Intern of the week: Edwin Quinn for Mech. Engineering!

<Tagline>Check out his internship with the KeyW Corporation!</Tagline>

Name:Edwin Quinn

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: KeyW Corporation

Position Title: Electronics Packaging Engineer

Major(s)/Minor(s):Mechanical Engineering

Work Term:Summer/Fall 2017

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

Our division develops micro-electronic devices with a focus on software defined radios. We support large contracts for major federal customers in the area. As an intern, I am responsible for the design and process development of electro-mechanical assemblies. My responsibilities include calculating, testing and mitigating issues involving circuit board strain, thermal management and environmental durability. I often utilize plating, machining and other manufacturing processes to complete my designs. I have access to a wide variety of equipment including a UV Laser, multiple CNCs, an X-Ray and extensive lab space to help with the engineering process.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I found my internship through the UMBC career fair. The career center at UMBC helped me improve my resume and advised me on success factors when interfacing with professionals.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I enjoy the hands on learning the most. I find that I am constantly applying my academic knowledge when solving problems. I also value learning how to use new software and equipment to apply that knowledge. It is very rewarding when you are instrumental in solving an engineering problem, even if it is on a small scale. I also enjoy the variety of the work that the job provides. No two projects are the same and there is always a new problem to solve. On a higher level, I think learning how an engineering company is organized and run is invaluable career experience.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I think I bring a new approach to how typical engineering problems are solved. There are many processes in micro-electronics that have been done the same way for many years. As an intern, I have brought new ideas to the table in terms of materials and processes. For instance, on a recent project I suggested the use of cobalt over typical copper alloys because of cobalt's rigidity and other beneficial material properties. Having little to no experience can be a huge upside in that it gives a fresh perspective on solving problems.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Getting an internship is invaluable training for any student. I think that an internship is a big confidence booster and a great way to learn about yourself. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there at career fairs and networking events.

    An Introduction to Quantum Cryptography:
Or, How Alice Outwits Eve

Sam Lomonaco, CSEE, UMBC
12:00–1:00pm, Friday, 17 November 2017, ITE 231, UMBC

Alice and Bob wish to communicate without the archvillainess Eve eavesdropping on their conversation. Alice decides to take two college courses, one in cryptography, the other in quantum mechanics. During the courses, she discovers she can use what she has learned to devise a cryptographic communication system that automatically detects whether or not Eve is up to her villainous eavesdropping. Some of the topics discussed are Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle, the Vernam cipher, the BB84 and B92 cryptographic protocols. The talk ends with a discussion of some of Eve’s possible eavesdropping strategies, i.e., opaque eavesdropping, translucent eavesdropping, and translucent eavesdropping with entanglement.

Samuel J. Lomonaco Jr. received his PhD in mathematics from Princeton University. He has been a full professor of computer science and electrical engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) since 1985, serving as founding chair of the CS Department from 1985 to 1991.
Researcher of the Week: Kourtney Rutkowski

<Tagline>Research and cultural experiences in Porto, Portugal!</Tagline>

Kourtney Rutkowski is majoring in Mechanical Engineering
with a minor in Psychology. She will graduate with her B.S. in May, 2018, and
in 2019 she will complete her M.S. as part of the accelerated B.S./M.S. program
in Mechanical Engineering. She is also a member of the Honors College, a CWIT
Scholar, a Grand Challenges Scholar, and a member of Tau Beta Pi. She is
currently conducting research at the Universidade do Porto in Portugal, as the
first UMBC student to study in the UMBC/Porto exchange program.

What are your
research interests? I am interested in materials, composites, and additive
manufacturing with metals and thermoplastics. This research is applicable for
many industries, including the aeronautical, energy, defense, and automotive
    industries.

Describe your project: My current research project is determining a manufacturing
strategy for the production of metal/polymer composite sheets. Currently, I am
looking at which types of surface treatments are needed to best adhere the
polymer, a thermoplastic prepreg, to sheet metal. The conditions in which the
prepreg is applied and cured must also be tested, and material characterization
will be performed to determine which process would be optimal for production
purposes. The reason that this is important is that polymer/metal composite
such as these are low in weight but are high enough in strength to replace
heavier materials, especially in the transportation industries to improve
safety and fuel economy. When I return from Porto, I will join the research team in Dr. Marcus Zupan’s
lab, focusing on the development of tools and methodologies for qualifying
additively manufactured parts. This research is in collaboration with JHUAPL
and PAX River, and can improve the additive manufacturing technologies and part
    quality.

Who are your mentors and why did you choose them? I work withProfessors Abel Santos and António Torres
Marques at the Universidade do Porto. Professor Abel teaches the Global
Engineering class on the Porto side, allowing me to meet him from when I took
the class in the Fall 2016 semester at UMBC. Professor Torres Marques was
introduced to me by Dr. Zupan and is my main research advisor in Porto. Their
dedication to the process, helping me get prepared to come to Porto, and helping
with the bureaucracy once I arrived has been invaluable. They also introduced
me to their labs and graduate students, and have been very helpful in
regards to questions involving my research project.

How did you become
interested in this project? As an avid outdoorswoman, I’m passionate about finding solutions for the conservation and preservation of our natural resources and mitigating for and adapting to climate change. This led to an interest in renewable energy sources, and using my skills as an engineer to solve problems related to making renewables for more efficient and economical manufacturing. Through the Global Engineering course, I learned about different international cultures and made some good friends. I also studied abroad in Germany in January and took a course in renewable energy sources in Kassel, Germany. I wanted to study abroad in Porto and open the gate as the first student in the UMBC/Porto collaboration. I worked with Dr. Zupan and Dr. Moreira to complete an application to the Mobile 2+ Erasmus scholarship and was awarded a living stipend, airfare, health insurance, access to cultural events, and opportunities to interact with students from around the world, as well as the engineering faculty from U.Porto.

What has been the most
unexpected thing about your experience abroad? I love my time here in Portugal but I have definitely had
some mishaps! My second week in Porto a homeless woman stole my jacket at a
café, and I still see her wearing it around the downtown area. My first time
traveling outside of Porto, I got on the wrong train coming back from Lisbon and
got kicked off at a train station in the middle of nowhere because I didn’t
have enough cash to pay to the fare. Most recently, I had my mom send me some
winter clothes which got held up in the Portuguese customs for a month, but
luckily my flatmate lent me some for my travels further North.

What has been the
most rewarding part? One of the best things was finally meeting my friends in
person were from Porto and I had met through the UMBC Global Engineering
course. In that course, students from around the world work in teams on
theoretical solutions for global issues. Students interact via Skype and
WhatsApp, and for some students, like myself, there were some strong
friendships formed across the ocean. Meeting those friends who I had made, as
well as making new friends here who are from across the world, has allowed me to
learn about a variety of cultures and open my mind more and more every day. Even
better, day by day I find myself feeling like a local here in Porto, and know
that it will always be a second home for me.

What will you do next
with your research? I’m hoping to bring back what I’m learning to Dr. Zupan’s
lab and use my experiences as a basis to start my thesis research, which I hope
to publish. I will present on my Porto experience and the research I conducted
    there at URCAD, in April.

What is your advice
to other students about getting involved in research? Be flexible and open minded. Don’t be afraid to take risks-
say yes to things and take opportunities as they come. Ask for help- make
connections and friends wherever you go. Don’t get locked into graduation
dates. Studying abroad won’t take any extra time- you can combine it with
Master’s work or do it over the summer or winter, so it won’t take time out of your
academic schedule, even in a major with successive classes like engineering! If for some reason it does take extra time, the
experience to go abroad is more valuable than graduating in four years. Money
is not an issue- there are so many ways to get it paid for and Portugal is
really cheap in terms of the cost of living.
My rent is 250 euros a month and includes utilities! No one looks back and regrets studying abroad and
says, “I’m glad I didn’t do that so that I could graduate on time.”

What else are you
involved in on campus? Besides the scholar’s programs and honors organizations that
I am involved in, I am also involved with numerous other things on campus. I am
an Undergraduate Teaching Fellow for the Mechanical Engineering department,
which besides simply teaching the students, has also allowed me to meet and
mentor the students in the years below me. I also try to work through my
scholar’s program, CWIT to be a role model for the young women in engineering
who are in the cohorts after me. I volunteer with an organization that holds
its state competition here at UMBC named First Lego League (FLL). FLL is STEM
competition for elementary and middle school students that helps to introduce
them to topics such as engineering, and seeing the passion and intelligence of
these students continuously encourages me in the promotion of STEM and fills me
with hope for the next generation of engineers. Last but not least, I am a
member of UMBC Cru and the UMBC Rock Climbing Club.

Career goals? After completing my M.S., I plan on obtaining a Ph.D. in environmental engineering. I hope to use my education to pursue a career that can create renewable energy solutions to help the environment, and people, in a large-scale way. After a while in industry, I plan on following the path of some of my mentors and becoming a college professor.

A Practitioner’s Introduction to Deep Learning

Ashwin Kumar Ganesan, PhD student

1:00-2:00pm Friday, 17 November 2017, ITE325, UMBC

In recent years, Deep Neural Networks have been highly successful at performing a number of tasks in computer vision, natural language processing and artificial intelligence in general. The remarkable performance gains have led to universities and industries investing heavily in this space. This investment creates a thriving open source ecosystem of tools & libraries that aid the design of new architectures, algorithm research as well as data collection.

This talk (and hands-on session) introduce people to some of the basics of machine learning, neural networks and discusses some of the popular neural network architectures. We take a dive into one of the popular libraries, Tensorflow, and an associated abstraction library Keras.

To participate in the hands-on aspects of the workshop, bring a laptop computer with Python installed and install the following libraries using pip. For windows or (any other OS) consider doing an installation of anaconda that has all the necessary libraries.

numpy, scipy & scikit-learn

tensorflow / tensoflow-gpu (The first one is the GPU version)

matplotlib for visualizations (if necessary)

jupyter & ipython (We will use python2.7 in our experiments)

Volunteer to help in UMBC’s Hour of Code events, Dec 4 and 5

Hour of Code is a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science using a one-hour coding activity. The one hour coding activity is designed to show that anyone can learn the basics of coding, and to create a more inclusive computer science community. The CS Education student organization, with support from the CS Matters in Maryland CS education project, will host UMBC’s Hour of Code event on Monday (Dec. 4) and Tuesday (Dec. 5).

On December 4th from 10am-1pm, they will host the Hour of Code event for anyone who wants to try the coding activities on Main Street.

On December 5th from 11am-2pm, they will have special guests. Some students from Lakeland Elementary School will learn to code along with President Freeman Hrabowski.

The CS Education Club needs volunteers to make this event a success. Coding experience is useful, but not necessary. They will host training sessions prior to the event for everyone who volunteers. The training will give you a chance to try our Hour of Code activity along with a Makey Makey activity. Read about last year’s Hour of Code event at UMBC here.

The Secrets to Networking

<Tagline>Use the holiday break to start making connections!</Tagline>

You hear it all the time: “The best way to find a job is through networking.” The word networking gets thrown around a lot, but not everyone is really sure how it works, or what the benefits are. The idea is that you have to have connections; you have to “know people”. Personally, I don’t know any “people”, so how am I supposed to network and get a good job? The Career Center is your networking connection. We bring employers to you, and we even bus you to employers! There are constantly networking events going on on-campus, which is why the best plan is to look at our calendar of events and plan out when your next networking adventure will be!

The truth is: you do know people. Even your relatives count, so when you’re at the thanksgiving table, you should be networking! And that doesn’t mean outright asking them for a job, but rather asking if they know people who work in your desired field. Personally, as a psychology major, my family members tell me about their friends who own their own counseling practice, and are totally willing to answer my questions. I’ve even been given internship offers from these friends of relatives. A lot of introverts might be reading this and thinking the idea of approaching someone to ask about connections is a horrible idea, but there are also opportunities for you. Introverts can be great observers and great listeners, which can still help you pick up details about where to find connections. Remember: everyone has connections, and YOU have the means of finding them!

There are several types of networking events available to UMBC students. The biggest and most popular event is the big Career and Internship Fair held each semester. It’s like speed-dating for jobs! But there are many others that students aren’t aware of. For example: we have information sessions where you can meet directly with employers like the CIA this week or Northwestern Mutual Financial Network a few days later. This is an easy and effective way to meet with recruiters and get your name on their good list. We also have our On the Road series, where the Career Center provides transportation to places like T. Rowe Price, the Space Telescope Science Institute, Exelon, and tons more. The series is done for this semester, but it picks right up again in February with a trip to Cisco Systems where students will get a tour of the facilities, as well as an inside scoop on internship and career opportunities.

Even with all of these free and easy events to connect you directly to employers, you might be wondering what to do with yourself once you actually get there. A great place to start before actually meeting people in person is the website LinkedIn. UMBC has several networking pages on LinkedIn including the UMBC Alumni-Student Networking Group that connects you directly to UMBC alumni in your desired field. Also, the Career Center website has a list of Top 10 Networking Tips to help you get started, as well as tools to develop your 30-second commercial. One effective networking strategy - especially if you are still exploring your career interests - is the Informational Interview, where YOU get to interview a professional in your desired field about what it’s like to do what they do, and how you could become successful in the field. Now networking doesn’t seem so scary, right? So get there and get networking!
