Intern of the Week: Justine Cataneo for Performing Arts!

<Tagline>Check out her internship with Inside Broadway in NYC</Tagline>

Name:Justine Cataneo

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Inside Broadway

Position Title: Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s):BFA Acting

Work Term:Summer 2018

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

Every day I am involved in completing different tasks at my internship. I travel from Middletown, NJ to New York, NY on the train and go to 130 9th Avenue. When I come into the office, I am usually given a list of tasks. These tasks can include: delivering checks to actors and/or teaching artists, making Playbills for school programs, researching items for our silent/live auction. I also inventoried all of the items in our stockroom and created an Excel sheet of each individual item. This sheet was sent to every teaching artist so that when they need costumes, they can easily see what we have and what needs to be ordered. This saves Inside Broadway from having to continuously pay for items that they already have stocked.

One of the most exciting parts of my job are working at our Creating the Magic events. This summer, I was able to go to Chicago and Phantom of the Opera for these events. Each Creating the Magic involves busing students from each of the boroughs to Manhattan. The students see pieces of the show and learn about the backstage jobs involved in running a show. Usually, the stage manager, lighting operator, musicians, sound engineer come onstage and do a demonstration for the children that explains their job title. The actors perform 3-4 numbers from the show. Most of these students have never seen a Broadway show, been to a Broadway theatre or have even been to Manhattan!

My favorite part of these programs is seeing how excited all of the students get at each of the demonstrations. They sit on the edge of their seats and clap and cheer for the cast members. It is rewarding to see that all of the time, effort and money that goes into these programs makes thousands of children incredibly happy. I am usually lucky enough to receive a backstage tour of the theaters and meet the actors after their performance. I love being able to introduce myself to people in the industry and to start making making connections.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

When I was in high school, I interviewed for this position. One of the schools that my company works with is my father's school. My boss was speaking to my father about how they needed an intern and he recommended me. I submitted my resume and did a phone interview. This summer, I re-submitted my work and acting resumes. Since my boss had worked with me before and was pleased with my work, she hired me immediately for the summer.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I have greatly enjoyed seeing children's reaction to theater and performance. When I go to schools and see elementary students singing and dancing for their community, it reminds me of the joy theatre brings to my life.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I am an organized and efficient worker. I think I relieved some stress off of my supervisors by always completing tasks in a sensible and timely matter. I was able to be given a list of tasks and each item would be crossed off and taken care of before I caught the train home.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would suggest making sure your internship is in your field of interest. Seek out companies who you would want to work for one day.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week? Make sure to fill out this form and stay tuned.
Summer Enrichment Experience - Baja Racing

<Tagline>High school students introduced to the Baja SAE competition</Tagline>

The Baja Racing Summer Enrichment Experience
introduced high school students to the Baja SAE competition, an international
collegiate design competition where students design and build an off-road
vehicle. SEE participants worked side-by-side with members of the UMBC Baja
team to learn how to design and build a vehicle. During this one-week summer
camp experience, students used computer-aided-design and analysis, gained
hands-on experience machining and welding, worked on an actual Baja vehicle,
and then drove the vehicle on the UMBC Baja test track!

The program was taught by Dr.
Neil Rothman, Professor of the Practice, Mechanical Engineering, from July
9th to 12th, to future engineers entering 9th to 12th grades.

Sherman Center/Shriver Center Program Recruits PAID Fellows!

<Tagline>New Partnership launches to provide early literacy support</Tagline>

The Sherman Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities and The Shriver Center launch a new and exciting collaboration this year. The Sherman Center began working
with early childhood educators at two partner schools in the 2017-18 school
year. These schools, Lakeland and Maree G. Farring, serve students in grades
preK-8. In the 2018-19 school year, the Sherman Center will expand its work to
    two additional partner schools: Curtis
Bay and Bay Brook. Partnering with The Shriver Center's Service-Learning and Community Engagement (SLCE) Team will broaden the reach, support high expectations, and engage UMBC student leaders and participants in meaningful experiences with the local schools.

The Sherman Center collaborates with
its partner schools to implement site-specific and cross-site projects to
improve early literacy instruction, resources, supports, and outcomes. Its
focus on early literacy reflects the schools’ goals and a growing recognition
of the importance of early literacy for young children’s lifelong success. The
mission of The Shriver Center is to address critical social challenges by
bridging campus and community through engaged scholarship and applied learning.
To achieve these complementary goals, the Sherman Center and the Shriver Center
seek energetic, organized, and dependable student leaders who love children and
learning to serve as Sherman Center Literacy Fellows.

Once these Fellows are selected, schedules for the sites will be promoted through the SLCE team's Fall 2017 Service Chart and marketed throughout a number of recruitment and engagement events leading up to and including the start of the fall semester.

Please complete the following

Other contributors included the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation and the South Baltimore Gateway Partnership. Students and their supporters quickly filled the fresh space, excited to view its state-of-the-art equipment and learn about the activities it will support.

“Marigold is a perfect example of a student who dives into not only school, but extension opportunities,” shared Lakeland Principal Najib Jammal. Her experience shows how “being involved” in enrichment activities “can accelerate learning and growth,” he said.
Sen. Ben Cardin (center right) greets Lakeland Elementary/Middle student Marigold (center left) and tours the Lakeland Community & STEAM Center with Reginald Moore (far right), director, Baltimore City Recreation & Parks. Photo courtesy of Northrop Grumman.
Just one year ago, Marigold arrived from Ghana, with a love of reading but limited spoken English skills. After a year of hard work in Lakeland’s ESOL program, her English language speaking skills have blossomed. In addition to volunteering as a guide in the STEAM Center (which stands for science, technology, engineering, art, athletics, and math), Marigold serves as captain of her school’s competitive cybersecurity team.

Supporting Baltimore Students

UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski spoke at the June 1 event of the need to spotlight and support the future of Baltimore’s talented youth. He shared, “We believe in the need to be more deliberate and proactive in helping our children. We believe in Baltimore City and Baltimore City Public Schools.”

UMBC’s partnership with Lakeland Elementary/Middle School began in 2013. “The history of the Lakeland partnership has been wide-sweeping and centered on wraparound services to address the needs of the administrators, teachers, students, parents, and the community at large,” explained Rehana Shafi, director of UMBC’s Sherman STEM Teacher Scholars Program and partnership with Lakeland.

Started through the vision and support of George and Betsy Sherman and the Sherman Family Foundation, the Sherman STEM Teacher Scholars Program prepares UMBC students to become both experts in teaching STEM subjects and civic-minded educators committed to social justice and community engagement in urban schools. Sherman Scholars provide support for in-classroom instruction and afterschool enrichment, and the program has been closely involved in developing the STEAM center.
Current and former Sherman Scholars celebrate the program’s 10th anniversary, with George and Betsy Sherman (front left), program staff (front center), and Jackie and Freeman Hrabowski (front right). Peaceworkers focus on community connections, which will grow dramatically now that the new center is open. This is particularly essential in a community without a library or other public meeting areas. The center will give residents access to computers and services like financial counseling, and the community association will soon begin meeting in the space.

Growing Together

Northrop Grumman reached out to offer support for this South Baltimore community three years ago. “After the unrest of 2015 we wanted to make a difference in Baltimore, but not just make a difference in that moment,” recalled Northrop Grumman President and COO Kathy J. Warden. “We wanted to make a lasting difference.”

Warden explained, “We had resources, we had dollars, and people that wanted to help, but we didn’t know how. We reached out to UMBC and joined a fantastic partnership that already existed.”

The opening of the new center represents the growth and lasting strength of this community partnership. Knowing that Lakeland students start walking through the center doors as early as 6:45 a.m., Sandra Evers-Manly, president of the Northrop Grumman Foundation, arrived at the center ahead of the launch event to share in the children’s excitement over their new space.
Sandra Evers-Manly, Northrop Grumman vice president for global corporate responsibility and president of the Northrop Grumman Foundation, at the opening of the Lakeland Community & STEAM Center. Photo courtesy of Northrop Grumman

“The Lakeland Community and STEAM Center places a shining light on the stars that were already here and provides them with the resources and the platforms to get out and show how special they are,” said Evers-Manly. Looking out at the crowd that came to celebrate, she shared, “Our young people are so proud that so many across Baltimore took time out to say yes, you can, and yes, you will.”

Ripple Effect

The new space was created by renovating an existing Baltimore City Recreation and Parks building at Lakeland Elementary/Middle School in an innovative way. “This new STEAM Center expands our notion of what recreation should be,” said Rec and Parks Director Reginald Moore. “It is more than just athletics. It is robotics, drones, music. The possibilities are endless.” And, most importantly, says Moore, it’s a place for students to “better prepare for their future.”
Lakeland students explore new resources in the STEAM center.
