Alternative Ways to Gain Experience

<Tagline>Believe it or not, internships aren't the only answer.</Tagline>

In a job market that feels inundated with candidates, you
may feel completely overwhelmed trying to find ways to stand out among your
competitors. This can be especially true if you’re starting out in your career
and are trying to find ways to add experiences to your resume.

It feels like an endless cycle. You need experiences...to add
experiences to your resume...but without experiences...it’s difficult to get
experiences in the first place. Internship opportunities fill up quickly within
a seemingly narrow window of time.

In other words, how in the world do you get the visibility
you need to land that first internship?

Here’s the truth: pursuing and securing an internship can
feel like chasing a purple unicorn.

But here’s a secret: there are actually other ways to
          acquire career-related experience.

Here are a few to help you get started:

Course Projects – Students are often surprised to find that their
course projects count as experience, but they most certainly do! By listing out
the class and details of what you did to complete an assignment, as well as the
impact of your work, this demonstrates a level of knowledge and expertise that
could be considered just as valuable as an internship experience.

          On-Campus Employment – If
you find yourself on campus often, getting a job with a campus department could
be a viable option. You get bonus points if it’s relevant to your major or
career of interest. For more information on how to snag an on-campus position, check out our post
          here.

          Volunteer – Helping out a
local non-profit, community organization, or student organization is another great way to gain
experience. You could even tie the work to something related to your major, for
example, running social media if you're a Media & Communication Studies major. For even
          more tips, check
          out our post here.

Professional Associations – By connecting with professionals in your
industry of interest through professional associations, you’ll not only build
your network but also open yourself up to potential opportunities through their
organizations or even the association itself. This option does require
networking, which can be a source of anxiety for students, but it helps
exercise that muscle that will absolutely be needed for the actual job market.

          Micro-internships – Micro-internships are a final great option if you’re
still searching for semester-long work and need more experience. Go to parkerdewey.com to find available
projects. You can also look into theforage.com
to gain experience through their job simulations.

Want to know more ways you can stand out as a leading
candidate outside of internships? Join us for a Keys to Success
workshop on Monday, October 7 at 12 PM at The Commons 331 to learn
          how.

Much of our lives are digitized and recorded by centralized entities. The economic incentives to exploit these data and the massive data breaches facilitated by centralization, continue to result in privacy violations of unprecedented scale. To protect consumers, some platforms promise end-to-end encryption to limit access to message content, but most of the value comes from metadata—the who, what, when, where, and how details of any message or activity.

Anonymity systems promise greater protection for these metadata, but few exist in production and their user bases are small. In this talk, we discuss xx network’s privacy-protecting communication layer that is powered by a decentralized implementation of cMix, a mixnet protocol for anonymous communications. This platform was deployed almost three years ago and features over 370 nodes performing continuous mix operations at scale. We will provide an overview of the architecture of the platform, how it differs from the original cMix paper, the challenges involved, and a walkthrough of the entire xx development kit (xxDK) stack, including a live demonstration.

Richard is a UMBC Alumnus (CS PhD, 2010) in cryptography and computer security who has built a SaaS CVE scanner, novel crypto messaging platforms, election systems, and embedded security tools. In his previous role, Dr. Carback cofounded Lexumo, which spun out of the embedded systems security group he led at Charles Stark Draper Laboratories.

Semester of Internship:Summer 2024

Major:Mathematics

Current Class Level:Senior

This semester I completed a(n)...:Internship

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization Name):Morgan Stanley

Location of the Organization (City, State):Baltimore, MD

Title of position:Non-Financial Risk Analyst

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

During my internship, I worked on the Strategic Product Management Team, supporting scenario analysis and coverage. I acquired knowledge in Agile Project Management by assisting the Product Owner in leading a team of Software Developers, Quality Assurance Testers, and Analysts. Additionally, I had the opportunity to lead stakeholder meetings with international members (from London, Budapest, Mumbai, etc.) to guide the team in redesigning and documenting an improved workflow for the global scenario analysis program.

Some of the skills I gained include backlog management, UI/UX design, process management, data management, stakeholder management, and requirements gathering. I also conducted more than 20 interviews and created a SharePoint database for a program-long non-financial risk technology inventory project, which was shared firm-wide. We presented our findings to Executive Directors and senior management.

My day-to-day responsibilities involved joining meetings (both virtual and in-person) and networking with employees. I used a variety of tools, including Excel for writing user stories, PowerPoint for creating presentations and creating new workshop workflows, and JIRA for project management tasks. I also used ServiceNow to grant employee entitlements.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?:

I obtained my position by applying to the program online through Morgan Stanley's website. I applied on July 25, 2023. I sent my resume, and soon afterward, I was contacted through email for the next steps. The first step involved a phone call where I was asked questions. This call was intended to make sure I was prepared to move on to the next stage. Then, the next step was an in-person interview day, which was called "Superday." During this day, I had multiple interviews, each one with a different person, and a group project with other interviewees.

About two weeks after this process, I received a phone call from the recruiter in the morning, and they told me that I had been accepted for the position. I was officially extended an offer on November 15, 2023, and this was when I logged onto the online portal and accepted it there.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?:

Handshake

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?:

I enjoyed having the opportunity to get in-depth experience working at a large financial company. I enjoyed making connections with other employees the most. The process of networking and working with my manager and team was an exciting aspect.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?:

I believe I made an impact by contributing significantly to the team. I helped my manager redesign the entire new workflow for the scenario analysis program we were working on, and the team will continue to use my work. Additionally, the NFR Technology Inventory project I made with a group of other interns was shared with the Legal and Compliance Division in Baltimore, so employees will continue to use that.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?:

I would advise another student to focus on developing skills that show they are taking initiative. Creating your own projects, your own club, or another original idea will greatly enhance your resume. Focus on diversifying your skills while maintaining high grades and other commitments.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.:

I enjoyed working with my team the most and establishing a connection with my manager and mentors. The Career Center helped me prepare and adjust my resume before applying to the position.

When did you do your Research?

Summer 2024

Where was your Research?

Rutgers University, RISE Program: Cellular Bioengineering REU (www.rise.rutgers.edu/)

What is the focus of your Research?

Investigating optimal chronic wound healing environments through measuring oxygen consumption.

What are you looking forward to the most about your Research?

When first starting the research internship, I was excited to gain experience in a wet lab and a better understanding of graduate student life.

What was the best part of your Research OR What was the biggest learning moment of your Research ?

The biggest lesson I learned was the importance of continually asking questions! I was the only undergraduate in the lab. It could be intimidating at times, however I used it as an opportunity to learn from people with much more experience than me. I was inspired by the passion my mentor had for his research. He constantly encouraged me to think of new approaches for my own project. The friendships formed with my REU cohort in the BME department broadened my perspective, exposing me to various research techniques, studies, and research environments across the country.

What advice do you have for students who are interested in getting involved in research or an internship?

Embrace every opportunity that comes your way! Never underestimate your resume or abilities—you might be exactly what a lab, company, or school is searching for.

Are you a member of any clubs/campus organizations?

Event Coordinator for Society of Women Engineers, Member of the National Society of Black Engineers, College of Engineering and Informational Technology Peer Navigator

What are your goals after graduation?
After graduating, I hope to pursue a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering.

Measuring Oxygen Consumption to Understand Optimal Chronic Wound Healing Environments

Chronic wounds affect 6.5 million people across the United States, altering lifestyles and immobilizing patients. Adequate healing conditions for chronic wounds involve proper access to oxygen and nutrients, and since these quantities differ between wounds, we seek to quantify the extracellular oxygen consumption rate of wound cells to form conclusions about healing. To understand wound cell metabolism in the context of chronic wounds, we cultured immortalized human keratinocytes (HaCaT) in multi-well plates to mimic epidermal healing in a controlled environment. We developed a system to simulate wounds with differing oxygen levels and manipulate the environment easily and at a low cost. We hypothesize greater rates of oxygen consumption will correlate to faster chronic wound healing because oxygen is vital to cell proliferation and migration. Utilizing an extracellular oxygen sensitive dye allowed us to monitor the oxygen consumption of the HaCaT cells in the well. We standardized the method, confirming that fluorescence intensity increases with decreasing oxygen concentration. Then we plated HaCaT cells to confluence and multiple different treatments were added to the media. We observed changes in fluorescence as a function time over a two hour period. After validating these tools to manipulate oxygen uptake, my lab will perform a scratch assay and image cell closure over time with different conditions, such as the addition of drugs, amino acids, or using cell culture media with differing oxygen exposures. The assay would correlate oxygen uptake rate by the cells with the rate of healing in the wells. We also expect that chronic wounds will heal faster when in high-oxygen environments. The assay platform developed in this project will allow testing different compounds that improve cellular metabolism and wound healing rate, which will support the development of innovative treatments for people with chronic wounds worldwide.

Biography: Maya Schreiber is a motivated rising sophomore attending University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), originally from Ridley Park, Pennsylvania. Maya is majoring in chemical engineering with a biotechnology and bioengineering focus, aiming to deepen her knowledge in pharmaceutical sciences.
