Researcher of the Week: Dionne Cole

<Tagline>The Impact of Retriever Essentials on UMBC Students</Tagline>

Dionne Cole is a double major in Biological Sciences and Social Work who will graduate in May 2025.

Title of your project: Evaluating the Impact of Retriever Essentials on UMBC students

How did you find the research opportunity?

My mentor is Dr. Laura Ting from the School of Social Work. The semester before I applied for the URA, I took a class called Social Work Research with Dr. Ting where I fell in love with the concept of research in a social sciences setting and grew in curiosity about its application. I expressed my interest of doing research to Dr. Ting and she placed the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) on my radar, however I did not have a specific research topic until my involvement with Retriever Essentials. At Retriever Essentials I learned about the prevalence of food insecurity on college campuses. I became invested in examining Retriever Essentials impact on combating food insecurity at UMBC and decided to focus my research on that.

What was the hardest part about your research?

Prior to beginning research, I didn’t anticipate the variability in timeline for research. I thought I knew how much time it would take to get all the different steps done (such as proper training, getting all my materials together, IRB approval, etc…) but everything took longer than I expected. At first this was very frustrating for me due to my perfectionist tendencies, but thanks to my mentor and a friend in research, I have learned to embrace changes in my timeline and be flexible. In fact, I have found that things not going as planned gives me an opportunity to reassess and revaluate my methodology before I am too entrenched in the process.

What is the most rewarding part of your research, and how do you plan to disseminate it?

With every qualitative interview I conduct where a student shares with me their personal experience with Retriever Essentials or an idea they have to improve the program, I get excited because I anticipate that their contributions are going to have a profound impact on the provision of Retriever Essentials services and food insecurity at UMBC. Oddly enough, I am eager to get to the end because I want to see the fruit of my labor and everyone’s contributions. The plan is not just to present the findings at URCAD and to Retriever Essentials leaders but also, as a joint project with a friend who is conducting similar research on food insecurity, but also to UMBC administration. Our hope is to create lasting change in eliminating food insecurity at UMBC.

How does this research experience relate to your work in other classes?

Currently, I am taking a class called Medical Case Studies where I, along with my group members, integrate our knowledge of our respective disciplines to design and present our own novel case studies. Specifically, I am integrating my social work and public health knowledge surrounding the topic of food insecurity. Our case follows a middle-aged man who contracts a food borne illness due to living in a food desert. The end of the case uses the evaluative research I have conducted from Retriever Essentials to suggest sustainable practices and outlines the roles various levels of society can play in addressing food insecurity and eliminating food deserts.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

I think a good approach to beginning research is finding a topic that you are interested in or passionate about and then exploring undiscovered aspects, knowledge gaps, or potential research benefits for those connected to the topic. In my opinion, this initial approach is beneficial because it will foster a genuine interest in your research, increasing your commitment to its success. It also gives you an opportunity to not reinvent the wheel and explore new areas of research which could have significant implications.

Abstract:

Food insecurity is a socioeconomic condition of having limited or uncertain access to enough food. For college students, food insecurity can lead to poorer psychosocial and physical health, lower grade point average, and a higher dropout rate. UMBC’s Retrieval Essentials is a free food access program whose mission is to address college food insecurity by developing a comprehensive program of nutritional food resources for students who are experiencing food insecurity, such as a food pantry and the farmer’s market. Their hope is that by providing various food secure services, the academic retention and career success of UMBC students will improve. The research aims to understand the type and frequency of Retriever Essentials services being used by students and to learn how satisfied students are with the services, what additional needs students have, and any improvement that can be made to current services for these students. In hopes of enhancing the provision and planning of Retriever Essential services.

February is Black History Month: "African Americans and Labor"

<Tagline>Honoring and Celebrating Black History Month</Tagline>

Join The Mosaic as we continue to honor, celebrate, and uplift our Black and African American community. February marks Black History Month, but the impact of Black and African American history is recognized and celebrated every day. We acknowledge the profound contributions and influence of Black and African Americans that shape our nation's history, while also celebrating the culture, resilience, love, and service. We pay tribute to the ongoing representation, creativity, and artistic expression that enriches our communities.

The Association for the Study of African American Life and History declared that the 2025 Black History Month theme, is “African Americans and Labor”. “African Americans and Labor focuses on the various and profound ways that work and working of all kinds – free and unfree, skilled, and unskilled, vocational and voluntary – intersect with the collective experiences of Black people. Indeed, work is at the very center of much of Black history and culture.” (Association for the Study of African American Life and History)

For more information about ASALH 2025 Black History Month theme, click here.

Officially and nationally recognized as of 1976, Black History Month honors these great contributions while acknowledging all that has happened both past and present to the Black and African American community. The lives, culture, joy, and impact of Black history can be seen within all of our spaces and this celebration is not confined to only February but in special tribute. As a community that values and honors, “inclusive excellence”, we will continue to uplift the history and contributions of all Black and African Americans.

Throughout February, join our UMBC community in celebrating with events and programs.

Black Excellence Summit

Saturday, February 15, 2025

https://besummit.umbc.edu/

At UMBC, we believe in the importance of building community. UMBC’s community is especially appreciated for its diversity among the students, staff, and faculty. However, minority students, mostly those who are Black, often don’t feel a sense of community among those who share the same culture or racial identity as them. It’s time to change that. With America’s current political and social climate, it’s become increasingly important to make sure that our community is actively pursuing racial equity as well as cultivating an environment where Black students and staff feel heard, seen and comfortable. Furthermore, we want to redefine the idea of Black Excellence, so that it is more focused on the authenticity of the Black experience, rather than appealing to societal norms.

UMBC Black Student Union

Join UMBC’s BSU for their Black History Month programs.
The first chapter of her PhD Dissertation was published in the Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Journal, in January 2025. This paper, 'Modeling time scale of integration in equilibrium passive sampling', started as a simple modeling exercise. In the end, the team discovered the potential of this mathematical model to interpret 'time-integration' provided by Passive Samplers and its role as a helpful tool that can be used to strategize sampling practices for specific objectives.

Title:

Modeling time scale of integration in equilibrium passive sampling

Abstract:

Passive samplers (PSs) deployed in the field for several months provide a time-averaged measurement of the freely dissolved concentration of pollutants, which is important for assessing ecological exposure and estimating pollutant loads. A comprehensive theoretical modeling assessment of the sampling time scale of integration (TSI) of an equilibrium PS is required to correctly interpret the results. We address this knowledge gap by modeling exchange kinetics of polychlorinated biphenyl congeners in low-density polyethylene (PE) PS based on diffusive transport and first-order kinetics. We evaluate the sampling TSI by analyzing the response of the PS to simulated pulsed concentration increases in the water column that lasted for 1 day in a total sampling period of 90 days. More hydrophobic compounds experience slower transfer into the sampler and show a longer TSI compared with less hydrophobic compounds. Similarly, a thick sampler shows longer TSI than a thinner sampler. The sampling TSI for a typical 25.4 μm PE sheet ranged widely from 14–15 days for a dichlorobiphenyl to 43–45 days for a hexachlorobiphenyl. We show that strategic deployment of a thick and thin passive sampler can be used to narrow the range of TSIs for all congeners and used to simultaneously capture episodic events along with long-term averages.

This winter, Meredith Morse took part in UMBC’s Faculty-Led Study Abroad Program: Phage Hunters. This CBEE senior participated in the course Phage Hunters Genome Analysis at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain. Through this course, students were trained on how to identify unknown bacteriophages and how to annotate complete bacteriophage genome sequences through bacteriophage biology and genetics.

Meredith also participated in an internship with the IDEAS Mentorship Program at Universitat Pompeu Fabra where she conducted research with the Oxidative Stress and Cell Cycle Research Group. Through this lab, Meredith practiced many lab techniques including DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, and microscopy, to better understand the cell cycle in the fission yeast S. pombe.

Talk: Do LLMs Exhibit Cybersecurity Misconceptions? 1/31 online

<Tagline>Evaluation of LLMs on CCI and CCA examinations</Tagline>

Do LLMs Show Cybersecurity Misconceptions?

Evaluation of LLMs Performance on Cybersecurity Concept Inventories

Shan Huang, UIUC

Joint work with Jeffrey Herman and Alan Sherman, et al.

12:00–1pm ET Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, online

We evaluated the performance of five LLMs (Llama a, GPT-3.5-turbo, GPT-4, GPT-4O, and GPT-O1) on two cybersecurity concept inventories: Cybersecurity Concept Inventory (CCI) and Cybersecurity Curriculum Assessment (CCA). Using a zero-shot setting to minimize external influencing factors, we compared the performance of these LLMs with that of students previously studied, and we conducted a qualitative analysis of GPT-O1's output to examine if it exhibits misconceptions. Quantitative analysis reveals that, for the CCI and CCA, GPT-O1 significantly outperformed other models and students, correctly answering 92% of CCI and 72% of CCA test items. These results indicate GPT-O1’s strong proficiency in foundational topics (CCI) but reveal its limitations in addressing these concepts in more technically advanced scenarios (CCA). Qualitative analysis of GPT-O1’s reasoning patterns uncovered instances of insightful reasoning but also highlighted ways in which GPT-O1's answers reflect persistent student mistakes, such as biases, overgeneralizations, and logical inconsistencies. This work highlights the significant potential of GPT-O1 as a tool for introductory cybersecurity education in its ability to provide detailed explanations and structured reasoning for novice learners.

Shan Huang is a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She is broadly interested in how educational games can improve student learning. Current work includes improving student learning in cybersecurity with educational games and accessing student knowledge of cybersecurity concepts. Shan is also involved in various educational data mining projects.
