What You Need To Know About the Undocumented Immigrant Experience

Get ready for Critical Social Justice: Ignite with our What You Need to Know series. Written By Becca Mann, Mosaic Intern for Gender Equity, Social Justice, and Inclusion and Carlos Turcios, Coordinator for Student Diversity and Inclusion in Campus Life.

The term undocumented immigrant relates to a foreign-born person who is currently living in another country without legal authorization, whereas unauthorized migration relates to the action of moving to another country through means outside of what is permissible by that government. To most living in the United States, these definitions are not new. Although immigration to the new world began since the inception of the United States, the concept of “illegality” was something created in the late 19th century. For each era of immigration, representation in the media clearly depicted imagery suggesting how immigrants looked like, the languages they spoke, why they were here, and how it affected the livelihood of Americans of that time.

In 2014, the majority of undocumented immigrants residing in the United States came from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and China. Forty percent have less than a high school degree and about half have very limited to no English language skills. (Migration Policy Institute, 2014). Foreign policy, poverty, violence and civic unrest in their countries of origin are just some of the reasons why immigrants leave to the United States.

The truth is immigration policies have always been convoluted to understand. Immigration policies have continuously expanded throughout the different waves of immigration that have created “gaps” to those who fall within “gray areas”. These complications on determining the statuses of immigrants have led to recent executive decisions such as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for various countries. More recent legislative decisions (i.e. attempts at terminating DACA and TPS), have affected general societal attitudes toward immigrants, especially the undocumented immigrant population.

Despite immigration being a common topic during election seasons, rarely do English-only speakers get a preview of what underlies in the experiences of the people living with this identity. Different nationalities, time of entry, age groups and socioeconomic statuses are only some factors that drastically affect the lived experiences of immigrants in the United States.

So you’re probably asking yourself “what can I do to help?” Below are some suggestions on what you could do to be a better ally:

Use the term “undocumented immigrant” instead of “illegal immigrant.” Undocumented immigrants are simply that, they don’t have official papers to be in the country where they are currently residing. Labeling them “illegal” is viewing their action of immigrating as an attack, suggesting their human existence is unlawful. In reality, being an undocumented immigrant is a violation of a civic law and not considered a federal crime.

Educate yourself on the U.S. immigration processes. Most people accuse undocumented immigrants of “skipping the line”and they just need to wait to live here legally. However, the official ways to legally enter this country have not changed since the Immigration Act of 1965 and sometimes this “line”does not exist for certain people. For those who have a line, the wait may be too long that it endangers their livelihood.

Remove needing a Social Security number from applications. Undocumented immigrants don’t have Social Security numbers and a lot of job applications, health forms, or other documents require that you include one. This excludes the entire undocumented population from opportunities like jobs, healthcare, welfare, and education among many others simply because they don’t have a Social Security number.

Stop assuming that immigrants “look a certain way.” Although statistics do show that the majority of immigrants come from Mexico and Central America, that does not mean that people from other regions can not hold this identity. Likewise, the nationality does not assume race and people can look very different regardless of where they are from. Be conscious of the diversity within the immigrant community.

There are ways to support immigrants and get involved!

Retriever Immigrants United, or RIU for short, is a brand new student organization on campus this semester. This org focuses on community building, education, and empowerment. The mission of this group is to provide a space for all statuses of immigrants (e.g. undocumented, DACA, Temporary Protective Status, first generation, second generation) and allies to provide support and share resources.

General Body Meetings are from 6 p.m. -7 p.m. every Wednesday in Math/Psych 105.

You can find Retriever Immigrants United on myumbc and Facebook. Also you can contact retrieverimmigrantsunited@umbc.edu with any questions or more information.

The Mosaic myumbc page also has a folder under the “Files” tab with a lot of helpful information.

To learn more, come to our event “CSJ Igniting Consciousness Into the Immigrant Experience” on Wednesday, October 24 from 5:30-7 pm in Commons Skylight.

Researcher of the Week: Anna Feerick

<Tagline>“Researching outside my field has cultivated my skills!"</Tagline>

Anna Feerick (’20) is earning a B.S. in Chemistry, with a minor in Environmental Science. She is a URA Scholar and a Merit Scholar.

Title of your research project:

Spatiotemporal Detection of Diverse Contaminants of Emerging Concern in Chesapeake Bay Water, Sediment, and Oysters

Describe your project:

My project is on detecting contaminants of emerging concern, which are chemicals that have been recently detected, or are only persistent at virtually insignificant levels. The focus is the Chesapeake Bay, specifically its water, oysters, and sediment.

Who is your mentor for your project?:

My mentor is Dr. Lee Blaney in the Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering department. I got connected though my advisor Dr. Tara Carpenter when she realized that the research I wanted to focus on was not available through the current chemistry research opportunities at UMBC. Dr. Blaney’s lab focuses on environmental and chemical engineering research, which is what I hope to go to graduate school for.

How did you become interested in this project?:

I became interested through reading the posters and papers that were previously submitted about this project. The level of detection that could be achieved of these minuet chemicals amazed me, and the direct connection to the environment I lived in made the project feel real.

What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?:

The hardest thing about my research is the learning curve I faced when entering a chemical engineering lab. As the first chemistry major to work in Dr. Blaney’s lab, I felt slightly overwhelmed with what I was expected to accomplish. The people in the lab made the transition enjoyable and were always willing to teach me anything I didn’t know.

What has been the most rewarding part?:

The most rewarding part has been becoming an expert in a subject I would have never been able to touch if I stayed within the chemistry field while an undergrad. Researching outside of my field has given me so many skills I would have never had the chance to cultivate otherwise.

How will you disseminate your research?:

I am presenting my research in poster form at URCAD, the Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Chemical and Biological Sciences, and at the AAAS conference.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?:

My advice is to look outside your major for research. There are so many opportunities that are available to you if you are willing to step outside the box and learn a new subject from scratch.

What are your career goals?:

I plan on entering industry for 1-3 years, and then apply to graduate schools to gain a graduate degree in environmental chemistry, environmental engineering, or a related field.

Intern of the Week: Mamadou Diallo for Mech. Engineering!

<Tagline>Check out his internship with Regal Beloit</Tagline>

Name:Mamadou Aliou Diallo

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Regal Beloit

Position Title: Engineering Design and Applications Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s):Mechanical Engineering

Work Term:Summer 2018

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

As an intern in the Applications team, my duties are to review customer requests and select couplings that best meet their application needs. This involves ensuring that selections are neither overemphasized or undersized, which would lead to overpricing or failure, respectively, and that they meet industry regulations. This also includes making engineering modifications to standard couplings as needed in order to meet specifications.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I first learned of the position during the Spring 2018 Career Fair after speaking with the recruiters, who suggested that I apply online. After applying for the position through UMBCworks, I was called in for an interview. I was finally offered the position after two interviews.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I enjoyed that fact that my job was never repetitive. Every application is different and therefore requires me to conduct lots of research, almost like a detective. As a result, I learned much about coupling applications in other industries such as steel, paper, and oil. Additionally, I enjoyed working with and learning from other engineers in the company. Everyone was understanding and helpful in making me feel comfortable not only at the beginning of the internship but throughout. The company also has a great culture.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I think my work made a valuable impact as it helped in making sure that requests were processed in a timely manner. I also worked on projects to help improve the efficiency of the process, which will positively impact the company long term.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Be involved in extracurricular activities. After being hired, I spoke with one of the recruiters as to why I was selected out of the many applicants. She replied that my involvements outside of the classroom were what stood out the most. For her, it showed that I was a well rounded individual and that I am able to manage multiple responsibilities at once. Extracurricular activities are a great way to distinguish yourself from every other student out there. And they show that you have some leadership experience and that you’re driven, which are skills highly valued by any employer.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week? Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
