[REPOST] Accepting Applications: Fall 2025 Student Research Fellowship!

The Global Asias Initiative at UMBC is now offering the third round of its student research fellowship in Global Asias in the amount of $500 where students will work with faculty and community partners on an independent study in the field for a period of one semester. We’re currently accepting applications for projects taking place in Fall 2025.

The fellowship supports a research project supervised by a UMBC faculty member working in the field of Global Asias. The project should explore a topic in the field of Global Asias: broadly construed to include Asian American studies, Asian studies, or Asian diaspora studies in global context. The exact parameters (length, format, etc) will be set by your faculty advisor. Depending on your major and your academic and professional plans, your project may consist of a scholarly research project or a creative product with a significant research component. At the end of the year, students will submit the final project to their faculty advisor and may be asked to do a brief presentation on their topic to fellow students and faculty in Global Asias. We highly encourage proposals for projects that use methods, ideas, and approaches from more than one discipline. We also encourage students to consider working with a community partner, or incorporating a public-facing component into their work.

The proposed project should be humanities research. Broadly speaking, the “humanities” means the study of human society and culture. Humanities majors or minors typically include but are not limited to: Africana Studies; American Studies; Anthropology; Art and Art History; Asian and Asian American Studies; English; History; Human Rights; Journalism; Latinx Studies; Media and Communication Studies, Philosophy; Sociology; Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies.

Eligibility

Fellowship applicants should be rising sophomores, rising juniors, or Master’s students in good academic standing.

Application

A Word document with answers to the following questions in 500 words (total):
- What is your project’s title?
- What question(s) is your project asking related to the field of Global Asias, and why are those questions important to you, your community, and society?
- What is your plan for the project? What work will you do to try to answer its questions? What plans do you have for publicly sharing your project? (URCAD? UMBC Review? other)
- How do you think working on this project contributes to your own goals?

A writing sample of your best research and writing (for example, your best final paper).

A brief email from a UMBC faculty member that states their willingness to supervise the project over the course of semester and what course or independent study you will be registering for with them to support the project. (The faculty member should email their letter directly to tbhalla@umbc.edu. There’s no need to wait until the letter is complete to submit the rest of your application.)

Payment Disbursement: Payment will be distributed to the student as a stipend in two $250 amounts at the beginning and the end of the semester

If selected, students will have to complete a short onboarding process

If students are not already employed by system, they will also have to fill out an I-9

Deadline: May 1, 2025

Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions! Send all questions and application materials to both Dr. Tamara Bhalla at tbhalla@umbc.edu and Priya Bhayana at priyab@umbc.edu

Talk: Assessing DOGE's Impact on Federal Cybersecurity and Data, 3/14

Assessing DOGE's Impact on Federal Cybersecurity and Data

Dr. Richard Forno

Assistant Director, UMBC Cybersecurity Institute

12–1pm EDT Friday, March 14, 2025 online

In just its first month of operation, that has disrupted large portions of the federal government, the activities of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have worried cybersecurity, national security, and information technology experts both inside and outside the federal government. Armed with root-level access and presidential authorization---yet often lacking relevant operational expertise or any meaningful oversight---DOGE’s staff, activities, and the security culture of the current administration in which they operate often seem to violate many time-tested best practices and principles for effective cybersecurity and technology management. They may also violate longstanding federal guidelines and regulations. As such, it is likely that DOGE is creating conditions that can cause operational, cybersecurity, or privacy incidents across the federal IT landscape and subsequently placing government information systems and sensitive citizen data at risk. On the CIA (confidentiality-integrity-availability) triad, this talk will examine DOGE's activities in the context of cybersecurity and technology best practices. Is DOGE truly an “insider threat” to the federal government as some claim? And if so, what countermeasures, if any, are available to address the threat?

Dr. Richard Forno is a teaching professor in the UMBC Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, where he directs the UMBC Graduate Cybersecurity Program, serves as the Assistant Director of UMBC's Cybersecurity Institute, and is an Affiliate Scholar at the Stanford Law School's Center for Internet and Society (CIS). Prior to academia, his twenty-year career includes helping build a formal cybersecurity program for the US House of Representatives, serving as the first Chief Security Officer for Network Solutions (then, the global center of Internet DNS), and other assorted roles with the government, military/defense entities, and private sector. In 2023, he was named a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo in Pachuca, Mexico. Along with regular public analysis and commentary, his most recent book is Cybersecurity for Local Governments (Wiley, 2022), coauthored with UMBC Public Policy colleagues Professor Emeritus Don Norris and Ph.D. candidate Laura Mateczun.

Support for this event was provided in part by NSF grant DGE-1753681.

Speed Networking Tips

<Tagline>How to Make the Most of Every Minute</Tagline>

Speed networking events, like the CNMS
Career Connection Social on March 13, offer a unique opportunity to
meet professionals, build connections, and gain career insights — all in a
fast-paced format. Whether you’re a networking pro or new to these events,
    preparation and strategy are key.

Here are some tips to make the most of this
    valuable event:

1.
    Share an Impactful Introduction
Prepare a 30-second commercial that highlights your name,
major, career interests, and a fun fact or personal touch to make you
memorable. Practice your delivery to sound confident and authentic. Talking
about personal projects is also fair game.

2. Be Curious and
    Professional

Treat every interaction as an opportunity to
connect with others on a deeper level. Make
eye contact, smile, and show genuine interest and enthusiasm for the work
professionals are doing. The energy you bring leaves a lasting
impression, even if your chat is only a few minutes long.

3. Have Questions
    Ready

Prepare a few thoughtful questions ahead of time. If you have
access to the list of attendees ahead of time, look through the list and come
up with more tailored questions. In general, you can inquire about career path,
company culture, or advice for students entering the field.

3. Use a Digital
    Business Card

Leave something
with the professionals you connect with by creating a digital business card.
This can simply be a QR code that leads to your LinkedIn page or online
portfolio, or you can create a free one using sites like Popl.

4. Take Notes and
    Follow Up

Bring a notebook to jot down names, industries, and key takeaways after each
conversation. After the event, send follow-up
emails or LinkedIn requests to continue building these relationships.
It’s never too soon to build a network when you’re on the job market! Check out
the tailored AI prompts in our Career Guide for some
    additional ideas.

Don’t Miss Out!

The CNMS Career Connection Social is
your chance to network with professionals in Natural or Mathematical Sciences and
build relationships that could shape your future career. RSVP today to secure your spot!

HIGH PERFORMANCE MULTIPHYSICS MODELING OF BLOOD FLOWS WITH CELL SUSPENSIONS

  <Tagline>REMINDER: ME Seminar, Fri, 3/7/25, ENG 112, 2:30-3:30 PM</Tagline>

Dr. Jifu Tan, assistant professor in mechanical engineering at Binghamton University, will be visiting tomorrow to give a seminar. Please see abstract and biography below.

Abstract:

Modeling the complex flow of blood and mechanobiology of clots is important in understanding cardiovascular diseases and designing better treatment. However, it is challenging in modeling blood flow as it is an inherently multiscale multiphysics problem. The dynamic behavior of blood is complicated and poorly understood due to interactions between individual cells as well as interactions between the cells and the surrounding plasma and complex vessel walls. Moreover, the presence of highly deformable heterogeneous particles, such as blood cells, vesicles, and polymers, makes it particularly challenging to accurately describe the dynamics in such systems. In this presentation, a massively parallel multiphysics simulation platform developed on popular open-source code will be introduced to simulate such complex flows. The fluid flow was solved by the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), while the solid deformation was simulated by particle-based solver. The coupling was achieved through the immersed boundary method (IBM) so that different physics can exchange information with each other. The developed simulation framework was validated with various analytical solutions and experiments and shown to scale almost linearly over thousands of processors. Applications are given in clot mechanics, cancer cell detection in microfluidics, and blood flow in a patient-specific retina vascular network, demonstrating an efficient way of simulating coupled multi-physics problems.

Bio:

Dr. Jifu Tan currently is an assistant professor in mechanical engineering at Binghamton University. Before that, he was an associate professor at Northern Illinois University (NIU). He did a postdoctoral training in the department of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He obtained his Ph.D. and M.S. in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University in 2015 and 2012, respectively. He received his B.S. degree in civil engineering from Beijing Jiaotong University in 2007. His primary research interest is fluid structure interaction and its application in engineering and medicine, such as nanoparticle delivery, blood flow modeling, thrombosis and bleeding simulation, microfluidic device design for cell separation. He is also interested in high performance computing, multiscale modeling, data driven models, and machine learning. He is actively engaged in developing open-source code for scientific research. He is the recipient of the 2024 David W. Raymond Award for Use of Technology in Teaching at NIU. The UMBC Intern & Service Fund is here to change that. Your
