often very disruptive of daily life and enormously costly to the city.


In the words of the Director of Public Works of the City of Baltimore, “The challenge of ensuring that our regional water system is sustainable well into the future is critically important.  It’s crucial that DPW partner with leaders like UMBC, Dr. Panos Charalambides and the students in the Mechanics of Materials Honors Class because they will become the future engineers, scientists and administrators who manage these systems.  As much as I enjoy working with these students to share the real world consequences of their current studies and future work, at the end of the day it's really a matter of self-interest.”

The UMBC Review: Journal of Undergraduate Research is currently soliciting submissions for its 21st edition to be published in April 2020! We invite researchers of all disciplines to submit their work to our journal. The Review offers a rewarding opportunity to get your undergraduate research published in a peer-reviewed academic journal.

The deadline has been extended until September 27th! Students who have graduated, but conducted research as undergraduates within the last year, are eligible to submit their work. Get feedback on your writing from student editors, outside faculty, and staff.

The 24th Annual Women of Color (WOC)/STEM conference is taking place October 3-5, 2019 in Detroit, MI. The conference features leadership and professional development programs in addition to a career fair where many top national and local companies in the STEM fields are actively recruiting STEM interns and professionals.

Students will need to provide their own transportation.

A year ago, the UMBC community shared their experiences and concerns about the university's response to sexual violence. Retriever Courage was implemented as a response to this concern. Now, it is time to again come together as a community and talk about lessons learned, what has been done, and the next steps we can take together to make UMBC a safer and more caring environment for all.

Please consider attending the Fall Gathering on September 18, from 4 - 6 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom. During this event, the Retriever Courage Implementation Team and other campus partners will share a range of updates about the steps they are taking to improve the University’s response and ultimately prevent violence in our community. In addition, there will be a panel discussion where community members will have the chance to ask questions or provide feedback.

Release time will be granted for employees to take part in this event, and everyone is encouraged to attend.
