Semester of Internship: Spring 2024

Major: Political Science & Media and Communications Studies

Current Class Level: Junior

This semester I completed a(n)...: Internship

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization Name): World Service Authority

Location of the Organization (City, State): Washington, DC

Title of position: Communication Manager

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
As an intern with the World Service Authority, I contribute to the organization’s mission of promoting global human rights and world citizenship. My role primarily involves research, writing, and advocacy efforts that support refugees, stateless individuals, and those seeking international legal protections. On a day-to-day basis, I draft articles and updates for the organization’s newsletter, focusing on topics such as refugee assistance and legal identity documentation. I also assist with outreach efforts, communicating with individuals and organizations to raise awareness about human rights issues. Additionally, I conduct legal and policy research to help support the organization’s initiatives and advocacy strategies.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
Intrigued by the organization’s mission, I researched its work and decided that the role aligned with my academic background and career interests. I submitted my application in late fall, which included my resume and a statement of interest detailing my passion for global justice and media advocacy. Shortly after, I was invited to interview with a representative from the organization. The interview focused on my writing and research skills, as well as my understanding of human rights issues. After discussing how my experience in political science, media, and communications could contribute to the organization, I was offered the position. I eagerly accepted, excited for the opportunity to engage in meaningful work at the intersection of policy, media, and advocacy.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
LinkedIn or other social media.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
What I’ve enjoyed most about my position at the World Service Authority is the opportunity to engage in meaningful human rights advocacy while applying my skills in writing, research, and media. Working on the organization’s newsletter has been particularly rewarding, as it allows me to inform and inspire others about critical issues like refugee assistance and statelessness. I appreciate the organization's global perspective and commitment to helping individuals who often fall through the cracks of traditional legal systems. Additionally, I’ve enjoyed the flexibility and independence of the role, which has allowed me to take initiative on projects and deepen my understanding of international law and advocacy.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
Through my work at the World Service Authority, I believe I have made an impact by helping to amplify the voices of refugees, stateless individuals, and those seeking international legal protections. By writing and curating content for the organization’s newsletter, I have contributed to raising awareness about human rights issues and connecting people with vital resources. My research on international law and policy has supported the organization’s advocacy efforts, helping to inform strategies for assisting individuals in need. Additionally, my outreach efforts have helped strengthen relationships between the organization and other human rights groups, fostering collaboration in the fight for global justice.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
My biggest piece of advice for students seeking an internship, especially in advocacy or human rights, is to be proactive and intentional in your search. Look for opportunities that align with your academic background and personal interests, and don’t be afraid to reach out to professors, advisors, or professionals in the field for guidance. When applying, tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight relevant skills—whether it’s research, writing, or public outreach—and emphasize your passion for the work. Networking is also key; engaging with organizations through events, social media, or informational interviews can help you stand out. Once you secure an internship, take initiative, ask questions, and seek out projects that challenge you. Lastly, treat every experience as a learning opportunity, even if it’s outside your comfort zone, because those moments often lead to the greatest personal and professional growth.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.
"I've loved the opportunity to use my writing and research skills to support human rights advocacy at the World Service Authority. This internship has allowed me to engage with global justice issues in a meaningful way. The Career Center was instrumental in helping me refine my application materials and feel confident throughout the process."

          Abstract:

As the performance of state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) approaches fundamental material and engineering limits, we must seek novel paradigms in energy storage to power a new age of wireless electronics, mobility, and clean energy. Realizing the necessary advances in battery performance, cost, lifetime, and safety to support this transition will require breakthroughs in virtually every battery component (anode, cathode, and electrolyte). In this talk, I will provide an overview of my team’s basic research on topics ranging from development of electrolytes for improving the electrochemical reversibility of advanced metal anodes (Li metal, Zn) to increasing the stability and loading of high voltage cathode materials. I will also briefly introduce my team’s more recent efforts to develop ion-gated memory devices and the motivation for this exciting new research area.

          Bio:

Dr. Marshall Schroeder is a materials engineer with more than ten years of experience in energy storage research and development. He currently serves as team lead for the Electrolyte and Interface Science Team in the Battery Science Branch at the DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory (ARL). Before joining ARL in 2015, Dr. Schroeder received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Maryland. He was awarded the John and Maureen Hendricks Energy Research Fellowship for his graduate studies which focused on synthesis, characterization, and testing of battery materials for Li-air and thin-film solid state batteries. At ARL he has been recognized with the ARL Director’s Early Career Award and was also recognized by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering as the FY21Q3 Laboratory Scientist of the Quarter. He has published more than 50 peer reviewed research articles with >9300 citations and holds multiple U.S patents related to outcomes of this research. His current research interests include electrolytes for next generation battery technologies and development of ion-gated neuromorphic devices.

Job Search Tips for International Students

<Tagline>Key insights to navigate the job market.</Tagline>

Searching for a job as an international student can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. According to Farhan Nadeem, International Student Career Advisor at the UMBC Career Center, the key to finding success is first shifting your mindset and remembering “it’s not a problem, it’s a process.” From finding on-campus jobs to navigating work authorization, here are some practical tips to help international students confidently approach their job search.

1. Think Outside the Box for On-Campus Jobs

Finding an on-campus job is often the first challenge international students face. The trick? Don’t limit yourself to obvious places. Explore different departments, talk to faculty, and connect with peers who might know of job openings. With over 200 student organizations on myUMBC, a simple conversation today could lead to an opportunity tomorrow.

2. Get Comfortable Talking About Work Authorization

Many international students worry about discussing their visa status with employers, but the key is to be clear and confident. No sponsorship is required as a student under CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT, just an offer letter — so let them know upfront that you already have U.S. work authorization. Once you've built rapport and demonstrated your skills, you can discuss H-1B sponsorship later in the process.

3. Use Smart Filters to Find International-Friendly Employers

Instead of applying randomly, target companies that have a history of hiring international students. Websites like MyVisaJobs and H1B Grader allow you to filter employers based on past sponsorships. The more informed you are, the better you can focus your applications.

4. Network Your Way to Opportunities

Networking doesn’t mean forcing awkward conversations — it’s about engaging in spaces that interest you. Whether it's student clubs, research projects, conferences, or LinkedIn, start conversations and build relationships. Employers often hire based on trust and referrals, so making connections now can lead to job opportunities later.

5. Tailor Your Resume and Cover Letter

Would you hire yourself based on your resume? Try the 6-second resume challenge: If an employer only glanced at your resume for a few seconds, would they immediately see your value? Highlight your unique skills — such as multilingual abilities and cross-cultural experience — and format your resume to align with U.S. hiring standards.

6. Ace the Interview and Ask Questions

Interviews aren’t just about answering questions — they’re also your chance to ask them to gain clarification from employers. Be transparent about your work authorization, research company policies in advance, and use the conversation to gauge if the employer is a good fit for you.

7. Stay Motivated and Keep Going

Job searching can be tough, but remember: you are not alone. UMBC has a strong support system, and international students bring unique skills that employers value. Use LinkedIn, Retrievers Connect, and Handshake to track job openings, connect with alumni, and find success stories to inspire you.

More Job Search Tips Ahead!

Want to dive deeper? Join us at the International Student Career Conference on March 28 for expert advice, networking, and strategies to boost your job search. Register here and take charge of your career journey today!
