Navigating Virtual Career Fairs

<Tagline>Tips to Prepare for a Virtual Fair Setting</Tagline>

Virtual career fairs are a convenient and
effective way to connect with potential employers from anywhere. With the GCC
Virtual Career Expo coming up on March 5, now is the perfect time to
prepare so you can make a strong impression on employers and maximize your job
    and internship opportunities.

Here’s how to navigate a virtual career fair
    successfully:

1. Register and
    Research Companies Beforehand

Before the event, register
    here and explore the
list of participating employers. Review their websites, job postings, and
company culture to identify those that align with your career goals. Make a
short list of employers you hope to visit at the virtual career fair. This
should be done in order of priority to ensure you don’t miss out on your top
    choices.

2. Optimize Your
    Resume and LinkedIn Profile

Update
your resume with relevant experience and skills, and have a PDF version ready
to upload when you register. Also make sure that your LinkedIn profile is
optimized and polished—employers may check prior to the fair to see who they’d
like to speak to. If you need help with either of these materials, you can schedule
    a 1:1 appointment with a Career Advisor.

3. Prepare Your
    Elevator Pitch

Have a 30-second commercial
ready that highlights your background, skills, and career interests. Tailor it
for different employers and practice delivering it confidently. If you want to
practice in a more simulated environment, log into Big Interview and
practice your pitch in response to the “Tell Me About Yourself” prompt.

4. Dress
Professionally and Set Up Your Space

Even though it’s a virtual fair, dressing in
business casual attire helps make a positive impression should you be invited
to speak 1:1 with employers, and can even help you get into a more professional
mindset. Find a quiet, well-lit space with a neutral background to minimize
    distractions.

5. Engage Actively
    and Ask Thoughtful Questions

Should you be invited to chat with an
employer, be professional and engaged. Have questions ready beforehand and ask
about the company culture, job opportunities, and the hiring process. Express
interest in specific roles rather than just saying you’re looking for a job.
You can review job postings within the fair that you can reference in these
    conversations.

6. Follow Up with
    Employers

After the fair, send thank-you emails or
LinkedIn messages to the employers you connected with 1:1. Reiterate your
interest in their company and remind them of your conversation by mentioning
something specific and memorable that you discussed. Don’t forget to include
the specific job posting you’re interested in as well.

Ready
    to Register?

The GCC Virtual Career Expo is an
excellent opportunity to connect with top employers looking to hire graduate
students, postdocs, and alumni from the STEM, Humanities, and Social Sciences
    fields. Don’t forget to register
    today and start
preparing for a successful job or internship search!

HIGH PERFORMANCE MULTIPHYSICS MODELING OF BLOOD FLOWS WITH CELL SUSPENSIONS

  <Tagline>MARK THE DATE: ME Seminar, Fri, Mar 7, ENG 112, 2:30 PM</Tagline>

Dr. Jifu Tan, assistant professor, mechanical engineering department at Binghamton University, will be giving a seminar this Friday. Please see abstract and biography below.

Abstract:

Modeling the complex flow of blood and mechanobiology of clots is important in understanding cardiovascular diseases and designing better treatment. However, it is challenging in modeling blood flow as it is an inherently multiscale multiphysics problem. The dynamic behavior of blood is complicated and poorly understood due to interactions between individual cells as well as interactions between the cells and the surrounding plasma and complex vessel walls. Moreover, the presence of highly deformable heterogeneous particles, such as blood cells, vesicles, and polymers, makes it particularly challenging to accurately describe the dynamics in such systems. In this presentation, a massively parallel multiphysics simulation platform developed on popular open-source code will be introduced to simulate such complex flows. The fluid flow was solved by the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), while the solid deformation was simulated by particle-based solver. The coupling was achieved through the immersed boundary method (IBM) so that different physics can exchange information with each other. The developed simulation framework was validated with various analytical solutions and experiments and shown to scale almost linearly over thousands of processors. Applications are given in clot mechanics, cancer cell detection in microfluidics, and blood flow in a patient-specific retina vascular network, demonstrating an efficient way of simulating coupled multi-physics problems.

Bio:

Dr. Jifu Tan currently is an assistant professor in mechanical engineering at Binghamton University. Before that, he was an associate professor at Northern Illinois University (NIU). He did a postdoctoral training in the department of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He obtained his Ph.D. and M.S. in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University in 2015 and 2012, respectively. He received his B.S. degree in civil engineering from Beijing Jiaotong University in 2007. His primary research interest is fluid structure interaction and its application in engineering and medicine, such as nanoparticle delivery, blood flow modeling, thrombosis and bleeding simulation, microfluidic device design for cell separation. He is also interested in high performance computing, multiscale modeling, data driven models, and machine learning. He is actively engaged in developing open-source code for scientific research. He is the recipient of the 2024 David W. Raymond Award for Use of Technology in Teaching at NIU. He is also the recipient of NSF CAREER award in 2024.

Light refreshments will be provided.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Because of the size of Boeing, it has several departments spanning across multiple sectors. I work within Boeing's defense sector. My team specializes in providing analytical software & capabilities to our nation's various national agencies to support mission critical capabilities.

I am responsible for vetting and sourcing 3rd party vendors to support my team's various task orders. My day-to-day responsibilities vary, but it usually follows the following tasks; log into the work computer and attend stand-up meetings to update the team on any progress of work completed within the last week. After the stand-up, I look into various vendors/software currently on the market that I believe could boost my team's capabilities. Next I spend time working on project timelines through Microsoft Project, to reflect current updates within the project.

Since I also serve as the liaison between various vendors and my team, I end up spending sometime within vendor presentations and demos. I also gather all the weekly reports from all engineers apart from our various projects and compile it into one single report to be sent up to corporate and the customer.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. All of which contribute to Boeing’s success in supporting national security and defense initiatives.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

My best piece of advice I could give to another student seeking a similar internship is, even if you're not coding daily, understand technical concepts like the software development processes, and data analysis which will you more valuable, and learn how to interpret and communicate technical data, which is beyond crucial for this role.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

What I enjoyed most about my position was the opportunity to bridge the gap between technical solutions and mission-critical decision-making, directly impacting national security operations. The Career Center played a key role in refining my resume and interview skills, helping me effectively communicate my technical and leadership experiences to land this opportunity.

OPTIMIZING ANNUAL ENERGY OUTPUT OF LUMINESCENT SOLAR CONCENTRATORS FOR BUILDING-INTEGRATED PHOTOVOLTAICS

  <Tagline>REMINDER: ME Seminar, Fri, 2/28/25, ENG 112, 2:30 PM</Tagline>

Dr. Diana-Andra Borca-Tascuic, professor, mechanical, aerospace and nuclear engineering department, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, will be visiting on Friday, February 28, to give a seminar. Please see seminar abstract and her biography below.

Abstract:

Building-integrated photovoltaics are part of the engineering solutions portfolio being developed to address the climate crisis and meet the rapidly evolving decarbonization legislation worldwide. The luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) is a niche solar concentrator technology with the potential to be integrated into building-integrated photovoltaics. It consists of a transparent plastic sheet embedded with a luminescent species and lined with solar cells along its edges. Acting as a waveguide, it directs light

from its larger surface onto much smaller-area photovoltaics. This technology offers

several advantages, including better utilization of solar cells, effective performance in diffuse light conditions, and the ability to serve as a multifunctional envelope for vertical walls in the built environment. However, its single-digit efficiency remains a major barrier to commercialization, primarily due to escape cone losses through the light-receiving surface. Additionally, the lack of comprehensive annual energy production estimates in the literature limits understanding of its practical potential.

This talk examines the performance of wedge-shaped LSCs utilizing inorganic luminescent phosphors, which enhance energy capture at incidence angles that conventional solar panels do not effectively utilize. This behavior is studied experimentally by comparing the performance of a solar cell embedded in an LSC to one directly exposed to illumination. Using laboratory-measured power ratios and direct normal irradiance data from two case studies—Phoenix, AZ, and Albany, NY—the annual energy production for direct-beam irradiance in wedge-shaped LSCs mounted on vertical walls was determined.

Bio:

Diana-Andra Borca-Tasciuc is a professor in the mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she has been a faculty member since 2006. She holds a B.S. in physics from Bucharest University and a M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles. She is a recipient of the 2008 NSF CAREER Award and the 2013 Fulbright Scholarship. Her research interests lie in energy conversion, with a current focus on power harvesting micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), solar energy integration in building envelopes, and nanoscale thermal transport processes. Her work spans both fundamental and applied research, leading to over 100 journal articles and conference proceedings, as well as several patents and patent applications.

Light refreshments will be provided.

See you there!
