Fraudulent Jobs & Email Scams

<Tagline>What You Need To Know - Now More Than Ever</Tagline>

The Career Center works very hard to ensure that job postings in Handshake are legitimate. However, scammers are becoming more and more creative, especially through direct offer emails.

The Career Center is here to support you. If you encounter a position that you fear may be fraudulent, don’t hesitate to reach out to us careers@umbc.edu

Below we provide some helpful information to assist you with spotting scams before engaging with them.

Look at the email domain of the sender (john@gmail vs. john@avalidcompany) Be CAUTIOUS if the domain does not match the domain of the company. Emails from UMBC will always come from a UMBC email address.

NEVER provide your credit card, bank account numbers, social security number or other financial documentation.

BE CAUTIOUS of an employer offering a check before work has commenced and NEVER deposit a check before work has commenced. This is almost always a scam.

NEVER engage with an employer that requires an initial investment, such as a payment by wire.

BE CAUTIOUS of an employer whose posting includes many spelling and grammatical errors.

BE CAUTIOUS of an employer who asks for anything out of the ordinary such as a picture of you or who is not operating by normal hiring procedures, such as hiring you without interviewing you.

Google the employer’s phone number, fax number and/or email address. If it does not appear connected to an actual business organization, this is a red flag. Better Business Bureau (http://www.bbb.org/us/consumers/), Hoovers (http://www.hoovers.com/) and AT&T’s Anywho (http://www.anywho.com/) can be used to verify organizations.

Scammers often use phishing emails. Some key things to note are:

The FROM address on an email can easily be spoofed/faked. Just because an email you receive looks like it came from an “@umbc.edu” address or someone you know, does not always mean it actually came from that person.

Some people may ask,“How does a scammer get my UMBC email address in the first place?”Your email address is not private information. If someone knows your name, they can look up your UMBC email address in the campus directory, or if you have your email address attached to social media or other online accounts and those get hacked, or if someone you know has had their email hacked, etc. There are many different ways your email address can end up in the hands of a scammer.

Never click on the links in a phishing message. Just by clicking on the link, you may download a malicious program onto your computer.

For more information from DoIT on phishing, click HERE.

Please see the information and recommendations from DoIT at UMBC about online safety and best practices HERE.

If you feel that you have already been scammed, there are important steps you should take.

If you have already given your personal information, you should follow DoIT's recommendations. You may want to alert the campus police about your particular concerns.

***In order to assist the DoIT Security Team's investigation, recipients of the email should send security@umbc.edu a notification including the full header set of the message. These headers are not normally displayed but can be easily accessed. For more instruction on how to send the full header set of the message, please refer to: https://wiki.umbc.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=1867970

If you have already fallen victim to this scam and transferred funds to someone, please file a complaint with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center. They can be reached at the following web address: Internet Crime Complaint Center

If you have not wired money to the criminals, please stop communicating with them. You should still report the situation to the campus police and follow DoIT’s instructions. There is no need to report it to the FBI.

*You will continue to receive scam emails periodically from all types of sources. Please refer to Page 65 of the Career Guide - "Is this Posting for Real?". HERE is a link to that page.
Researcher of the Week: Emmanuella Osei

  <Tagline>Investigating food insecurity at UMBC</Tagline>

I am a junior pursuing a dual degree in Public Health, and Sociology. I am a member of the Honors College, a Sondheim Scholar, a McNair Scholar, and a Jack Kent Cook Scholar.

Title of your research project: Food Insecurity among College Students at a Minority Serving Institution

Describe your project:

I developed a study to investigate food insecurity at UMBC and to understand student experiences and perceptions of ways to combat this issue. After gathering over 500 responses, I am currently analyzing the data in preparation to share my findings with UMBC administration and Retriever Essentials.

Who is your mentor(s) for your project?

I began this project in the fall of 2023 through the McNair Scholars Program and chose Dr. Sameera Nayak from the Public Health department as my mentor. I selected her because I knew she would be exceptionally helpful in guiding me through the research process. Additionally, she has expertise in researching topics related to the social determinants of health. Dr. Nayak has been incredibly supportive and continues to provide invaluable assistance.

How did you become interested in this project?

During the summer after my first year at UMBC, I interned at a nonprofit in my local community named Columbia Community Care. My work included managing the food pantry and deepening my understanding of food insecurity in Howard County. When I returned to school for my sophomore year, I was interested in exploring this issue on my college campus and generating data that could be used to address it.

What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?

There have been challenges at every stage of my research journey, which is completely normal. As I’m currently in the data analysis phase, some of the difficulties I’ve faced include learning to use programming software that I wasn’t previously familiar with. I also didn’t anticipate how time-consuming the research process can be.

What has been the most rewarding part?

The most rewarding part has been connecting with others who share similar research interests and meeting individuals who have provided valuable insights for my study. I am also very grateful for the perspectives students shared in my survey and the solutions they proposed.

How will you disseminate your research?

I plan to present my results to the UMBC administration, the Retriever Essentials staff, the broader UMBC community at URCAD, and at future conferences outside of UMBC.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Talk to your professors whose research interests you and ask if they have opportunities for you to join their lab. You can also design your own research project, like I did, and find a professor who can support you through it. Lastly, I recommend applying for and participating in summer research opportunities outside of UMBC to broaden your network!

Be featured as a UMBC Undergraduate Researcher of the Week!

Diwali in North India and Deepavali in South India are both major festivals celebrating the victory of light over darkness with their own distinct regional customs and traditions. In North India, Diwali is primarily linked to the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. This grand celebration includes fireworks, decorating homes with oil lamps (diyas), and worshiping Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity.

In South India, Deepavali is often associated with the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura, symbolizing the victory of truth and righteousness. The celebrations in the South focus on early morning oil baths, temple visits, and lighting lamps. Both festivals share the common themes of joy, family gatherings, and the removal of darkness.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Derivative profiling is a novel approach to identify differential signals from dynamic omics data sets. This approach applies variable step-size differentiation to time dynamic omics data. This work assumes that there is a general omics derivative that is a useful and descriptive feature of dynamic omics experiments. We assert that this omics derivative, or omics flux, is a valuable descriptor that can be used instead of, or with, fold change calculations.

Results

The results of derivative profiling are compared to established methods such as Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines, significance versus fold change analysis (Volcano), and an adjusted ratio over intensity (M/A) analysis to find that there is a statistically significant similarity between the results. This comparison is repeated for transcriptomic and phosphoproteomic expression profiles previously characterized in Aspergillus nidulans. This method has been packaged in an open-source, GUI-based MATLAB app, the Derivative Profiling omics Package (DPoP). Gene Ontology (GO) term enrichment has been included in the app so that a user can automatically/programmatically describe the over/under-represented GO terms in the derivative profiling results using domain specific knowledge found in their organism’s specific GO database file. The advantage of the DPoP analysis is that it is computationally inexpensive, it does not require fold change calculations, it describes both instantaneous as well as overall behavior, and it achieves statistical confidence with signal trajectories of a single bio-replicate over four or more points.

Conclusions

While we apply this method to time dynamic transcriptomic and phosphoproteomic datasets, it is a numerically generalizable technique that can be applied to any organism and any field interested in time series data analysis. The app described in this work enables omics researchers with no computer science background to apply derivative profiling to their data sets, while also allowing multidisciplined users to build on the nascent idea of profiling derivatives in omics.
