ABSTRACT:

Transition metal oxide cathodes are widely used in commercial Li-ion batteries. However, their practical charge capacity is limited due to severe chemo-mechanical instabilities at higher charge voltage, and state-of-charge condition. Here, in situ stress and strain measurements were synchronized to probe mechanical deformations on the lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) cathode via a multi-beam stress sensor and digital image correlation, respectively. In situ mechanical measurements revealed how Li removal from the electrode structure induces deformations on the LCO cathodes during cycling. The structure and morphology of the LCO cathodes were further investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies. Two distinct electrochemical and mechanical behaviors were identified when the LCO was charged up to 4.65 V. The LCO undergoes a compressive stress generation when charged up to 4.2 V and surface fractures on the LCO particles were detected by SEM. LCO cathode experienced significantly large contractions (negative strains) when charged up to 4.65 V, where intergranular crack formation and phase transformation were detected on the LCO particles via SEM and XRD, respectively. Overall, the study bridges complicated structural deformations with in situ analysis of mechanical degradations in LCO cathodes charged at higher voltages. The correlation is vital to understanding instability mechanisms in transition metal oxides at high voltages for alkali metal ion batteries.

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
During my time in the Pediatric Feeding Disorders Unit, I collaborated with a multidisciplinary clinical team to oversee the care of four pediatric patients, managing their progress from admission to discharge over the eight-week program. My main role included recording data during meal sessions, tracking up to 15+ variables at once using BData Pro software. I then entered and analyzed data into Excel sheets and graphs, collaborating with supervisors to refine individualized treatment plans based on patient progress. I also had supervised meetings with psychologists two to three times per week to apply creative problem-solving strategies to address feeding challenges, enhancing patient engagement and outcomes for up to three children daily during therapeutic meal sessions.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
After struggling to find a summer internship, I reached out to my advisor for extra help. She recommended a small list of internships to her students. After reading through the list, I directly contacted the Pediatric Feeding Disorders Unit at the Kennedy Krieger Institute with my resume, cover letter, and additional information about myself. I heard back within the same week about scheduling an interview!

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
UMBC Career Center, Faculty Connections

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
What I enjoyed most about my position at the Kennedy Krieger Institute was the opportunity to work directly with children and adolescents facing unique challenges. Being part of their treatment process and witnessing their progress was incredibly fulfilling. I also appreciated the collaborative environment, where I gained different perspectives on patient care and received invaluable mentorship from the professionals in the Pediatric Feeding Disorders Unit.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I believe I made an impact in the Pediatric Feeding Disorders Unit by contributing to the care and treatment of children and adolescents with feeding disorders. My role in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data during meal sessions supported the creation of individualized treatment plans, which were crucial to each patient’s progress. Additionally, my efforts in reinforcing behavioral strategies during treatment sessions helped patients overcome their challenges and achieve important milestones in therapy.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
My advice to another student would be to step outside of your comfort zone. You may discover a new area of interest or develop new skills. Sometimes the most rewarding experiences come from positions that challenge your expectations. Also, don't hesitate to reach out to UMBC faculty for guidance! Advisors, professors, and the Career Center are all great resources for finding opportunities and preparing for the application process.

Why We Need More Diversity in Our Workplaces

<Tagline>How diverse perspectives at work lead to better outcomes.</Tagline>

Despite what you might read
in the news or on social media, diversity is more than just a buzzword when it
comes to the workplace. It can actually help companies build innovation,
profitability, and employee satisfaction. Here are a few ways that diversity in
the workplace can create positive, lasting impact.

Builds Creativity. When organizations bring together employees from different cultural and
experiential backgrounds, generating creative solutions can come more easily.
Employees are more likely to question the status quo and think outside of the
box to tackle complex problems. They take more novel approaches to the work
that they do, causing the company to overall be more adaptable.

Fosters Innovation. Diverse teams bring broader perspectives and foster innovation. By challenging
conventional thinking, companies can now make decisions that positively impact
the bottom line. According to a McKinsey report (1), companies in the top
quartile for gender and racial diversity are more likely to have financial
returns above their respective national industry medians. Additionally, a BCG
study (2) highlighted that organizations with more diverse management teams
have a 19% higher revenue from innovation compared to companies with
    below-average diversity.

Causes Work Satisfaction. Other than financial benefits, diversity promotes a
more inclusive and respectful workplace culture, which increases employee
engagement and retention. People feel valued when their unique perspectives are
welcomed, a consideration that recent grads do not take lightly, nor should
they. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE),
equity and inclusion is a career readiness competency that employers should
seek to promote open-mindedness, flexibility, and adaptability in the workplace
in order to recruit top talent (3).

Represents Customer Base. Lastly, having a more diverse workforce better
reflects the global customer base companies serve. As businesses operate in
increasingly international markets, the ability to meet diverse consumer needs
becomes crucial to ensure success. Additionally, companies that embrace
diversity and reflect a diverse workforce are seen as more relatable and
inclusive by global customers, opening the door for lucrative relationship
    building opportunities and partnerships.

Increasing workplace
diversity isn’t just the right thing to do — it’s a strategic imperative for
companies hoping to hire and retain the best employees. What that said, students
should strongly consider a diverse organization for their next internship or
job to experience the benefits firsthand.

If you want to get a head
start, join us for our Diversity Recruitment Event on Thursday, October 17th from 5-8 PM at
the University Center Ballroom. This is open to ALL students. Enjoy a free
dinner, network with top organizations, and hear from UMBC alum Bobby Allen ’99
