The design of cryptographic protocols with well understood properties is a difficult problem. Many simple cryptographic protocols that have been designed over the years by experienced designers have been found to have subtle flaws or incorrect assumptions that have led to attacks against them. Much effort has gone into the development of theories, techniques and tools to formally analysis the security properties of cryptographic protocols in an attempt to identify and eliminate such security flaws. This talk will address basic paradigms used in the analysis and verification of the security properties of cryptographic protocols, discuss efforts to develop tools to assist designers in developing protocols with verifiable security properties and demonstrate one such tool, the Cryptographic Protocol Shapes Analyzer (CPSA), available at https://hackage.haskell.org/package/cpsa.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I found my internship myself-- I had met my former delegate last year working as a House page and she offered me an internship. Then, when she became a judge, I sent my resume and a cover letter to my current delegate and chief of staff, who coordinated with each other and decided to hire me.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I have loved everything about it! My favorite part is getting to work closely next to such kind and influential people, and seeing how they get things accomplished like passing legislation or working with someone of the opposite party on an issue.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another opportunity ?

I have learned a lot about presenting myself well and public image-- it is entirely too important to be careful about how you present yourself both in person and on social media!

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would say that they should always go for it--put yourself out there! The worst that can happen is that someone could tell you no, and that is not half as bad as knowing you could have gotten an amazing internship with fantastic people.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / the internship placement process.

I liked working with the Career Center and learning more about the process. Kacie Lawrence is awesome and really helpful!

Like this story on Facebook or FAV/RT on Twitter!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?
Career Center is Hiring!

<Tagline>Susanna Campbell, Career Peer Liaison for CNMS</Tagline>

For the most recent school year, I have been a Career Peer Advisor at the Career Center. You may have read some of my blog posts, attended some of the presentations I hosted, or seen me at some of the Career Center events. I have loved the job for many reasons.

I have helped students, learned valuable professional development skills, and made great connections for the future. The Career Center staff is very supportive to me and my co-workers. As I applied for graduate school, the Career Center staff helped me prepare my applications and prepped me for my interviews. I learned dining and career fair etiquette, how to write a professional email, and I learned about the many career options I have as a biology student.

I am graduating so the Career Center is now hiring new Career Peers for the upcoming semesters. If you are looking for a job that will benefit your professional skills and will provide the opportunity to help students, then I recommend that you apply to be a Career Peer Advisor.

As a Career Peer Advisor, you will be scheduled to work 10 – 12 hours a week. You must be available during drop-in hours (2pm – 4pm) to assist students. You will also be trained to help students with resumes, CVs, and cover letters in late August.

To be a Career Peer, you will need good communication skills, interpersonal skills, an interest in helping students, some basic computer knowledge, be currently enrolled at UMBC, and have a 2.75 GPA. It is helpful to have public speaking experience and prior office experience. However, you will also be trained to improve public speaking.

The Career Center is hiring three Career Peer Advisors for the Fall 2015 – Spring 2016 school year. The Career Center is looking for a student from each college (Engineering and Information Technology, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Natural and Mathematical Sciences).

If you have any additional questions you may ask me, or Diane Crump-Fogle (crump@umbc.edu,
410-455-3907), who oversees the Career Peer program and supervises the Career Peers.
