International internship in the Republic of Turkey
Title: Integrative Biological Studies of Honey Bees in the Republic of Turkey
An eight-week summer program is sponsored by the University of Central Oklahoma. The first week will consider aspects of the scientific process and experimental design before spending seven weeks in the country of Turkey (based at Uludag University in Bursa) to study aspects of the foraging ecology of solitary bees and honey bees in their native region of the world. These pollinator species are invasive in the United States but have potentially positive impacts on agriculture in both the US and Turkey.
Understanding the link between organisms and their history in other regions of the world is a major goal of this program. In addition, undergraduates will be shown the importance of international scientific collaboration as they participate in research objectives (described below) with a multinational team of scientists from the US, Turkey, Greece, and Bulgaria.
Research Information:
Three broad areas of investigation will be included in the project. These include:
- biogeographical comparisons of pollination systems in native and non-native settings that explore mechanisms of biological invasion;
- foraging dynamics of bees as mediated by visual clues and/or handling time at flowers; and
- behavioral assays to test effects of food quality and conditioning to various stimuli. Within these areas we test hypotheses that are ecological, behavioral, physiological, and genetic in nature. The program runs from June 5 through July 28, 2017
The deadline to apply is MARCH 20, 2017
Benefits include:
- Travel, housing, AND meals will be covered
- A $4,200 stipend will be provided
- Cost of the Turkish visa (about $25) will be subtracted from the stipend.
- Course credit is optional.

Choosing what to wear to an interview or professional event may seem like a trivial task to decide, but from experience, I can tell you it’s not.
I have two interviews scheduled in the next two weeks, and it is necessarythat I go shopping for business clothes for those interviews. I had a mock trial invitational this past weekend, and I realized two things during my trials. 1, there’s a hole in my only professional dress, and 2, there’s a hole in my suit pants. I spent all of my trials trying to make sure that my back wasn’t facing the judges and I stood in a way that the holes would be concealed.
That whole fiasco could have been avoided if I had just taken a few seconds the night before or the morning of to inspect my outfits. Unfortunately, I didn’t, and I was uncomfortable the entireweekend.
I digress. The point I’m trying to make is that it is important to dress professionally, so you look respectable and make a good first impression, but also so that you’re comfortable and not constantly worrying about a piece of clothing moving, or your pants being too tight.
I also recognize that buying professional clothing can be expensive. I’m a college student, working on a college student’s budget, so I understand how difficult it can be to find affordable clothing that will last you for a long time.
Still, that’s not an excuse. During my last trial, one of the attorneys on the opposing side was wearing jeans and a blazer during our round. I know it’s a mock trial, but that was just bizarre. When you walk into a professional setting, you have to look like you belong in a professional setting.
So, where can you go to get cheap clothing? Well, the Career Center offers you a better alternative- free clothing! On Thursday, March 30th, and Friday, March 31st, the Career Center is hosting its annual UMBC Suits You! You can stop by Harbor Hall and select a few business attire pieces for yourself, absolutely free! We want you to be and look confident when you walk into a professional event, so we make sure all the clothing we offer you looks great!
Deciding what you want to wear to an interview may seem like a simple enough task, but it’s still important to try your outfit on before you get ready to leave. You can make sure you’re comfortable and that everything fits properly. Interviews are nerve wracking enough; you don’t need to add on being worried about what you look like.
We’re also hosting a Dress to Impress workshop on March 29, from 12 PM to 1 PM, in Commons 331. Anyone who attends gets earlier admission to UMBC Suits You on Thursday, March 30th! Take advantage of the resources UMBC offers you because soon enough they’ll no longer be at your disposal.

OVERVIEW:
The Assessment Program at the American Institutes for Research (AIR) is a well- regarded organization that is growing rapidly. We focus on providing our clients with customized assessments that not only measure student achievement against state standards, but also provide meaningful score reports that can help students, parents, and educators address any areas of student weakness. Our environment is fast-paced and requires people at all levels who are willing to roll up their sleeves to get the work done on time while maintaining high quality.
AIR is currently seeking Math and Science Test Development Interns to provide assistance on test development projects in our Washington, DC office for the summer. The ideal candidate will start in May and work full time through mid-August.
