Grad Student & Postdoc Development Group is pleased to announce the launch of the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Microcredential Series - a set of in-person workshops this fall.

While we will still offer virtual RCR training in CITI, these new in-person discussion-based workshops are required for any individual receiving funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including undergraduate students, graduate students, staff, postdocs, and faculty (see NIH guidance here). In order to meet NIH’s requirements for in-person RCR training, we have established these workshops as a series of microcredentials (also called “badges”) that lead to an overarching RCR “mega”credential. It should be noted that UMBC requires all graduate students completing a master's thesis or doctoral degree, along with all postdoctoral research associates, to complete RCR training through either CITI or the new in-person RCR Microcredential Series.

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

During my internship at T. Rowe Price's Owings Mills branch as a Global Account Services intern, I had an exciting and hands-on experience in the Client Account Services division. My daily tasks included transferring substantial sums of money—sometimes up to $15 million—between various accounts and firms. We had numerous training and practice sessions to ensure accuracy and efficiency in these transfers. Alongside these responsibilities, I worked on three major projects, including a career progression initiative where I interviewed over 50 senior professionals and honed my skills with tools like Excel and PowerPoint. This project is now being used by the department as a job aid for both internal and external users and serves as a presentation tool for our project manager.

One of the highlights was the incredible networking opportunities. I connected with over 100 people across the firm, learning from their diverse experiences. The internship also offered fantastic extracurricular activities, with my favorite being a women's networking breakfast where I engaged with inspiring women from different departments. The culture at T. Rowe Price was vibrant and diverse, making every day an exciting and rewarding experience!

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?:

I first learned about the position at T. Rowe Price during the UMBC career fair, where I engaged with representatives from the firm and explored their various finance opportunities. Intrigued by what I learned, I decided to apply through their online application, which consisted of three different parts. I submitted my application in mid-September. After successfully passing the application stage, I had a one-on-one interview with HR. Upon passing that, I was invited to a Superday interview, where I spent an entire day in back-to-back interviews with various professionals from different groups within T. Rowe Price. After successfully navigating this process, I received an offer to join the firm for a summer internship!

What resources did you use to find your current experience?:

Career Fairs, Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.)

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?:

I've thoroughly enjoyed the passion for culture and diversity that T. Rowe Price promotes. The firm's culture, affectionately known as "T Rowe Nice," truly lives up to its name. It's incredibly easy to connect with and learn from anyone at the company, as everyone is eager to work with those who are curious and willing to learn. The array of activities outside of work is impressive, catering to a wide variety of interests. I joined a group focused on community service and volunteering, which led to one of my most rewarding experiences. We spent a day at a nonprofit second-hand store on the edge of Baltimore, where we sorted and organized stock for a few hours. It was a fulfilling and organic experience, working alongside people who share the same values and dedication to helping those in need.

What really stood out to me was how T. Rowe Price treated us as full-fledged employees rather than typical interns. For three months, they entrusted us with impactful and lasting projects and provided us with training and experiences that are usually reserved for full-time staff. We were actively involved in significant tasks, such as transferring funds and interacting with intermediary clients, which gave us a real sense of responsibility and a deep understanding of the business.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?:

I believe I've made an impact through my work and projects because what I worked on has become integral tools within the department. One of my projects is now being used as a job aid on the training website, accessible to all T. Rowe Price employees, which to me is clear evidence that my contributions are valued, lasting, and impactful! Additionally, my former manager continues to use this project as a presentation tool, further highlighting its importance and the trust they placed in my work!

Moreover, the collaborative nature of some projects, where I partnered with full-time employees, reinforced my belief that I was making a difference. Being treated as an integral part of the team and knowing that my work was contributing directly to the success of ongoing projects, rather than being just an intern assignment, assured me that my efforts were meaningful and impactful. The tangible results and continued use of my work within the company are how I know I've made a lasting impact!

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?:

My advice to another student seeking an internship or similar experience is to start early and be proactive in your search. Take advantage of resources like your school's Career Center, which can provide guidance, interview preparation, and connections to potential employers. When applying, tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight relevant skills and experiences that align with the position you're targeting. During the internship, don't be afraid to ask questions, seek feedback, and take on additional responsibilities—this shows your eagerness to learn and grow. Lastly, focus on networking and building relationships with professionals across the organization; these connections can be invaluable for your future career!

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.:

What I liked most about my position at T. Rowe Price was the opportunity to work on meaningful projects that made a real impact within the department, along with the chance to network with a diverse range of professionals. I especially loved the emphasis on diversity and inclusion, which strongly aligned with my own ethics and morals. The numerous opportunities to grow and learn in such an inclusive environment were invaluable. The Career Center was instrumental in guiding me through the application process and preparing me for the interviews, helping me secure this incredible experience!

Past, Present, and Future of Cybersecurity
Dr. Eugene H. Spafford, Purdue University

1:00pm EDT, Wednesday, September 4, 2024
ITE 325b, UMBC

Cybersecurity has been an area of study for about 50 years. It has come a long way in that time but is still an immature field in many ways. In this talk, I will share some recollections of the history and advances that I believe have been of special note, such as the rise of malware and the move to large-scale networking. I will also share some observations about the current computing environment and what it portends for cybersecurity needs in the coming years. I will conclude with time for Q&A from the audience.

Professor Spafford is one of the most senior academics in the field of cybersecurity. During his 46 years in computing—including 37 years as a faculty member at Purdue University — Spaf (as he is widely known) has worked on issues in privacy, public policy, law enforcement, software engineering, education, social networks, operating systems, and cyber security. He has been involved in the development of fundamental technologies in intrusion detection, incident response, firewalls, integrity management, and forensic investigation. His interests range over these and many other areas, and this has been one of the factors behind his leadership of CERIAS, the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security, of which he is now the Executive Director Emeritus. In that role, he continues to be a polymathic futurist, although occasionally, some view him as simply an iconoclastic crank.

Dr. Spafford has been recognized with significant honors from various organizations. These include being elected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAA&S) and the Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS); a Life Fellow of the ACM, the IEEE, and the (ISC)2; a Life Distinguished Fellow of the ISSA; and a member of the Cyber Security Hall of Fame — the only person to ever hold all these distinctions. In 2012, he was named one of Purdue's inaugural Morrill Professors — the university's highest award for the combination of scholarship, teaching, and service. In 2016, he received the State of Indiana's highest civilian honor by being named as a Sagamore of the Wabash.

CBEE students visit the Ashburton Filtration Plant

    <Tagline>Spring 2024 - Environmental Physicochemical Process</Tagline>

At the end of the Spring 2024 semester, Dr. Blaney’s Environmental Physicochemical Processes course (ENCH 412 and ENEN 612) visited the Ashburton Filtration Plant, Baltimore’s largest drinking water treatment plant. Students had the chance to see how the processes they learned about in class, namely coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, granular media filtration, and disinfection, treat 165 million gallons of drinking water for Baltimore every day.

Mohammed Almafrachi, Engineering Manager for the Baltimore City Department of Public Works, gave an excellent tour. His in-depth knowledge of the treatment processes and on-the-ground experience managing the facility helped students understand how the concepts that they learned in class provide clean drinking water to Baltimore residents. He stressed the importance of being adaptable to challenges, telling the students “You can’t troubleshoot without trouble.”

We also enjoyed learning about the importance of water quality testing throughout the distribution system from Deneen Gordon, the Laboratory Technical Administrator for Baltimore’s drinking water treatment plants. She emphasized the new challenges awaiting the next generation of water quality engineers and motivated our students to tackle those challenges head on.

Thanks to all of the other Ashburton staff members that shared their expertise with us during the visit. We left inspired by your commitment to ensuring the health and safety of Baltimore residents. Thank you for your service!

What You Need to Get a Job On-Campus

<Tagline>Here are some tips to help you get your next position.</Tagline>

Welcome to the Fall semester! After what was hopefully a
relaxing and perhaps even productive summer, we are coming back to campus to
take classes and get reconnected with friends and student organizations.

Additionally, you may be hoping to get hired this semester.
Due to a variety of reasons, perhaps the only jobs you can apply to are the
ones that are on-campus. You may be experiencing challenges trying to locate
on-campus employment, asking yourself where can you find these jobs, and how
can you land one sooner rather than later?

At the Career Center, we totally understand and are here to
help! Here are a few tips to get you started.

Go to Handshake. Handshake is the one-stop shop
for students to find employment. By adjusting the filters in your search
parameters to on-campus positions, you’ll be able to find new openings as they
are posted and be able to apply as soon as possible. Just remember — not all
campus jobs are posted on Handshake, so you may need to go beyond the platform.

Build Your Network. Whether you like it or not, your network can
help tremendously when it comes to the job market. By knowing students who are
working in your desired positions, you may be able to get a solid referral. By
connecting with faculty members and expressing interest in their work, you
might be invited to join their lab. Find opportunities such as these to get
    insider information on open positions.

Attend Career Events. Events hosted by the Career Center may lead
you to a job position that’s a good fit! By becoming active on-campus and
showing up to events regularly, you will increase your visibility and may become top of mind for employers when a job opening comes up.

    Utilize Online Resources. The
Career Center’s website is full of helpful resources to give you the tools that
you need to find a position. In particular, we have an entire section on our
    website dedicated to help you
find an internship or job. Take advantage of what our website has to offer,
and search our pages for the latest information.

    Get
    Personalized Support. If
you need 1:1 support or guidance through this process, you can schedule an appointment
with the Career Center. Our staff are more than happy to help you discover the
best path in terms of finding an on-campus job.

We hope that you will use some or all of these tips to find
the perfect on-campus job for you. Best of luck with your
    search!

Want to connect with multiple on-campus employers looking to hire students just like you? Consider attending the On-Campus &
Part-Time Jobs Expo on Thursday, September 5, from 11 AM to 2 PM.
