The Department of Political Science at the University of North Texas has initiated a unique program to provide undergraduate students from ALL MAJORS the opportunity to engage in graduate-level research in conflict management and peace science in a senior faculty-mentored, in-residence, eight-week, Summer Research Experience (SRE) that integrates training in civil conflict management with training in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and training in research ethics. Participants develop theoretical propositions that are tested empirically. Participants collect and analyze empirical data and report their findings in a public forum. Activities include workshops on theory development, computer simulations, research methodology, and the graduate school application process. What would it mean for survivors that the care we give to them is not limited to the few on campus either whose job it is to do this work, or who have taken a special, personal interest in it?”*

The Women’s Center has meant a lot to many alumni and we have their continued support for this season’s fundraising campaign. For Black and Gold Rush, we were lucky to chat with former (and current) community members about all of the ways the Women’s Center has been a useful and meaningful resources. Take some time to hear from Kayla Smith, a recent graduate, and ambassador for our Grit Starter Campaign for Survivors of Sexual Violence, and get some insight into why the Women’s Center was a big part of her UMBC experience!

How did your time at the UMBC Women’s Center support your current work or career path? Working at the Women’s Center gave me a framework to explain and further understand the importance of intersectional activism and feminism when I approach a particular issue in the law.

How would you describe your UMBC experience? I loved being at UMBC. I made my best friends and had some of my most personally rewarding experiences while I was there.

Share a special moment from your time in the Women’s Center. How did it shape your experience as a survivor? After I led my second Take Back the Night march, I was approached by multiple women who told me that they were able to share their stories and process what happened to them because of my bravery and courage in sharing my own experiences with trauma and recovery. To me, that was the most rewarding experience because it reminded me why my work with the Women’s center was so important.

Kayla! Thank you for your bravery, for sharing your story, and for being a lifelong supporter of our mission!

UMBC Giving Day Black and Gold Rush is an inspiring example of what the UMBC community can accomplish together. If you would like to support survivors of sexual violence at UMBC, and build a coalition of supportive allies, consider giving to the Women’s Center’s GritStarter campaign during UMBC’s Giving Day this February 28th.

ACM Faculty Talk Series

Semi-supervised Learning for Visual Recognition

Dr. Hamed Pirsiavash, Assistant Professor, CSEE

1:00-2:00pm Friday, February 23, 2018, ITE 325, UMBC

We are interested in learning representations (features) that are discriminative for semantic image understanding tasks such as object classification, detection, and segmentation in images. A common approach to obtain such features is to use supervised learning. However, this requires manual annotation of images, which is costly, time-consuming, and prone to errors. In contrast, unsupervised or self-supervised feature learning methods exploiting unlabeled data can be much more scalable and flexible. I will present some of our efforts in this direction.

Hamed Pirsiavash is an assistant professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Prior to joining UMBC in 2015 he was a postdoctoral research associate at MIT and he obtained his PhD at the University of California Irvine. He does research in the intersection of computer vision and machine learning.

A common approach to obtain such features is to use supervised learning. However, this requires manual annotation of images, which is costly, time-consuming, and prone to errors. In contrast, unsupervised or self-supervised feature learning methods exploiting unlabeled data can be much more scalable and flexible.
After the Career Fair: What Now?

<Tagline>We do so much more than just the fair!</Tagline>

Wow, thanks to everyone who came out to the Spring Career & Internship Fair on Friday! I was working there all day, so I probably saw most of you! The fair was a huge success, and I definitely saw some people leaving with smiling faces.

You might be saying to yourself, “Wait, did I miss the career fair?” If you did, you definitely need to check your email more because we made sure EVERYONE knew this event was happening! Now, don’t panic. The career fair isn’t the only place to find a job or internship. Believe it or not, the career fair is just ONE of a plethora of networking events that we hold throughout the semester. We have employers here all the time! So definitely check out our Calendar of Events to see everything else we have to offer this spring. Another fun fact: every UMBC student can also visit the career fairs of other universities in the Maryland Career Consortium! This includes Towson, Goucher, Morgan State, and several other Maryland schools! Be sure to check out the MCC’s full calendar of career fairs at www.marylandcareerconsortium.org or check out the flier attached to this post.

While at the career fair, I was able to interview a few students and ask them about their experience. One student, Tony Dang (‘18, chemistry) gives this piece of advice to future job-seekers, “Just do your research on the company, because I’ve had companies ask me what I know about them and I didn’t have an answer”. Another student, Josie Aquino (‘19, mechanical engineering) mentioned how she prepares for the fair, “I used the Career Guide, I have a hard copy and I looked it up on the website, and all the stuff on resumes was really helpful … I felt like I could make something that looks really presentable and professional.” It seems like the moral of the story is to ALWAYS PREPARE! No matter what you’re going out for, knowing your employer and knowing your resume can get you far.

Some of you might have left the fair feeling discouraged. Maybe you were totally overwhelmed, you didn’t get to talk to anyone, or when asked a question you clammed up. That’s okay! Career fairs can be a crazy experience, but what most people don’t realize is that there are tons of other ways to snag a job or internship. Employers are constantly posting positions on UMBCworks, and our website page on Where to Find Internships and Jobs has all the job-hunting websites that are worth your time. If you need more help through your search process, check out our page on the Job and Internship Search, and make an appointment to meet with our Internship & Employment team who want nothing more than to get you hired!

All I want you to get from this is 1) the career fair was not your only shot, and 2) There are people at the Career Center every weekday ready to help you achieve your goals. No need to despair! The entire month of April is Career Month, so keep an eye out for more events and opportunities.
