Bikes, Haircuts, & Lenses: the Fluidity of Intersectional Feminism

Harini Narayan is a Student Staff member at the Women’s Center. She is an MLLI major and is currently a co-facilitator of the Women’s Center’s discussion groups, Between Women.

The lyrics, “I am woman, hear me roar!,” made history thanks to singer Helen Reddy, lending an amazingly catchy slogan to the movement of women’s rights. The phrase itself is innocuous, associating strength with femininity. Girl Power and the Future is Female are other popular slogans adopted by modern-day feminists (these examples are literally lifted from shirts that I own) with the goal of empowering their users.

Empowerment is like a haircut: the styles that suit people largely vary, and not everyone prefers what looks conventionally attractive.

A huge issue with modern-day feminism, or the Second Wave, is the Westernized perversion of what liberation looks like. This concept is commonly dubbed, “white feminism,” and usually consists of white women enforcing standards of equality centered solely around their status while simultaneously disregarding the privilege afforded to them by their race. This type of indirect discrimination is often not purposeful, but can be a product of ignorance. When people do not consider the varied lens through which others experience the world, they do not consider the effects of multifaceted identities on marginalized people’s perspectives. Intersectional identities overlap like different colors, creating new ones through these combinations. If sexual identity and ethnicity are the colors red and blue, respectively, then the intersectional identity they create would be purple. However, when those representative colors are not alike between individuals, confusion arises: one person’s purple identity can be misidentified by someone who does not see both blue and red; to someone who cannot see blue, red is the only identity that is recognized. Building bridges toward intersectionality begins with understanding this concept of different lenses. No two people have identical sets of lenses, but that does not invalidate the existence of lenses unlike our own. I may not have a blue lens to mix with my red, but perhaps my intersectional identity is represented by orange, made by the same red with my unique yellow. What makes an inclusive feminist is a person’s ability to recognize and validate the identities that are unlike their own and respect cultures to which they might not belong or even understand.

Upon reading the phrase, “Forcing opinions about religious head coverings on female and nonbinary Muslims,” what do you imagine? Is it a man forcing his wife or daughter to wear a hijab, or is it a “free the nipple” Westerner telling her/them to take it off and conform to their idea of freedom? White feminism is very exclusionary and, more often than not, is also subtly cissexist and racist. It’s what decrees that all Muslims that choose to wear head coverings must be oppressed, because why else would they do that? It can’t possibly be their own choice. An intersectional feminist, Muslim or not, would be able to understand that freedom from oppression lies in the ability to make decisions for oneself.

Exclusionary logic undermines women under the guise of liberation: it implicitly creates a preconception of what freedom looks like. Objectively, housewives that choose their own lifestyle are every bit as empowered as a female CEO. The power lies in the freedom to make such decisions for oneself. Making the assumption that a woman can’t be free unless she emulates men in mannerisms, occupation, or lifestyle perpetuates misogynistic stereotypes that only further the stigmatization of feminism. The concept of “white feminism” is overtaking a movement that is supposed to represent equity over equality.

The concept of equity vs. equality is pictured above. Equality is everyone receiving the same exact bike, even though only one person of the four can ride it comfortably. Equity, on the other hand, is everyone receiving something catered to their individual needs for a result of all four people being able to comfortably ride their own bikes.

Perception of women is an equity vs. equality issue, as well. Empowerment is not a one-size-fits all concept, but rather it is the readily available option to live on one’s own terms, without answering to stereotypes or discrimination. Empowerment should mean nobody looks down on nurses, teachers, or homemakers, as if their occupations are unworthy of respect because they are female-dominated fields. For some women, empowerment is Helen Reddy’s, “I am woman, hear me roar!” but for some, empowerment is quiet and unassuming. Power comes from the ability to make a choice, and to have that choice be respected.

Beginning the Job Search

<Tagline>Full time, part time, or internships!</Tagline>

Whether you’re graduating and looking for a full-time position (congrats!) or looking for a summer internship, the time has arrived to begin the search. The benefits of internships are extensive. Some majors or programs require them, and even if they aren’t required, they’re a great way to gain experience, make contacts in your field, get a feel for different company cultures, and (maybe) earn some money. As for full-time positions, the answer is obvious. You’ve spent the last four(ish) years of your life earning this degree, and now you get to go out into the real world and put the degree to use!

So, how do you find these internships and job opportunities? There are two main ways:

In Person

The Career Center offers many events through the semester to facilitate connections between employers and students. You can check out all our coming events on our calendar, but I’ll highlight three types here:

On The Roads: These require you to sign up, but it’s definitely worth it. The Career Center takes you by bus to the company where you get to talk with employees and get a feel for the culture and workplace.

UMBC Connects: These events are hosted on campus, no RSVP required. Show up and chat one on one with company representatives.

Career Corner: The least formal of the three options. Stop by the table set up in the Commons and chat for a few minutes with recruiters.

If employer recruiters are feeling a little too intimidating for you at the moment, I’d highly suggest coming in and talking with the Career Center Internship and Employment team. You can make a 30 minute appointment through UMBCworks, and they’ll walk you through the process. When I was a freshman, I came into the Career Center with no idea where to begin or what to do. They helped me land the most amazing summer position. Also consider signing up for the Intern Success Conference on November 7th! There’ll be a panel, keynote speaker, and information sessions all to help you land that perfect internship.

Online

Over the last few years, online networking and job search tools have exploded in popularity. Check out a few of our favorites:

UMBCworks: Just for UMBC students and alumni! Find all types of jobs and on-campus interviews here.

Links by Major: These give you websites and resources exclusive to your major!

Vault: Find companies by types of programs, locations, and majors hired. Then check out reviews from current and past employees.

Linkedin: The classic. There's a reason everyone’s on Linkedin. One of the best ways to network online. Check out our guide here.

If you’re lacking inspiration or not sure what exactly you’d do at an internship, take a look at the Career Center’s Intern of the Week series. Once a week, we interview UMBC students who completed internships about their favorite parts of the job.

Next week, we’ll go over more tools the Career Center has to help you reach your career goals. Over the next few days, look out for events connecting you to Northrop Grumman, T. Rowe Price, and the Naval Surface Warfare Center. Also, be sure to sign up and attend our Diversity Recruitment event! You’ll get to network with recruiters and eat a free dinner. Good luck with your applications, and I’ll see you next week!

Researcher of the Week: Ben Hyatt

<Tagline>"The time is now to start summer research plans"</Tagline>

Ben Hyatt is a mathematics major with minors in physics and philosophy, who will graduate in 2021. He is also a Honors College scholar.

Title of your research project:

Characterizing and Navigating Small Bodies with Imaging Data

Describe your project:

My project focused on the analysis of a variety of bodies in our solar system – including moons, asteroids, comets, and even entire planets – using an aggregate of image and altimetry data taken from a multitude of spacecraft on several NASA missions and one JAXA mission. The goal in doing so was to create highly accurate shape models of the bodies, allowing scientists to theorize about the geological development of the bodies, and/or to aid future navigational tasks when coming in contact with the bodies’ surfaces.

Who is your mentor for your project?

My mentor is Dr. Carolyn M. Ernst, a Planetary Scientist in the Space Exploration Sector (SES) at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Fulton, MD.

How did you find your mentor? Why did you choose them?

I first met my mentor as a high school student, applying through APL’s “ASPIRE” program. Funnily enough, my mentor was not the scientist who first interviewed me, but somehow, my name and resume ended up on her desk, and she flat-out offered me the position before meeting me. Of course, I accepted, although I barely knew what I would be working on (beyond the general scope of space exploration). After getting to know her and the project, I was excited, and motivated to find a connection between my mentor’s experience in planetary science and my passion for applied mathematics. Quite luckily, things worked out in that respect.

How did you become interested in this project?

I have always bought into the idea that space is the final frontier, and that the next several generations of mankind will continue to make heavy strides in support of space travel. While there are many factors that go into making such a quest a reality, I was confident that with my plans to study math and physics, I could somehow make a relevant impact. This project was not the angle I first envisioned entering the industry, specifically because the study of rocky bodies’ topography can be most easily appreciated from a geo-physical perspective, not an abstract mathematical one. Nevertheless, over the past two years with my mentor, I have become more aware of the math at work in the background (embedded in copious amounts of code), and discovering this relevancy more than kept my interest.

What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?

The sheer amount of tracking, organization, and reiteration of data is by far the biggest paradigm shift that I went through. Specifically, I would often work through lists of thousands of images of the bodies, both to assess image quality/content and to figure out the next steps in their processing. There is a big jump both in effort and complexity between the clichéd three trials in an experiment-based class and the real-life truck-load of data that is acquired over the course of a mission in space. However, I found it beneficial to engage in the routine analytical tasks; it is great practice to take advantage of a massive quantity of data by looking for patterns and deviations from the norm. Of course, I would wager that this principle applies in more areas than just data analysis.

What has been the most rewarding part?

Beyond the fact that I got way closer to actual space exploration missions than I ever dreamt of, the biggest reward of my work was succeeding with the challenge of applying my work to my area of study. I think that you have to be fairly lucky to get a job or internship that precisely lines up with your research interests, so whatever you end up doing, finding some connection is important. In my case, by having long and detailed conversations with my mentor (communication is crucial), we found mutually beneficial tasks that assisted her goals in planetary science and mine in applied mathematics. Most recently, I have been reading through abstracts that describe the linear algebra and calculus that is going on behind the scenes whilst I do analysis from the planetary science perspective. It is incredibly refreshing to be able to appreciate my work on multiple levels.

How will you disseminate your research?

On two previous occasions, I have given presentations to other interns and coworkers at APL about my research. In addition, after their completion, the projects that I have worked on will be presented at various conferences in the space community over the next few years, and my name will be listed on the abstracts as a contributor to the studies. Some of the first projects that I worked on that have since been concluded have been published in various journals. I hope to continue to tell people about my work, and as I continue to do more research, I am interested in participating in URCAD as well!

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

It’s never the wrong time to apply! Many of the scientists that I worked for at APL always dreaded the end of the summer season, when the majority of the interns would predictably return back to their college routines. So clearly, I’d say that if you can fit the time into your schedule, there will be good job availability in many fields during the Fall through Spring timespan. On the flipside, it’s always great to start thinking about next summer early: this is when most other college students will be aiming to find their next opportunities.

What are your career goals?

Once I graduate from UMBC, I am looking to immediately begin working towards a Ph.D. in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics. I would like to diversify my research before graduating though, so that I can have a clearer picture about what exactly I want to research. I am considering looking for future employment with NASA, because my exposure to the industry has been positive, but I am also interested in seeing what other opportunities are available. Mathematics has a deceivingly broad range of applications, and I’ve only uncovered a small fraction of them so far.
