  <Title>ME graduate students win awards for their research</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Chris <span>Mullen won the first place prize in 11th <a href="https://promiseagep.wordpress.com/2015/12/10/spring-2016-university-system-of-maryland-promise-agep-research-symposium-professional-development-conference-fri-feb-12-2016/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">PROMISE Research Symposium and </a></span><span><a href="https://promiseagep.wordpress.com/2015/12/10/spring-2016-university-system-of-maryland-promise-agep-research-symposium-professional-development-conference-fri-feb-12-2016/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Professional Development Conference</a> (UMCP, MD). His work is entitled "Optimization </span><span>of an Electromagnetic Energy Harvester".  </span><span>Implementation of energy harvesting </span><span>technology can provide a sustainable, remote power source for soldiers by reducing the </span><span>battery weight and allowing them to stay in the field for longer periods of time.  </span><span>Electromagnetic energy harvesters scavenge energy from wasted kinematic and </span><span>vibration energy found from human motion. In this research, he conducted the design </span><span>study using a multi-variable optimization algorithm to identify an optimal coil and magnet </span><span>layout for maximization of power output. This work has been supported by US Army </span><span>CERDEC since 2015.</span></div><div><br></div><div>Chris and Amin Eshghi presented their research at the <a href="http://sampebw.sampe.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">SAMPE Baltimore-Washington University Research </a><span><a href="http://sampebw.sampe.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Symposium</a> (UMCP, MD) and won 2nd (poster) and 4th (oral presentation) place </span><span>prizes. Amin’s research is entitled “Parameter Study and Optimization for </span><span>Piezoelectric Energy Harvester for Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensor”. In this research, </span><span>he performed a design parameter study and design optimization for a piezoelectric energy </span><span>harvester considering vehicle speed variation, using computer simulation. This </span><span>harvester is composed of a beam which is clamped at both ends and a piezoelectric </span><span>material is attached on the top of that. To optimize the harvester performance,</span><span> the geometrical parameters of the harvester are changed to obtain the maximum power. His </span><span>research was supported by Korean Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM), 2015.</span></div></div>

  <Title>A Call to Prayer: My Return to the Muslim Community</Title>

    <p><em><span>The following is a little of my experience as a queer Muslim person. I recognize that my experience is not reflective of Islam, nor of the community of people I met at the Interfaith Center. </span></em></p>
    <p><span>For the first time since last </span><a href="http://whatiseid.com/what-is-eid/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Eid al-Fitr</a><span>, a Muslim holy holiday, I went to Jumu’ah (congregational Friday prayer). I met a person on campus who extended a warm hand and invited me to prayer which took place at the </span><a href="http://osl.umbc.edu/diversity/interfaith/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Interfaith Center</a><span>. I was both excited and terrified for a plethora of reasons. I was excited to sit amongst my sisters, to rejoin the community I had left behind me as I entered college, and to listen to the guest Sheik that was invited to give the khutbah, the congregational sermon. </span></p>
    <p><span>In the days leading up to the Friday prayer, all I could talk about was how excited I was that I finally had a friend to go to Jumu’ah with. I quickly realized, I had no idea how to be practicing Muslim anymore. I was once a Sunday school teacher and was really quite good at incorporating Islamic teachings into my life. However, since the start of college, I hadn’t really thought about being religious. I am not hijabi, a woman who wears hijab full-time. I’m not even a woman! I sometimes eat gelatin (oops!) and I don’t think I own a single piece of ‘modest’ clothing. I am a fat, queer, shorts and T-shirt wearing, ‘you kiss your mother with that mouth?’ swearing, mess of a person! Muslim people can be all of these things, but in prayer there are certain rules we must submit to. The expectation for women is to stand in a section separate from men, covered in appropriate prayer attire and hair and neck wrapped in a veil. The thought of completing some of these actions made me nervous. </span></p>
    <p><span>Friday came and I finally decided upon an outfit that was appropriate, picked a hijab and walked over to the Interfaith Center. The prayer went well, I loved the khutbah (the sermon given by the person who leads prayer, usually the Sheik) and I felt like was I finally home. Even though I had only spent an afternoon with these sisters, I knew I found a community of women who understood and loved me. In fact, the khutbah before the prayer was almost serendipitous. The Sheik recited a line about friendship. He reminded the congregation that we should all find friends that we love purely for God’s sake. With the women that surrounded me, I felt I finally found the very friends the Sheik was talking about. </span></p>
    <p><span>Despite all of the affirmation I felt in the space, I was (and am) still challenged by the fact that a large part of my identity has to be put on hold to enter into this space of prayer. Since high school, simple and arbitrary gender markers have been instrumental in the way that I’ve been able to present my identity. My name, the way I dress and talk, even the way I wear my hair have become the only way I can really be non-normative and express who I am. As I got ready for prayer that morning, I felt like I was hiding and changing who I am. I had to find clothes that weren’t form-fitting and that covered my body. I put on a hijab and while I love what hijab represents, it too plays a role in covering up important parts of my identity. I’ve been growing my locs for the past 2 years and they’ve become a prized familial tradition I don’t want to hide. But, both the hijab and the clothes were material. Whenever I was asked my name, I cringed as I introduced myself as Sister Mariam as opposed to “MJ.” I love my birthname. I love the woman I am named after and I love the religious significance of my name. But, I hate lying. I am no longer Mariam. I am not the pious Sunday school teacher anymore. I’m MJ, a queer, potty-mouth, music-loving, dances in their underwear kind of person who also happens to be Muslim. </span></p>
    <p><span>While it would be easier to just not stress over being called by my birthname and changing my appearance, I think I owe it to myself to look for a space where all of my identities are acknowledged and valued and allowed to <a href="http://www.racialequitytools.org/resourcefiles/mapping-margins.pdf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">intersect</a>. I’ve previously felt like I had to filter parts of myself to fit into certain spaces. In queer and feminist spaces, I’ve felt a disconnect from my religion. While in Muslim settings I’m forced back into the closet. It’s important to find communities and spaces where all of our identities and embodiments are acknowledged, valued, and perhaps even loved!</span></p>
    <p><span>I have yet to return to the Interfaith Center. Two weeks have gone by, and instead of joining the congregation, I steal glances as I pass the Center on my way to The Commons. I haven’t decided whether or not I’ll be going to another Friday prayer just yet. I want to be among my sisters again, but not at the cost of other parts of my identity that I’ve worked so hard to be able to express.</span></p>

    <Title>Women's Center Finals Week &amp; Summer 2016 Hours</Title>

          <div class="html-content"><br><div>Beginning on Study Day, <strong>May 11th through May 18th</strong>, the Women's Center will be closing at <strong>5pm</strong>!<br>The center will be <strong>CLOSED</strong> on <strong>May 19th and May 20th.</strong><br><br><br><span><span>Summer Hours for the Women's Center begin the week of May 23rd and run through the end of August. Our summer hours are:<br><em><strong>Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays: 10am-3pm</strong></em><br>The Women's Center space will be closed to the community on Mondays and Fridays. </span></span><br><br><br><span><em>Professional staff are still available to meet and connect with community members during thee days we are closed.     Grasping and tele-presence</h1>

    <p>In this talk I will cover two separate research efforts in robotics, both of which use human mental models to improve robotic functionality. Robots struggle to pick up and manipulate physical objects, yet humans do this with ease – but can’t tell you how they do it. In this research we focus on how to capture human data in such a way as to gain insight into how people structure the grasping task. Specifically, we look at the role of perceptual cues in evaluating grasps and mental classification models of grasps (i.e., all these grasps are the “same”). In the second half of the talk I will switch to discussing how human mental models of privacy, trust, and presence come in to play in remote tele-presence applications (“Skype-on-a-movable-stick”).</p>
    <p>Dr. <a href="http://web.engr.oregonstate.edu/~grimmc/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Cindy Grimm</a> is currently an associate professor at Oregon State University (since 2013) in the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering (application area robotics). Prior to that she was tenured faculty at Washington University in St. Louis in Computer Science (12 years). Her research areas range from 3D sketching to biological modeling to human-robot interaction. She approaches these problems with a combination of mathematical models and empirically-verified human-centered design (HCD). Mathematical models provide a sound, quantitative, rigorous, elegant basis for representing shape and function, and are a core part of the “language” of computation. Including a human in the loop is a key component of the application areas she works in; HCD provides the mechanism for addressing the fundamental problem of how to make mathematical computation “useful” for humans. She has worked with collaborators in fields ranging from psychology, mechanical and biological engineering, statistics, to art.</p></div>

    <p><span><strong><em>Briefly describe your internship, co-op,  or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.</em></strong></span></p>
    <p><span>Last summer, I worked for the National Park Service's Inventory and Monitoring program in the National Capital Region. The role of this program is to routinely assess the state of natural resources in the region's parks. Two other interns from UMBC and I spent the summer studying the ecologic role of Eastern Hemlock trees, which are dying out due to an invasive pest. For the first half of the summer, we used a GPS to map the locations of patches of hemlock trees in all the region's parks. During the second half of the summer, we randomly selected points within the hemlock patches and monitored vegetation at these points by looking for invasive plant species, assessing ground cover, and measuring trees. Nearly all my days were spent out in the field. </span></p>

    <p><span><strong><em>Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.</em></strong></span></p>
    <p><span>I found my position through the Geography and Environmental Systems Department at UMBC. One of the professors in our department, Dr. Swan, sent out an email with information on the available positions and how to apply. After submitting my cover letter and résumé (which was previously reviewed by the Career Center), I interviewed with my now-supervisor over the phone. </span></p>
    <p><br></p>
    <p><span><strong><em>What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?</em></strong></span></p>
    <p><span>I loved the opportunity to work outdoors every day, and to learn about forestry. I also appreciated the chance to do something small improve our understanding natural resource conservation in the Washington, DC region. </span></p>
    <p><br></p>
    <p><span><strong><em>How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?</em></strong></span></p>
    <p><span>By researching the interactions of an imperiled tree species with the rest of the botanic community, we enabled natural resource managers of all types to make informed decisions on how to deal with infested hemlock trees. While I would love to save all the hemlocks, understanding the effects that their loss has on the ecosystem as a whole helps those in power balance the cost of saving trees with the benefits to biodiversity. </span></p>

    <p><span><strong><em>What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?</em></strong></span></p>
    <p><span>UMBC has connections to a huge variety of fascinating workplaces. When searching for internships, try to tap these connections by working with your department or the Career Center. Don't be afraid to try something new!</span></p>

    <Title>Innovations in Cybersecurity Education Workshop, Friday June 3, UMBC</Title>

          <p>The third <a href="http://www.csee.umbc.edu/icew-2016/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Innovations in Cybersecurity Education Workshop</a> (ICEW) will be held from 9:00am to 5:00pm on Friday, June 3, 2016 on the UMBC campus.</p>
          <p>ICEW is a free regional workshop on cybersecurity education from high school through post-graduate. It is intended primarily for educators who are teaching cybersecurity at high schools, colleges, and community colleges. Anyone is welcome to attend, including teachers, students, administrators, researchers, and government officials. It will highlight master teachers and ongoing educational projects, including an effort at the US Naval Academy to teach cybersecurity to all midshipmen. The workshop will feature hands-on learning activities, including secure programming, cyber competition, and an educational game.</p>
          <p>Sessions will include:</p>
          <ul>
          <li><strong>Secure coding through hands-on exercise:</strong> Blair Taylor and Siddharth Kaza (Towson University) will show how to carry out self-contained, lab-based modules designed to be injected into CS0-CS2 introductory computer science courses.</li>
          <li><strong>Using a message board as a hands­-on learning tool for Cyber Security II:</strong> LCDR Chris W. Hoffmeister (US Naval Academy) will discuss how to solve security challenges involving a simple, configurable HTML message board.</li>
          <li><strong>Hands-on vulnerability testing:</strong> Marcelle Lee (Anne Arundel Community College) and Steve Morrill (Loyola Blakefield) will demonstrate how to engage in a hands-on challenge and learning experience to help highlight the vulnerabilities in systems, with you in the driver’s seat. Participants of any skill level will learn strategies and techniques for determining if a system is vulnerable.</li>
          <li><strong>Hands-on group threat brainstorming with Security Cards:</strong> Tamara Denning (University of Utah) will demonstrate teaching students how to think broadly and creatively about computer security threats using 42 Security Cards along four dimensions (suits): human impact, adversary’s motivation, adversary’s resources, and adversary’s methods.</li>
          </ul>
          <p>ICEW is free and open to the public — all are welcome to attend. This workshop will to be of interest to educators, school administrators, undergraduate and graduate students, and government officials. Lunch will be provided. There is ample parking.</p>

    <p>We tested bit sequences generated from the MD5 hash function using multinomial distribution and close-point spatial statistical tests for randomness. We found that bit sequences generated from truncated-round MD5 hash fail these tests for high- and low-density input choices.</p>
    <p>In 2000, the National Institute of Standards and Technology concluded a competition to select the Advanced Encryption Standard. One of the requirements for candidates was randomness of output bits. The techniques used to evaluate symmetric block cipher randomness have not been extensively applied to hash functions.</p>
    <p>In this study, we adapt a subset of the techniques used to analyze the randomness of AES candidate algorithms to study the randomness of the well-known MD5 hash function. Our approach uses high-density, lo- density, and chained-input methods to generate MD5 hashes. We concatenate these hash outputs and subjected them to multinomial distribution and close-point spatial tests. We iterated this approach over reduced-round versions of MD5. Our presentation includes specifications for the input methods, details on the statistical tests, and analysis of the statistical results.</p>
    <p>Through statistical testing of concatenated MD5 hashes, we derive results that demonstrate a link between the performance of the concatenated hash bit sequences in our statistical testing and the number of hash rounds applied to the high-density and low-density input methods. Randomness is a desirable property for cryptographic hash functions. We present a new approach that facilitates the analysis and interpretation of hash functions for statistical randomness.</p>
