Capturing Brain Activity at Rest: Recent Development of Resting-State Functional MRI and Its Potential in Clinical Applications

Dr. Yihong Yang
Neuroimaging Research Branch
National Institute on Drug Abuse, NIH

12noon-1pm Friday, 2 Oct. 2015, ITE 102

There has been growing interest in the intrinsic brain activity at “rest” that may be used to reveal circuit-level information of brain functions. Alterations of resting-state brain activity have been implicated in various neurological and psychiatric disorders. In this seminar, the recent development of resting-state fMRI techniques will be introduced and discussed. Applications of these new imaging techniques in clinical applications such as cocaine addiction and traumatic brain injury will be demonstrated.

Dr. Yihong Yang received his Ph.D. in Biophysics, 1995, at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, under Paul C. Lauterbur who share 2003 Physiology or Medicine Nobel price with Peter Mansfield on the development of MRI. He is currently a senior investigator and the chief of MR Imaging and Spectroscopy Section at NIDA. Dr. Yang has made significant contributions to the development of MRI methodology and application of neuroimaging techniques to neurological and psychiatric disorders. He has published over 130 original research papers in leading journals and contributed several book chapters in the fields of functional MRI, diffusion tensor imaging and MR spectroscopy, as well as applications of MRI technology to the assessment of brain disorders, particularly in drug addiction. He has served on many NIH Study Sections and other research foundations including Medical Research Council (UK), Alzheimer’s Association, and National Science Foundation of China (NSFC). He is an editorial board member of the Brain Connectivity and Open Neuroimaging Journal. He has trained many post-doctoral and pre-postdoctoral fellows in neuroimaging.

2:00pm Friday 2 October 2015, PAHB 132

Scientists and technologists conducting research in creativity and engaging with artists face political pressure to justify their work. A case study of the NSF-funded Dance.Draw project is used to illustrate the problematic aspects of pressure. I argue that a shift in dialogue is needed to appropriately value this type of inter-disciplinary research.

Dr. Celine Latulipe is an Associate Professor in the Department of Software and Information Systems in the College of Computing and Informatics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Her research involves developing and evaluating novel interaction techniques, creativity and collaboration support tools and technologies to support the arts, and developing innovation computer science curriculum design patterns. Dr. Latulipe examines issues of how to support expression and exploration in complex interfaces and how interaction affordances impact satisficing behavior. She also conducts research into how to make computer science education a more social experience, both as a way of more deeply engaging students and as an approach to broadening participation in a field that lacks gender and racial diversity.

What You Need to Know About Marisela B. Gomez

As we count down to the Critical Social Justice: Baltimore 365 keynote event “Baltimore in Action: Always Rising” on Tuesday, October 20th, we’ll be profiling all of our keynote speakers in our “What You Need to Know” series.

Marisela B. Gomez, activist, public health professional, and author

Marisela B. Gomez is a community activist, author, public health professional, and physician scientist. She received a BS and MS from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, a PHD, MD, and MPH from the Johns Hopkins University. Of Afro-Latina ancestry, she has spent more than 20 years in Baltimore involved in social justice activism and community building/health research and practice.

Meet Marisela!

Some of her most notable work includes working on and leading the Save Middle East Action Committee which was created by residents living north of the Johns Hopkins Medical Center in an area called Middle East in response to learning the area would become the future site of a $1.8 billion redevelopment project known as the John Hopkins Biotech Park. Marisela was interestingly positioned in this battle as she was a resident of the area and a community member of the Johns Hopkins Medical Center. She would later go on to write a book about the organizing experience, the historical disinvestment of Middle East, and the ongoing consequences of race, economic, and institutional power inequities faced by marginalized communities.

“Supposed you learned about your community like they did, through The Sun [paper]?… You don’t stop big projects initiated by Johns Hopkins University. But you can slow it down, you can seek to change the dollar amount of those whose homes are to be used and you can still struggle for the right of re-entry. You can still fight to make sure the residents who are to be moved out can stay in the neighborhood.” †

Since 2004, she has been studying and practicing mindfulness and other forms of meditation around the world. Most recently, she’s been sharing her meditation practices with activists doing racial justice and social justice work through retreats and workshops with the Baltimore community.

An important read about the confrontation between the fragile and distressed Middle East neighborhood of Baltimore and the city’s most powerful institutions, including the closest neighborhood, Johns Hopkins Medical.

Much of the conversation about Baltimore — especially in the aftermath of the April uprisings — centers around West Baltimore while little attention from national and local media is given to the issues facing East Baltimore. The Critical Social Justice planning committee is excited to have Marisela join our keynote panel and give voice to the experiences of the East Baltimore community. Moreover, we are eager to learn ways in which we can add to our self-care toolkit and learn ways to combat burnout when engaging in important social and racial justice activist work.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship applications due Oct. 27

If you plan on applying to graduate school for next year or are currently a graduate student in your first or second year and are a US citizen or permanent-resident, you should consider applying to the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). This program makes approximately 2000 new fellowship awards each year.

The GRFP program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based Master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions. Fellows benefit from a three-year annual stipend of $32,000 along with a $12,000 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees, and opportunities for international research and professional development.

GRFP is the country’s oldest national fellowship program directly supporting graduate students in STEM fields. The hallmark features of the program are: 1) the award of fellowships to individuals on the basis of merit and potential, and 2) the freedom and flexibility provided to Fellows to define their own research and choose the accredited U.S. graduate institution that they will attend.

US citizens and permanent residents who are planning to enter graduate school in an NSF-supported discipline next fall, or in the first two years of such a graduate program, or who are returning to graduate school after being out for two or more years, are eligible. Applications for computing and engineering areas fields are due October 27. The applicant information page and the solicitation contain the necessary details.

Intern of the Week: Vivek Desai for Information Technology

<Tagline>Learn about Vivek's experience as an IT Programmer Analyst!</Tagline>

Name: Vivek Desai

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Laureate Education

Position Title: IT Programmer Analyst

Major(s)/Minor(s): Master's IT

Expected Graduation Year: 2015

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

This is my first IT job. I am lucky and proud to say that it got me the best learning experiences, incredible supporting colleagues, and coolest Mentor/Manager/Boss. During my last year at UMBC, I opted to do research/Master's thesis in the field of Data mining and collaborated my IT job with my academics. My Professor and Manager came together to decide the research topic which can be utilized in a product of Laureate Education. During my year at this internship, I wore multiple hats. I have worked as a salesforce administrator, project coordinator and programmer analyst. It is a great roller coaster ride to learn and explore new technologies.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I participated in every career fair that UMBC organized. At each fair, I walked around and did not skipping any encounter. I provided my resume and talked with employers face to face, and I was very specific and clear on what I am doing in my academics and what my interests are. It was a good practice for networking, and it was great to meet new employers all under one roof.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

They are very friendly, and the working environment is very professional. They provide a flexibility to work from home as well. All these advantages sum up to a positive outcome; it encourages you to work more effectively and be more productive.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I have used my knowledge of the salesforce to create a ticketing system to handle real-time customer facing issues. After I implemented my system, the issue storing process has become more efficient and effective. It saved a lot of time and reduced the waiting time for customers to get their problems resolved. Research work which I have done for my Master's thesis is actually a solution to a real-time problem statement/business requirement at Laureate Education.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Since her brother Tyrone West was murdered by Baltimore police on July 18th, 2013, Tawanda Jones has emerged as a leading voice in the movement to end police terror. Recently named Best Organizers in City Paper’s 2015 Best of Baltimore, the West family has led 113 consecutive West Wednesday demonstrations demanding justice for victims of police brutality.

In their tireless efforts to seek answers and accountability following Tyrone’s death, Tawanda and the West family have be credited with increasing local awareness of police violence and thereby setting the stage for the Baltimore Uprising after the murder of Freddie Gray.

I’m here to be the voice of the people that can’t speak, and that’s the victims of police murder. It’s not a ‘Tyrone thing.’ It’s a worldwide thing. ‡

          Collections. Projects that make
substantial onsite use of the Special Collections in any area ranging from the
photography collections to the biological sciences archives, and from the rare
books to the science fiction holdings are eligible for consideration by the
committee charged with judging the applications. Applicants must submit a project statement, a
writing sample, and a letter of recommendation for them and their project from a
          faculty mentor. The applications and
accompanying materials must be submitted to Chief Curator Tom Beck by November
12, 2015 for funding during the spring semester 2016.

Lois Kuhn Romeo, Chair of the Friends Council, said that the
group is delighted to offer support to student researchers in Special
          Collections. “UMBC is nationally
recognized as an innovator in undergraduate research, and the Friends wishes to
recognize talented students by giving them support in doing their research,”
Ms. Romeo remarked. Acting Director of
the Library & Gallery Joyce Tenney said: “The Special Collections have
excellent holdings and superb staff that will be pleased to give the Friends
award winners the benefit of their expertise.”
