Researcher of the Week: Joel Tyson
Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!
Meet Joel,
He is a Biochemical Engineering major, a JHU Researcher and a presenter at URCAD 2016. Joel also gave a presentation at Johns Hopkins’ Annual Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium and gave a presentation to the Hopkins Inistitute of NanoBiotechnology.
His research focused Parkinson's disease; in this study the most toxic fibrillar form of misfolded α-syn, pre-formed fibrils (α-syn-PFF), were used to elucidate the functional domain of a nascent transmembrane receptor, JHA1, in its role as a mediator of α-syn-PFF endocytosis. Joel's advice to research students is to apply to labs or to opportunities that actually interest you. This will also make your application stronger.

Kathryn Taylor, Chemical Engineering '17: is working for the University of Maryland Baltimore County’s Center for Advanced Sensor Technology. The team is working on a project for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to develop a portable, briefcase-size device that produces therapeutic proteins, such as insulin, in war zones and disaster relief situations. Her role on the team is evaluating the purity of samples by performing silver stains. This technique is sensitive to any impurities and can also detect trace amounts of the desired protein. She says, "I am honored to be a part of this project which will have a tremendous impact on many lives."

Happy 25th Birthday Women’s Center at UMBC!
UMBC isn’t the only one with a big anniversary milestone this year (#UMBC50 #UMBCproud)! The Women’s Center is also in the spirit of celebration because this year we turn 25 years old! That’s right – the Women’s Center is half as young as UMBC itself!
The Women’s Center opened in 1991. The same year Anita Hill’s testimony allowed so many other women to be brave in sharing their stories of sexual harassment. Thelma and Louise took to the big screen. The internet was also opened up to commercial use for the first time ever (which of course would become a hugely important space for feminist activism in years to come). Great social change for women, LGBTQ folks, and other underrepresented populations has happened over the past 25 years across the globe, in our nation, and on our very own campus. The Women’s Center is proud to be a part of the social change in advancing gender equity and social justice. We still have a long way to go and the work is never done, but in this special year, we’ll take a pause to look back on our achievements.
Over the next year, we’ll be celebrating both UMBC and the Women’s Center’s special milestones. As a lead up to UMBC’s 50th Anniversary Weekend events, the Women’s Center will be hosting a 25th Birthday Party on September 13th from 4-6pm. Please join us!
We’ll be active on social media to help tell the story and importance of the Women’s Center over the past 25 years. We’ll also be working on two special blog feature to include a Then vs. Now series and Where Are They Now? series following former Women’s Center staff. Be sure to follow us on all of our social media platforms and join in on the fun by using #UMBCWC25 to share your own memories, stories, and photos of your time being a part of the Women’s Center at UMBC community.

Support The Choice Program's Jam & Slam School Supply Drive
It's NOT too late!!!
The Choice Program will host its annual Jam & Slam event on Tuesday, August 16th. Donations are still be accepted to support youth involved with The Choice Program as they prepare for the upcoming school year! The hope is that school supplies will be distributed at this event.
Supplies can be dropped off THIS week at The Shriver Center in the front lobby (office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5pm) by this THURSDAY, AUGUST 11th. This will allow for sufficient time to organize donations and identify any gaps. Please see the attached flyer for suggested items.

Researcher of the Week: Matthew Kovarek
Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!
Meet Matt,
He is a Chemical Engineering major, a NIST Scholar and a presenter at URCAD 2016. Matthew also volunteered his time as a Peer Alumni from Community Colleges, assisting potential students from Anne Arundel Community College to UMBC. And he served in the Air Force for three years. (Thank you for your service!)
His research focused upon the development of an alternative method for heat transfer to chill hot wort in the brewing process. Efficient heat transfer is necessary to ensure an adequate cold break for a clear and flavorful product. The cold break is a group of proteins that must be thermally shocked to precipitate out of solution. An ice bath is not sufficient to obtain an efficient cold break, so alternative methods must be explored.

SWEet Summer 2016 Presents: Liz Saloka

Liz Saloka (UMBC SWE Service Chair), Interdisciplinary Studies-Gender Equality in Computing, Senior graduating in May 2017. She has an internship with Booz Allen Hamilton in McLean, VA as a Systems Delivery Intern. She is working with a team of interns to create a Secure Data-Based Mobile Text and Voice App, that would allow mobile communication in a secured environment. In addition to her internship, she is pursuing my hobby of modeling and also volunteering at my local animal shelter BARCS. She is doing this internship for work experience in a technical field. This has already impacted my journey in pursuing a technology career because Booz Allen Hamilton offered her a position after she graduates this May, and she accepted! She's pretty excited to have a job lined up going in to her senior year.

Meet Max,
He is a
Mathematics and
Computer Science major and a
NIST Scholar. In his spare time he likes to participate in the youth development program at Arbutus Middle School. This program consists of UMBC students who volunteered to tutor and mentor middle school students from AMS.
Last summer, Max’s research took him to the Neutron Research Center (NCNR) where he assisted in writing (python) scripts that was utilized for the NICE neutron beam client. He designed a feature that would allow users to create custom scripts written in the python programming language to control their experiments.
