Intern of the Week: Ashley Batista for Biology!

<Tagline>Check out her internship with UHS/Office of Health Promotion</Tagline>

We work to provide students with information about sleep deprivation, alcohol and other drugs, sexual health and birth control, just to name a few topics. We teach common strategies to make better healthy decisions as well as bring awareness to the resources provided to them on and off campus.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard about this position through an email sent by the Internships & Employment Team in the Career Center stating that Peer Health Educators were wanted and that applications were being taken. I filled out the application and sent it in to my now supervisor by April 28th. One or two weeks later I was contacted in regards to making an interview appointment. I went to the interview and a couple weeks later, I received the "congratulations" email confirming my position for the upcoming year.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I've enjoyed being able to educate students on critical health issues that are prevalent among college students and show them ways to better themselves and the UMBC community in the hopes of influencing lifelong healthy choices beyond their college years. I also enjoy being able to work with a supportive group of people who also believe in providing guidance within health.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe that I've been able to give students more of a choice when it comes to their autonomy over their health. We're so stuck in the everyday routine of school, work, internship, study, volunteer, etc. that we forget we have the choice to do something different and make healthy decisions for ourselves. We can make choices for the benefit of ourselves and for others.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would advise them to be diligent and persistent if they want to see results. I would also advise them to keep an open mind because these experiences may help shape whether or not this is a career area they want to be in.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned. In addition, I filled out United States Citizenship and Immigration Services(USCIS) immigration forms for clients, and wrote financial affidavits for fee waivers. My duties also included notifying clients via telephone or mailings about matters related to their applications and assisting the immigration team with tracking, filing, and mailing relevant documents, applications, and notices of action.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I obtained this position through the UMBC Career Center. With their help, I was able to make my resume stronger, and improve my interviewing skills.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I enjoyed working with refugees from all over the world, and helping them obtain immigration status here in the United States. Working in such a diverse environment has inspired me to help others in the future adjust to the American way of life. As the daughter of immigrants myself, I am thankful for the sacrifices my parents made when coming to the U.S.Working at the IRC has emphasized the fact that America is a nation of immigrants, FOR immigrants, who continue to make positive contributions to our society.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Unfortunately, more and more immigrants are being denied entry to the United States nowadays. America has always been the land of opportunity, and I believe that everybody should get the chance to succeed in our country. The refugees and asylees that came to the office are from war-torn countries and are grateful for our service. Through this internship, I gained insight into the world of international development and humanitarian relief work. I hope to use this experience and my newfound knowledge to bring awareness to these issues individuals face everyday.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Reach out, and do not be afraid to show your achievements to a potential internship/workplace. More than 30 faculty members across five departments and two colleges at UMBC guided the students in their research.

“The experience helped us to think like scientists,” says Olufolake Majekodunmi ’21, biological sciences and psychology.

Participants in the UMBC STEM BUILD Training Program also received training in writing personal statements, analyzing academic journal articles, constructing their resumes and more.

Ewnet Sisay ‘20, Mechanical Engineering, studied zebrafish embryos with developmental biologist Rachel Brewster. “I hope to go for a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, so I wanted to try biology before committing to a Ph.D,” Sisay says. The result? “I really love it.”

In addition to sharing the benefits of their experiences, the student also spoke to how research can sometimes be an emotional roller coaster, peppered with challenges and failures. But by working through those issues, they came to see failures as growth opportunities, rather than setbacks.

Brett Lucht, a student at Marist College and recipient of an NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates award, found a way to see the positive in the challenges he faced while working with physical chemist Lisa Kelly. “Failures are a part of research,” he says, “and we’ve learned from them, so they were good failures.”

Bill LaCourse, Dean of the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, which organized the event, took a moment at the research festival to tell the students that although they are still early in their scientific careers, working to answer questions no one has ever answered before is a noble and exciting challenge. He shared his hope that their time as UMBC researchers “lights a flame of passion that will drive you to greater undertakings…with joy and wonderment.”

“It has been our privilege to host you here at UMBC,” said LaCourse. “Your spirit is an inspiration to us all.”

Image: Students explain their research to attendees at SURF 2017.
Announcing the Women’s Center Scouts!

Girl Scouts. Radical Monarchs. Lumberjanes. Pawnee Goddess.
And now… Women’s Center Scouts!

Time and time again, Women’s Center staff get the question, “How do you join the Women’s Center?”

Our response is “Easy! Come and hang out in our lounge! Come to events. You don’t have to join.”

To which we get an “Oh. Okay.”

We get it. Being a part of something is special. Showing your loyalty and commitment to a cause is empowering. Finding home and belonging in a space that means something to you, means something to us.

So, now, you can “join” the Women’s Center by being one of our fearless and loyal Scouts!

Here’s the deal. To become a Women’s Center Scout, first start by joining the Women’s Center myUMBC page and following at least one of our social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram). If you’re already a member and following one of our pages, great! You’re one step closer.

Next, it’s time to save the dates! Each Scout must meet the challenge of attending at least 3 different Women’s Center events throughout the fall semester. The 3 different events must meet the following criteria:

1 Discussion-Based event
This includes Knowledge Exchanges, Pop-Culture Pop-Ups, and any identity-based discussion groups

1 Skill-Based workshop/event
This includes workshops like Supporting Survivors of Sexual Violence, Women + Leadership events hosted by the Women’s Center, or events like Trans and College

1 Critical Social Justice: Ignite event
So many events throughout the week of October 22-26th! Visit the CSJ website for details.

From the above challenges, your duty as a Women’s Center Scout is to ensure that you attend 1 event during first 8 weeks of the semester and attend 1 event during second 8 weeks of semester. This will require planning and strategy, Scouts!

Okay…. you don’t need to keep swiping, but do keep reading!

Over the course of the semester, we may also announce bonus Scout challenges to enhance the experience so do stay tuned to our social media pages!

Any UMBC community member who completes the challenge by December 1st gets a Women’s Center T-shirt and a shout-out on our social media pages (any maybe some badges – we’re still working on those details).

This is the front of the cool Women’s Center shirt you’ll get after you complete your Scout Challenges!

All UMBC students, faculty, and staff are welcome to participate!

For questions, stop by the Women’s Center or email us at womenscenter@umbc.edu.
