This event consist of workshops focused on topics such as medical school admissions and the Medical College Admission Test® (MCAT®) along with a career fair featuring over 75 medical schools from across the country. Representatives from other health professions also attend. Enjoy interactive discussions with current medical students to find out about their medical school experience, and participate in hands-on activities to test your skills!

Build your network and speak with top employers over FREE dinner at the Diversity Recruitment Event!

Whether or not you went to the UMBC Career Fair, it’s always a great idea to connect with employers and students not only to make connections and build your network, but to have a better grasp on your major and what you might want to do with it when you graduate. If you couldn’t make it to the job fair, there is another chance next week to make connections and get exceptional career advice from a career panel of various top employers. Next Thursday, November 5th at 5pm, the Career Center is hosting a Diversity Recruitment Dinner, which includes free (!) dinner, prizes, conversation and advice for students of ALL majors. I encourage students of all majors to partake in this event! Whether you’re a freshman or a senior, it’s never too late or too early to build your network with students and professionals that could potentially help you find career, internship, or research opportunities.

The dinner will include top employers who are interested in diversifying their workforce. You can check out the list of all of the employers registered to attend here.  You get the opportunity to discuss their organization’s mission as well as the career opportunities they’re offering. This is a great chance to make connections, so I highly recommend dressing professionally and bringing several copies of your resume. I recommend checking out our website here if you’d like some tips on what to wear to the event and how to interact with employers.

If you want to get your resume looked at before the event, or if you even want advice for speaking with employers, you should definitely come by the Career Center a day this week or next before the event. We have drop-in hours between 2-4pm Monday-Friday for a 15 minute appointment, but if you want a more detailed 30 minute appointment with a Career Advisor feel free to make an appointment. If you can’t make this event but still want to start thinking about building your network, I highly recommend checking out the Career Center’s calendar of Recruiting and Career events here to see when employers are coming on campus or when we are going to them! Every week we have representatives from companies come in to talk to students and give them more information about their organization’s mission and what they are hiring for. This calendar also includes workshops to give advice on building some professional skills, which can be a very helpful way of staying prepared when you do find the perfect network opportunity.

Graphical-model-based machine learning for neuroimaging data

Two important problem in neuroimaging data mining is high-dimensionality and temporal network modeling. Analyzing high-dimensional neuroimaging data is a very challenging problem. We developed an algorithms called Graphical-Model-based Multivariate Analysis (GAMMA) to model complex interactions among brain regions and a clinical variable. GAMMA has embedded dimension reduction and regularization mechanism. GAMMA has been used in distinguishing patients with mild cognitive impairment and normal elderly.

Identifying spatial-temporal interactions among brain regions from longitudinal structural magnetic-resonance images presents one of the major challenges in computational neuroanatomy. We developed a dynamic Bayesian network based method called structural dynamic network analysis (SDNA) to solve this problem. SDNA enables the detection of spatial-temporal interactions among brain regions, leading to dynamic network analysis. SDNA has been used to model trajectory changes in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Rong Chen is an Assistant Professor at in the department of Radiology the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Washington State University in 2003, and his MTR in Translational Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 2012. He published 45 peer-reviewed research articles in the areas of neuroimaging and data mining. His research interests include computational neuroscience, data mining, medical image analysis, and translational medicine.
