Computer Science Lecturer, Professor of the Practice and Visiting Assistant Professor

Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering
University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC)

The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE) at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for multiple non-tenure track positions at the ranks of Lecturer, Professor of the Practice and Visiting Assistant Professor. The positions begin Spring or Fall 2019 (January or August). Some of these positions will have teaching and/or administrative responsibilities in the computer science program to be offered at The Universities at Shady Grove, in Montgomery County, Maryland.

For the position of Lecturer, the preferred qualification is a master’s degree in computer science or a closely related discipline. Applicants for the Professor of the Practice or Visiting Assistant Professor positions should have completed or be about to complete a doctoral degree in computer science or closely related discipline. Ideal candidates will have evidence of strong organizational skills. Experience in academia, industry and government will be considered in the evaluation of the candidate. Candidates who have had a non-academic career with a demonstrated commitment to teaching are encouraged to apply.

The Lecturer and Professor of the Practice (PoP) positions are renewable. Lecturers and PoPs teach a wide range of courses, primarily at the undergraduate level. They advise students, mentor teaching assistants, and help shape departmental practices and policies. Lecturers and PoPs are expected to continue their professional growth. Lecturers have the opportunity to be promoted through the ranks of Senior Lecturer and Principal Lecturer. PoPs are expected to provide leadership in the administration of the department.

The position of Visiting Assistant Professor is a short-term appointment that is appropriate for new and recent PhDs who would like to bolster their teaching and research profiles before applying to a permanent position.

The CSEE department is large and growing, with a diverse community of approximately 2,000 undergraduate majors in computer science and computer engineering. Professors of the Practice, along with Lecturers and a cadre of tenure-track faculty, are the driving force behind the department’s broad effort to ensure a quality education for our undergraduates: working to improve computing education, curriculum, diversity, and student support. CSEE faculty collaborate with the Center for Women in Technology to increase the diversity of those who create technology, with programs designed for women in computing and engineering, transfer students from underrepresented groups, and diverse students interested in cybersecurity. In addition to our undergraduate programs, the department has graduate programs in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, cybersecurity and data science. Our faculty enjoy collaboration within the department, across departments, and with partners outside the university.

UMBC is a dynamic public research university integrating teaching, research and service. As an Honors University, the campus offers academically talented students a strong undergraduate liberal arts foundation that prepares them for graduate and professional study, entry into the workforce, and community service and leadership. We are dedicated to cultural and ethnic diversity, social responsibility, and lifelong learning. The 2018 US News and World Report Best Colleges report placed UMBC seventh in the Most Innovative National Universities category and 13th in Best Undergraduate Teaching, National Universities category. The Chronicle of Higher Education named UMBC as a Great College to Work For, a recognition given to only 86 universities. Our strategic location in the Baltimore-Washington corridor puts us close to many important federal laboratories and agencies and high-tech companies, facilitating interactions, and collaboration.

UMBC’s campus is located on 500 acres just off I-95 between Baltimore and Washington DC, and less than 10 minutes from the BWI airport and Amtrak station. The campus includes the bwtech@UMBC research and technology park, which has special programs for startups focused on cybersecurity, clean energy, life sciences, and training. We are surrounded by one of the greatest concentrations of commercial, cultural and scientific activity in the nation. Located at the head of the Chesapeake Bay, Baltimore has all the advantages of modern, urban living, including professional sports, major art galleries, theaters and a symphony orchestra. The city’s famous Inner Harbor area is an exciting center for entertainment and commerce. The nation’s capital, Washington, DC, is a great tourist attraction with its historical monuments and museums. Just ten minutes from downtown Baltimore and 30 minutes from the D.C. Beltway, UMBC offers easy access to the region’s resources by car or public transportation. UMBC is one of nine institutions represented at The Universities at Shady Grove, a consortium of universities within the University System of Maryland, located in Rockville, MD.

Applications are accepted on Interfolio http://apply.interfolio.com/57568. The initial application consists of the candidate’s curriculum vitae or resume and a brief statement describing the candidate’s teaching experience. Promising candidates will be asked to supply three letters of recommendation and a statement describing how the candidate will contribute to UMBC’s commitment to inclusive excellence. For best consideration, submit all application materials by January 18, 2019. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled. Questions regarding the positions or the application process may be directed to the chair of the search committee at *protected email*.

UMBC is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and is a recent recipient of a National Science Foundation ADVANCE award to promote hiring and advancement of women in science and engineering. We welcome applications from women, minorities, veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Intern of the Week: Shannon Cole for Biology!

<Tagline>Check out her internship with the U.S. Food & Drug Admin.</Tagline>

Name:Shannon Cole

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: U.S. Food and Drug Administration

Position Title: ORISE Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s):Biology

Work Term:Summer 2018

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

My internship at the FDA included a combination of data mining and laboratory methods research to monitor post-market drug quality. On a day-to-day basis, I conducted assays such as Reverse Phase Ultra High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (RP-UHPLC) and Microcapillary Electrophoresis sodium dodecyl sulfate (µCE-SDS) while working in the lab. These assays allowed me to obtain the protein characterization profile of the drug antibodies. In the same day, I usually transitioned over to attending planning meetings for current projects, and shifted again to data mining and searching for post-market drugs in the database. I worked on a collaboration between the FDA’s Office of Surveillance (OS) and Office of Biotechnology Products (OBP) to develop rapid techniques for characterizing monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that are used in therapeutic drug products. By obtaining characterization profiles of mAbs, OS is better able to regulate manufacturing firms to maintain product quality to ensure the safety of consumers.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard of the position in the early Spring semester. I found a listing on UMBCworks and sent in my resume only. I was contacted by my mentor in March and she set up an interview. She asked me to fill out an official application through zintellect. I filled out the application the same day and had an interview with her a few weeks later. She notified me the next week that I had gotten the internship. In a previous semester, I utilized the Career Center’s resume reviewing help to improve the content and appearance of my resume. I think this clearly had an impact on my marketability to recruiters!

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I have greatly enjoyed working at the FDA this summer because I am constantly learning new things and developing new skills. There is always something that needs to be done and the ORISE internship program is very rigorous. I have appreciated the high standards I am held to because I know my mentor is teaching me the skills that will make me successful in a career later down the road. The FDA is a very interdisciplinary and multifaceted organization and I am constantly impressed by the multitude of people, jobs, and projects at the agency. Coming from a Biology background, I have been able to develop new skills that are directly and indirectly related to my major, such as laboratory techniques and data mining. By training me in a variety of settings, fields, and skill sets, the FDA internship program has made me into a more well-rounded professional for both an academic setting, and for when I enter the workforce.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe I have made an impact through my work because the laboratory techniques I have studied and the database work I have done contribute to improving the FDA’s regulatory influence when monitoring post-market drug quality. In this way, my work benefits the public by assessing drug quality to ensure patient safety and promote public health.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Always go to the interview. Even if you are unsure if the job is right for you, always interview. At first, I was skeptical the position fit my interests for a summer internship, but the interview allowed me to find out more about the organization, job duties, and staff. After seeing the campus and meeting the people in person, it was much easier for me to see myself working there. By the end of my time at the FDA, I found I had learned so much and gained so many valuable experiences. My internship experience has greatly influenced my future career goals and taught me skills that I would not have learned in a classroom.

Shannon has since accepted a full-time offer to continue working with the FDA after she graduates in December.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week? Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
Researcher of the Week: Avi Newman

<Tagline>Early Detection of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome</Tagline>

Avi Newman is pursuing a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (2020). He is a UMBC Merit Scholar, a MARC U*STAR Scholar, and a Meyerhoff Affiliate Scholar.

Currently, my research focuses on developing the methodology for the detection of trace amount of N2-Ethylguanine using liquid chromatography, triple quadrupole (LC-TQ) mass spectrometry instrumentation. My emphasis is on N2-Ethylguanine as it serves as a potential biomarker for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), and therefore the detection of trace amounts of it could lead to early detection of this disorder in newborn or young children, and in turn, earlier treatment.

How did you find the research opportunity?

I found this opportunity through lots of emails and discussions with professors. I sent 10+ emails before finally joining the Molecular Characterization and Analysis Complex (MCAC). After meeting with Dr. LaCourse and the MCAC team, I was asked if I wanted to join as an Undergraduate Researcher, and I haven’t looked back since.

Who is your mentor for your research?

My mentor is Dr. William LaCourse, in the department of Chemistry in Biochemistry. I thought Dr. LaCourse’s lab would be a good fit as the field of Bio-Analytical Chemistry seemed like the perfect interface of Biochemical research I was eager to become a part of.

Do you get course credit for this work? How much time do you put into it?

I’ve been doing research for purely the experience and for credit. I am currently enrolled in CHEM 399, have completed two semesters of PRAC 098, and have already enrolled for CHEM 499 for the coming spring semester. On average, I put in about 12 hours a week during the school year and around 40 hours a week during academic breaks.

How did you learn what you needed to know to be successful in this project?

Though my background in Biochemistry helped, I learned most of the complex analytical technique from my research mentors in the lab. Since I had yet to take Analytical Chemistry prior to joining, it was necessary to pick up the skills and knowledge needed while on the job.

What was the hardest part about your research?

The hardest part is the patience and resilience needed to be an effective researcher. Sometimes, it will take days or weeks to finally achieve some semblance of the results you were looking for. Rather than sulk in defeat, try to understand what could’ve went wrong and how you could fix it during your next attempt. This process is instrumental to anyone who wants to be a successful researcher.

What was the most unexpected thing?

The most unexpected thing is how close I’ve become with everyone working in my lab. They’ve become a second family to me, and we help each other with any problems we may have.

What has been the most rewarding part?

The most rewarding part has been being able to see my research develop from an idea to a reality. It’s been a lot of hard work, but it has definitely paid off!

How does this research experience relate to your work in other classes?

Since I do research in an Analytical Chemistry laboratory, I am able to directly apply my research experience to my course work in Chemistry and Biology. Specifically, all of what I’ve learned so far in Analytical Chemistry, the spectroscopy sections from Organic 2, the molecular biology I’ve learned from my Biology coursework, and all the basic laboratory techniques I learned in my Chemistry/Biology lab courses.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

My greatest token of advice would be to start early! Research is an incredibly rewarding and unique experience that you will not obtain from any class. It brightens up my day and validates all the effort I put into academics outside of the lab. Also, don’t get discouraged if you don’t find a lab at first, as sometimes despite being qualified, a research professor just doesn’t any spots open. Be persistent and soon you’ll find the lab of your dreams!

What are your career goals?

My career goals include obtaining a Ph.D. and then becoming a research professor or full-fledged researcher!

What else are you involved in on campus?

Along with research and classes, I’m also the VP of the UMBC Chemistry/Biochemistry council of majors (ACS), a TA for BIOL 141, an LRC tutor, and a member of the Global Brigades service organization, meditation club, Jewish Learning Connection, Vietnamese Student Association, and Korean Student Association.

How will you disseminate your research?

I have presented my research at both the Summer Undergraduate Research Fest (SURF) and Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS) here at UMBC and plan to present at URCAD and at the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS).

Students will have the opportunity to work on a piece of their own scholarship or develop a research project in consultation with U-M faculty and graduate students in their field.
