OPTIMIZING ANNUAL ENERGY OUTPUT OF LUMINESCENT SOLAR CONCENTRATORS FOR BUILDING-INTEGRATED PHOTOVOLTAICS

 <Tagline>ME Dept. Seminar: Fri., Feb. 28, ENG 112, 2:30-3:30 PM</Tagline>

Dr. Diana-Andra Borca-Tasciuc, professor, mechanical, aerospace and nuclear engineering department, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, will be visiting this Friday to give a seminar. Please see abstract and biography below.

Abstract:

Building-integrated photovoltaics are part of the engineering solutions portfolio being developed to address the climate crisis and meet the rapidly evolving decarbonization legislation worldwide. The luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) is a niche solar concentrator technology with the potential to be integrated into building-integrated photovoltaics. It consists of a

transparent plastic sheet embedded with a luminescent species and lined with solar cells along its edges. Acting as a waveguide, it directs light from its larger surface onto much smaller-area photovoltaics. This technology offers several advantages, including better utilization of solar cells, effective performance in diffuse light conditions, and the ability to serve as a

multifunctional envelope for vertical walls in the built environment. However, its single-digit efficiency remains a major barrier to commercialization, primarily due to escape cone losses through the light-receiving surface. Additionally, the lack of comprehensive annual energy production estimates in the literature limits understanding of its practical potential. This talk

examines the performance of wedge-shaped LSCs utilizing inorganic luminescent phosphors, which enhance energy capture at incidence angles that conventional solar panels do not effectively utilize. This behavior is studied experimentally by comparing the performance of a solar cell embedded in an LSC to one directly exposed to illumination. Using laboratorymeasured power ratios and direct normal irradiance data from two case studies—Phoenix, AZ, and Albany, NY—the annual energy production for direct-beam irradiance in wedge-shaped LSCs mounted on vertical walls was determined.

Results show that solar cells within vertically installed LSCs generate 20% to 40% more annual energy than traditional vertically installed solar panels, depending on location and orientation (east- or south-facing). Additionally, wedge-LSCs exhibit peak power production at times traditionally considered suboptimal for standard solar panels, further increasing their value in building-integrated applications. Overall, these findings highlight the potential of wedge shaped LSCs as effective power-harvesting building envelopes. Ongoing efforts to improve efficiency through asymmetric light transmission interfaces will also be briefly discussed.

Biography:

Diana-Andra Borca-Tasciuc is a professor in the mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she has been a faculty member since 2006. She holds a B.S. in physics from Bucharest University and a M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles. She is a recipient of the 2008 NSF CAREER Award and the 2013 Fulbright Scholarship. Her research interests lie in energy conversion, with a current focus on power harvesting

microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), solar energy integration in building envelopes, and nanoscale thermal transport processes. Her work spans both fundamental and applied research, leading to over 100 journal articles and conference proceedings, as well as several patents and patent applications.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Please plan to join us!

How to Land a Tech Internship

<Tagline>Follow these steps to land your next opportunity.</Tagline>

Internships in the tech industry are highly competitive, but with the right search strategy, you can secure an opportunity that will set you up for future success. Whether you're interested in software development, cybersecurity, data science, IT, or others, here are some key steps to help you land a tech internship.

1. Build a Strong Resume and Portfolio

Tech employers seek candidates with relevant skills and experience. Highlight coursework, personal projects, hackathons, or freelance work that demonstrate your technical abilities. If you’re in software development, create a GitHub profile showcasing your code, add the link to the top with your contact information, and reference aspects of your GitHub throughout your resume. For UI/UX roles, build a portfolio website with your designs and write a narrative about how you completed projects from start to finish.

2. Gain Hands-On Experience

Practical experience is crucial to land a tech internship. If you have yet to land something formalized, consider working on open-source projects, participating in coding competitions, or taking on freelance work. Many companies also offer virtual internships and apprenticeships to help students build experience before applying for formal internships. You can also consider checking out sites like Parker Dewey and Forage.

3. Network with Industry Professionals

Networking plays a huge role in landing tech internships, as you’re 10x more likely to get a job from a referral vs. a cold application. Attend career fairs, tech meetups, and industry conferences to connect with recruiters and professionals in your field. Engage with alumni on Retrievers Connect and LinkedIn, and join student chapters of professional organizations like the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). You can also find professional associations that are relevant to your interests through our Majors Resources page.

4. Apply Early and Strategically

Many tech companies recruit interns months in advance, so it’s wise to start your search earlier than you may think. For example, you can start searching for a summer internship in the fall semester. To help with this process, first go to Handshake to and review its internship postings. Then, you can also use platforms like Steppingblocks, LinkedIn, and company career pages to find openings. Tailor your applications by incorporating keywords and industry jargon to your materials, emphasizing relevant skills and quantifying achievements.

5. Prepare for Both Technical and Traditional Interviews

Most tech internships require technical assessments or coding interviews. Practice with platforms like LeetCode, HackerRank, or CodeSignal, which have free options for students and junior developers. Review common data structures, algorithms, and problem-solving techniques to improve your chances of success. For more traditional interviews you want to make sure you’re prepared to answer questions about yourself, your work, and the role. Practice your responses using Big Interview, or schedule an Interview Prep or Practice Interview appointment with the Career Center.

Time to Take the Next Step

As previously mentioned, one of the best ways to find a tech internship is by attending networking and hiring events. The Maryland Technology Internship Program 2025 Hiring Event is an excellent opportunity to connect with Maryland-based tech employers. There are also opportunities to meet with UMBC alumni in Data Science and Health Information Technology, as well as our Technology and Engineering Industry Fair as part of Career Month in April. Register now for these events to meet with professionals in tech and increase your chances of securing an internship. You got this!

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR METALS PRODUCTION & PROCESSING

 <Tagline>REMINDER: ME Seminar, Fri., 2/21/25, ENG 112, 2:30 p.m.</Tagline>

NOT-TO-BE-MISSED!

Dr. Toni Marechaux from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Energy, U.S. Department of Energy, will be visiting tomorrow to give a seminar. Please see abstract and biography below.

Abstract:

The concept of a circular economy is influencing more and more materials production and use. While the mining and processing of metals and minerals can be damaging to the environment, their inherent strength, durability, and corrosion properties clearly improve the performance and longevity of products in which they’re used. Metals are infinitely recyclable, with a high value that drives the recovery of such materials at the end of a product life cycle. Many companies are looking to new technologies to help eliminate waste (because any pollution is a product you're not selling!) and increase productivity and efficiency through sustainable processes. From designing products for high performance, durability, and recycling, optimizing the use of raw materials, and capturing and using waste streams, there are many new materials technologies of growing interest. Let's look at both the low-hanging fruit and the long-term research that will move this concept forward.

Bio:

Dr. Toni Marechaux is an accomplished technology strategist with extensive experience spanning basic research, technology development, management, and leadership. She currently serves as a lead analyst at the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Energy (ARPA-E) in the US Department of Energy and has worked previously for the Defense Science Board, ZIN Technologies, the National Academies of Sciences, the US Department of Energy, NASA, and the National Steel Company. Dr. Marechaux graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering and from Case Western Reserve University with a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering. She maintains an abiding interest in abolishing barriers to new technology applications and in engineering solutions for sustainable development.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
