Mini course in Unix/Linux and informal seminars each week on research topics and preparing for graduate school

Tours of research laboratories; outings to explore the Rochester area

End of summer symposium at which participants present their research projects.

Opportunities to continue research toward publication in professional journals and/or presentation of results at national conferences during the following academic year.

Stipend is $5000; travel to Rochester and on-campus housing is provided with supplemental compensation for dining. Women, members of underrepresented minorities, and students from colleges that lack comparable research opportunities are encouraged to apply. Most applicants will have completed at least 4 semesters of college physics and math and will have completed their sophomore or junior year by June 2019. Graduating seniors are not eligible. All applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Application deadline: February 15, 2019.

The PIT helps Baltimore to identify individuals, families, and youth experiencing homelessness and connect them to much needed housing and support services. It also helps the Mayor’s Office to gather important data on the needs and characteristics of people experiencing homelessness. This information is used to inform community planning and the development of effective interventions to end homelessness in Baltimore.  

Beginning on Sunday, January 27, 2019 and throughout the week, volunteers are needed to canvass neighborhoods, hospitals, service provider’s locations, and other places that people experiencing homelessness can be found in Baltimore to administer surveys to individuals experiencing homelessness.

Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was a social activist and Baptist minister who played a key role in the American civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968. King sought equality and human rights for African Americans, the economically disadvantaged and all victims of injustice through peaceful protest. He was the driving force behind watershed events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the 1963 March on Washington, which helped bring about such landmark legislation as the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and is remembered each year on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a U.S. federal holiday since 1986.

MLK Day
After years of campaigning by activists, members of Congress and Coretta Scott King, among others, in 1983 President Ronald Reagan signed a bill creating a U.S. federal holiday in honor of King.  Observed on the third Monday of January, Martin Luther King Day was first celebrated in 1986.

MD Data Science Conference
Friday, 25 January, PAH Concert Hall, UMBC

Miner & Kasch, a AI and data science consulting firm founded by two UMBC alumni, will hold a one-day Data Science Conference at UMBC on Friday, January 25 in the Linehan Concert Hall of the UMBC Performing Arts & Humanities Building. A limited number of free tickets are available for current UMBC students. To attend, you need to register here.

The event was originally scheduled for January 14, but had to be rescheduled due to inclement weather. If you had registered and obtained a ticket earlier, you will need to re-register.

The event brings together local companies and professionals to share what new and exciting things they are doing with their data. It will be attended by business managers, startup founders, software engineers, data scientists, students, and other curious people that want to learn more about the cutting edge of data science, machine learning, and AI. The SUNFEST REU program offers:
