Intern of the Week: Ashley Espiritu for Graphic Design

<Tagline>Ashley worked as an Associate Designer with Mindgrub!</Tagline>

Name: Ashley Espiritu

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Mindgrub

Position Title: Associate Designer

Major: Graphic Design

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

As an Associate Design Intern, I assist in creation of visual and interactive designs for clients through creative problem solving and best practice production methods. My responsibilities include executing and delivering high quality design based on client goals and contemporary design concepts. I receive input, critique, and advice from the client and team to move a project forward. I collaborate with project team members and design leads to ensure the creative vision is fully realized. My internship involved contributing to a positive, creative, and supportive atmosphere.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I had a referral and submitted my resume and link to my online portfolio.

Which resources did you use to find your current experience?

I went through a friend who is a UMBC alumni.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

It is the best place to learn as an intern. Mindgrub has a very healthy work culture. The superiors are more like mentors that are approachable and guide the employees. The leaders teach the interns the right approach on how to solve a problem. Mindgrub promotes team building activities to bind the employees together. It conducts training programs, workshops, seminars and presentations to upgrade the existing skills of the employees. They also provide not only food and drinks but also fitness tools and games to keep their employees energize and happy.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

My supervisor told me that I have an "outstanding attitude and work ethic." Also, my co-workers praise my works. I strongly believe that I have helped the company deliver great visual designs to the clients.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

First, know the environment of the work place by either having a chat with a current employee or take a time to have a research about the company. Second, attend events that offers you a chance to meet the possible employers or at least the possible co-worker. Third, speak with any professionals within your rich like your professors, academic advisor, and the Career Center. They can help you find your skills, personality, and interests, which will help you get the best internship.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position.

An internship teaches you the right and most current tools for each project. Great supervisors ask you what you want to learn so that they can direct you to the right path of learning and save you time learning other things that you wouldn't need in the real world. My internship taught me how to be efficient and organized in a multitasking world. Earning internship credits saves you a lot of time and money which I highly recommend for students to do. The Career Center is the best way to look for an internship because they will make sure that you are learning and not just doing some tasks that your co-workers wouldn't want to do.

Ashley is pictured with her supervisor Rob Rhinehart, who is Mindgrub's Director of Creative Strategy.

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week? The UMBC Review, UMBC’s annual peer-reviewed research journal, which features academic papers written by UMBC undergraduates, makes its debut at this event- stop by and get your copy! Come hear the alumni keynote speaker talk about their experiences after UMBC, and how being an undergraduate researcher benefited them.

UMBC is unique in providing this opportunity for undergraduate students to conduct and present their research in a professional and supportive setting. Students get valuable feedback from their peers, faculty, and staff, and practice their public speaking and presentations skills. This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBC’s commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.

What You Need to Know About Take Back The Night & Craftivism

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the Women’s Center is hosting its fifth consecutive Take Back The Night (TBTN) on Thursday, April 13th. Over the years, we’ve had a lot of questions about what Take Back the Night exactly is, why it looks the way it does, and how students can get involved. To help get those questions answered this year, we’ve doing a “What You Need to Know” series focused on TBTN so stay tuned for more posts over the next couple of weeks. This is the fifth post in the series and it focuses on the last part of Take Back the Night which is craftivism and community building.

Hearing and sharing survivors’ stories of sexual violence can be empowering, challenging, and emotional. We know that people process their feelings in different ways, and so following survivor speak out and march, the event continues with Craftivism on Main Street. This portion of the program is intended to provide space for reflection, creative expression, and community building.

When the marchers return to Main Street, there will be tables set up with art supplies for anyone wishing to contribute to one of the community craft projects we’ll have available: the FORCE Monument Quilt, the Clothesline Project, and the Dear Survivor scrapbook. We also encourage attendees to check out the resource tables to learn more about various campus and community organizations and services.

A volunteer from FORCE will be present to assist anyone interested in making a quilt square for the Monument Quilt. The Monument Quilt is a crowd-sourced collection of testimonials from survivors of sexual violence, as well as their allies. This national project will eventually blanket the National Mall with the phrase Not Alone. The quilt is a way to demand public space to heal, and create a new culture where survivors are publicly supported, rather than publicly shamed.

All are welcome to add a page to our Dear Survivor scrapbook, which features messages of hope, healing, and solidarity from survivors and allies who have attended TBTN in past years. The scrapbook can be found in the Women’s Center lounge.

The Dear Survivor scrapbook offers messages of healing and solidarity.

Materials for the Clothesline Project will be available for survivors who would like to give voice to their experience by decorating a shirt that will be displayed during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Every April, these shirts are hung shoulder-to-shoulder on a clothesline on Main Street to give public testimony to the problems of sexual and gender-based violence. Please note that while allies are invited to participate in the Monument Quilt and Dear Survivor scrapbook, the Clothesline Project is intended for those who identify as survivors.

TBTN attendees decorate T-shirts for the Clothesline Project.

For those who prefer a quieter space for reflection, there will be a self-care station set up in the commuter lounge available during the survivor speak out and the rest of the evening. There will be tissues, stress balls, coloring supplies, and other resources for self-care. The station also provides a more private space where attendees can speak with one of the counselors on call, if needed.
