We have seen a tremendous surge of interest in enterprises for generative AI applications – from chatbots and summarization to agents and multi-modal apps. Yet most of these apps remain in the prototype and experimentational stage. To move apps into production and keep them there, it is critical to make them efficient and to address common failure modes – hallucinations, retrieval failures, safety issues such as toxicity and bias and more, all while providing robust governance.

In this talk, we will share learnings from building and maintaining production-grade apps. Using two concrete examples – Cortex Search (which incorporates hybrid search to power question-answering over unstructured data) and Cortex Analyst (which enables business users to talk to their structured data with SOTA accuracy) – we will examine key design patterns to build efficient and trusted generative AI apps. Building on TruLens, our open source project, we will also present a methodology for evaluating, experimenting, and monitoring generative AI apps that enables developers to measure app quality, identify and debug failure modes, and build the trust that’s needed to move apps into production and keep them there. Specifically, we will discuss evaluation methodologies based on the RAG Triad -- context relevance, groundedness, and answer relevance -- that can surface flaws in LLM apps and guide iteration to improve them. We will also show how this can be done practically using our open source framework, TruLens, leveraging both LLMs-as-a-judge and smaller, custom models that scale better to production monitoring workloads.

Anupam Datta is Co-Head of Snowflake AI Research. He joined Snowflake as part of the acquisition of TruEra where he served as Co-Founder, President, and Chief Scientist from 2019-2024. Datta was on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University from 2007-2022, most recently as a tenured Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science. Datta's current research focuses on Trustworthy AI and includes pioneering work on evaluation, explainability, fairness, and adversarial robustness of ML models and GenAI applications. His research has also had significant product impact at TruEra and Snowflake. Datta served as Chair of the National Academies Workshop on Assessing and Improving AI Trustworthiness, on the Steering Committee of of the ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency, and the IEEE Computer Security Foundations Symposium, and as an Editor-in-Chief of Foundations and Trends in Privacy and Security. He obtained a B.Tech. from IIT Kharagpur, and Ph.D. and M.S. degrees from Stanford University, all in Computer Science.

Is Grad School for Me?

<Tagline>Here are a few things to ask yourself before applying.</Tagline>

Deciding whether to attend
graduate school can be a significant, life-altering step that requires a lot of
research and thoughtful consideration. Grad school offers an opportunity to
deepen expertise in an area of interest, conduct specialized research, enter
the world of academia, or gain professional qualifications, but it’s not always
a necessary step based on your career goals.

Here are a few things to keep
in mind as you weigh your options:

Ask if you need it. Figure out if a graduate degree is absolutely
necessary for your desired career. Keep in mind the time, money, and energetic
commitment it would take to complete your degree, and consider the return on
your investment (ROI). Would going to grad school increase your job options?
Speed up the promotion timeline? Increase your starting salary? These
considerations can be industry dependent. Do your research and decide if grad
school provides these benefits and more.

Consider your motivations. Are you passionate about a particular subject or career
path that requires advanced education? For example, fields like law, medicine,
and academia often require a graduate or professional degree. But even if the
degree is not required for your desired career, you may still benefit from the
added skills, networking opportunities, and specialized knowledge that a graduate
program could offer. Think through the “why” behind your interest in graduate
school and determine if it makes sense to go through the process based on what
    you’ve gathered.

Evaluate the commitment. Graduate school often involves years of rigorous
study and research — it’s not an easy process, even for the most prepared and
enthusiastic. You’ll also need to assess the financial and personal
implications, such as tuition costs, possible time away from the workforce, and
potential debt. A gap year or work experience might help you decide whether
you're ready to make this commitment before you fully dive in, though it can be
harder to return to school after being away for a while. Figure out the timing
and decide whether you’re ready to make the commitment, both financially and
    energetically.

Do your research. Review the types of graduate degrees relevant to your
field, whether it’s a master’s, Ph.D., or professional degree. Each option has
different expectations and outcomes, so aligning your goals with the right
program is key. Think about where you hope to land when it comes to your career
and determine the type of program that will best help you get there. Then,
explore the requirements for the programs you’re interested in and see whether
you can meet those requirements by the application deadline. The timeline that we provide on our website can be a helpful tool to figure out your specific timing. Please note, however, that if you’re planning on applying to medical school in particular the timeline could vary.

Ultimately, grad school can
be a highly rewarding experience, but it should align with both your career
ambitions and personal readiness for it to be worthwhile. Hopefully these tips
will help with your decision making, but if you need more information join us
at our Grad School 101 Event at the Skylight Room in the Commons from 4:45-7:00
    PM.

Abstract:

Although online monitoring of dissolved O2, pH, and dissolved CO2 is critical in bioprocesses, nearly all existing technologies require some level of direct contact with the cell culture environment, posing risks of contamination. This study addresses the need for an accurate, and completely noninvasive technique for simultaneous measurement of these analytes. A “non-contact” technique for simultaneous monitoring of dissolved O2, pH, and dissolved CO2 was developed. Instead of direct contact with the culture media, the measurements were made through permeable membranes via either a sampling port in the culture vessel wall or a flow cell. The efficacy of the “non-contact” technique was validated in Escherichia coli (E.coli), Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) culture processes, and dynamic environments created by sparging gases in cell culture medium. The measurements obtained through the developed techniques were comparable to those obtained through control methods. The noninvasive monitoring system can offer accurate, and contamination-minimized monitoring of critical process parameters including dissolved O2, pH, and dissolved CO2. These advancements will enhance the control and optimization of cell culture processes, promising improved cell culture performance.
