<Tagline>Learn about this opportunity to gain some coding experience!</Tagline>

In one of my first blog posts, I wrote about the stigma against liberal arts majors; the idea that liberal arts majors are somehow inferior to STEM majors because of the difficulty of their majors. I don’t think that that is true, in the least bit. I think that many liberal arts majors can accomplish and master the difficult of STEM majors, and I believe that they should.

You might be asking yourself why should you, though? Why does it matter having skills in a field that isn’t directly related to what you’re interested in? In a world that is becoming so heavily reliant on technology, having some STEM background is favorable. Knowing a little coding can make you extremely competitive. When applying to jobs in the Social Sciences, skills in the STEM field such as coding make you stand out in a sea of people with similar experiences.

Since I was little, I wanted to be an astronomer. I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent watching the TV show Cosmos or those specials on National Geographic, trying to make sense of the world. But after taking my GT Physics class in high school, I was fairly certain that I was incapable of learning the math and science necessary to succeed as an astronomer. So, I switched gears and focused entirely on law. In retrospect, I’m happy with my decision. There are, however, times when I wonder whether or not I could have done it; I only made my decision based on one or two classes. There are times when I stare at my course catalog, wishing I had taken particular prereqs so I could take the science classes I was interested in, even if I didn’t major in the field.

Then I think about what skills I’ve learned being a Political Science major that would help me in a STEM field. On the surface, I think none. Then I remember that I’m a critical thinker because of these classes. I can look at a big chunk of text and find minute details, figuring out ways to connect these thoughts together. These are skills that translate in the STEM field.

I don’t see the world in black and white. In my mind, two plus two doesn’t always equal four. I think I don’t belong in the STEM field. But, just because I’m not a methodical thinker doesn’t mean I’m not valuable. We want majors of all kinds on our Mock Trial team. They bring a new and exciting perspective on facts and details that many of us see the same way, and vice versa. Imagine how different the world would be if we had doctors with a background in social work taking care of patients.

We all matter, so that’s why I say don’t knock it until you try it.

HackUMBC is coming up the weekend of April 29-30, and I suggest that you all check it out or submit an application to be part of it. Applications are rolling. To find more information, visithttp://innovate.hackumbc.org/. It’s the perfect opportunity for you to learn new skills and test the waters of a field you may not have ever considered.

Women in Activism: a Roundtable Round-Up

The Women’s Center ended our spring roundtable series on a high note last Thursday with Women in Activism. If you weren’t able to join us for our lively discussion, here’s a short round-up of what you missed!

This semester’s roundtable series focused on the ways that women are made invisible and silenced within certain spaces. For this discussion on activism, we began with a short visual presentation that illustrates how women often go unseen within the very movements they’ve worked to create.

Our three panelists shared their insights on the topic to help launch our discussion: Dr. Beverly Bickel from Language, Literacy and Culture (LLC); Iman Said, a junior Psychology major and Baltimore-based activist; and Jacki Stone, Community Health and Safety Specialist and a graduate student in LLC.

from left to right: Panelists Jackie Stone, Beverly Bickel, and Iman Said

Important points of discussion are as follows:

People of various identities carry different forms of knowledge with them; in order to build coalitions and activist movements, we must value and allow space for multiple perspectives, lived experiences, and ways of knowing.

Women have always been activists, but not always publicly visible—especially those with multiply marginalized identities.

Stereotypes can often lead to negative perceptions of women who speak up and engage in activism (e.g. “bossy,” “Feminazi,” or “angry Black woman” stereotypes).

Perfectionism was cited as a common barrier women face. This leads to women doubting their own knowledge and capabilities as activists and as leaders, as seen with imposter syndrome.

Activism looks different for everyone—it may be artistic expression, critical conversations at home, or part of your profession. Activism is not limited to hitting the streets chanting.

All activists must make room to learn and grow. It’s important to understand that we don’t know everything, that it’s okay to speak less, listen more, and humble ourselves within the work that we do. This way, we make space for those who we tend not to hear, and alter our perspectives based upon the information others give us.

Overall, we had a very rewarding discussion with our panelists, as well as our community members who shared their own experiences and insights!

A Practical Introduction to Penetration Testing

    University of Kassel, Germany
and UMBC 2017

12:00noon Friday, 28 April 2017, ITE 227, UMBC

While many students learn the theoretical concepts of cybersecurity and cryptology at universities, their exposure to real life systems and the application of learned theoretical foundations in the real world is usually limited. Additionally, most students and sometimes even students of cybersecurity often deal with cybersecurity threats on a very abstract level, thereby being unaware that these threats are not abstract but real for everyone, including for themselves.

Therefore, this talk intends to raise the awareness about real cybersecurity threats for everyone by demonstrating live the process of penetration testing a system. I will show live how an attacker can gain control over a victim’s PC in a matter of seconds, and how this attack can be prevented. To do so, several techniques and tools will be used, including breaking a WPA-protected wireless network, defeating SSL/TLS encryption, and obtaining a reverse shell with system rights on the victim’s computer.

By experiencing these attacks in a simulated penetration test, we can gain a deeper understanding of the theoretical foundations and their implications for real-life scenarios. With this knowledge, the attack vectors can be mitigated to a bare minimum. In many cases, the cybersecurity-aware usage of IT systems is already countering many real threats.

Prof. Dr. Arno Wacker is an assistant professor with the University of Kassel in Germany and the head of the research group Applied Information Security (AIS). Currently, he is a visiting assistant professor at UMBC teaching the network security class. He is also the lead of the open source project CrypTool 2 and a member of the steering group of MysteryTwister C3 . His main research interests are modern security protocols for decentralized distributed systems, computerized cryptanalysis of classical ciphers, and cybersecurity awareness. At the University of Kassel, he teaches classes about cryptology and cybersecurity. Additionally, he regularly offers cryptology workshops for students at local schools and gives talks about penetration testing for companies. Email: <*protected email*>
