Graduate School

 <Tagline>Have questions about graduate school?</Tagline>

I have wanted to go to law school since I was 15 years old. I had this amazing Government and Politics teacher that made me excited to go to class (even if it was at 7:25 AM), that made me want to learn. A first for me, a high school student who absolutely dreaded waking up at 6 AM.

After college, my sister went on to attend law school and her experiences affirmed my desire to continue my legal studies after I graduate.

However, for a lot of us, our paths are not as determined. We wonder should we go straight into the job force, is it worth spending the exorbitant amounts of money that graduate school requires, or we’re not sure what specific course of study we want to pursue after we graduate. Maybe you’re worried about the time it would take to complete a degree.

Some graduate programs are long, and maybe you’re interested in a long graduate program, but you don’t want to commit such a large chunk of your life to it right now. But if you’re even slightly considering graduate school, then check out The Career Center’s website for some guidance.

The website provides students with a number of different resources to help guide them through the process of looking at applying for graduate school. Here are some of the things it can help you with:

Making a timeline. If you already know what kind of professional school you want to attend (like medical, or dental), there are also timelines geared specifically towards those.

If you’re unsure of whether or not graduate school is for you, there’s a page that provides you with some questions to think about when you’re making that decision.

If you want to go to graduate school, but you’re not sure about going immediately after graduating, here’s a link that can explain how a gap year works.

Are you concerned about the cost of graduate school? I know I am. Here’s some information on how you can fund your education.

These are only a few of the resources that the website provides. Be sure to peruse it, there is tons of valuable information!

Getting to talk to graduate school representatives can also be extremely helpful in understanding where you want to take your career. They can provide you with real world examples and relay their personal experiences.

On Monday, October 31, from 12-1:30 PM in UC 312, Johns Hopkins University’s graduate admissions will be holding an information session. Attend this information session to explore the array of full-time master’s, doctoral, and MD programs available to you at Johns Hopkins University. You’ll also be able to ask any questions you may have about the graduate school!

Representatives from each of the following Schools/Areas will be on hand:

Advanced Academic Program (Krieger School of Arts and Sciences)

School of Advanced International Studies

Carey Business School

School of Education

School of Medicine

School of Nursing

Bloomberg School of Public Health

This is the perfect time to network and get one foot in the door. Impressing one of these representatives can give you a step up from other applicants, so definitely try to take time out of your busy day and attend the information session!

Making life decisions is scary and difficult, but if you take the time to do your research and learn about all of your options, you might find yourself choosing a path that will allow you to do what you’re passionate about!

Mapping Home: UMBC Campus Maps

When I was little, I used to draw maps of my neighborhood. Once I was done with my neighborhood, I’d move onto creating maps for make believe neighborhoods including everything I thought a community should have – homes, trees, a playground and hospital, a library.

When the Critical Social Justice planning team picked the theme of Home this year, just a few short weeks later, the City Paper published its “Maps” issue. The front cover immediately caught my attention and took me back to my childhood of my own map making days.

As our intro blog post to this year’s theme states: “In honor of UMBC’s 50th Anniversary, this year’s CSJ theme of Home recognizes UMBC as a home to many of us. As we celebrate and contemplate UMBC as a home for learning, activism, and social change, we embrace the opportunity to invest ourselves in creating meaningful change here on campus in addition to taking our newly gained insights and knowledge with us back home, wherever that may be.” With this in mind, as we read through the City Paper maps issue, we wondered what it would be like to create our own maps of UMBC.

Since the fall semester began, the Women’s Center Advisory Board and student staff have all made their own campus maps. This week all of the Women’s Center discussion groups will also be creating their campus maps. When creating our maps, we asked each person to consider specific prompts such as: What is your favorite place on campus? Where can you can find others in your community or get your needs met? What is something you want to change?

It’s been fascinating to see the ways in which home has shown up in each of our maps and the ways in which challenges and complexities of home present themselves as well. Each person’s map tells a different story about who they are and what their experience is like at UMBC. It had allowed for us to have conversations of belonging and mattering, discussions of accessibility, environmental justice, and activism, as well as reflections on ways to bridge our home at UMBC with our other homes to include Baltimore.

What would your campus map look like?

Stop by Main Street this Wednesday, October 19th from 11:30-1:30pm to create your UMBC map and pick up a Critical Social Justice: Home events calendar.

Campus maps will be displayed at the “Who Gets a Home on College” CSJ event on Thursday, October 27th which will take place on Main Street from 11:30-1:30pm.

One technology currently being developed is the use of lipid-tailed molecules that rapidly insert into cell membranes. This passive loading process is efficient, doesn't hurt the cells, and can endow them with many new functions. By loading immune-modulating drugs directly onto and into cells isolated from the blood, we can specifically target drugs that would be potentially toxic or ineffective if injected systemically. Our data show that this method can provide signals to enhance the function of the carrier cell to make them impervious to suppressive effects in the body. Other signals can be provided that inactivate suppressive neighboring cells that carrier cells encounter while traveling in the body to kill tumor cells.

Andreas Seas: Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is defined as the partial or total occlusion of the femoral artery in the leg. It is commonly treated through endovascular approaches (I.e. stent placement), yet these procedures have high rates of failure. In this work, artificial networks are introduced as possible tools to help in preoperative planning by providing insight into arterial pathology prior to surgery. It was shown that these networks are able to boost the predictive ability of a set of data beyond linear and multivariate models, as well as provide important insight into the most important factors in PAD development. Future work will involve prediction of mechanical properties using neural networks.
