    <p>This week I will be focusing on the protest surrounding the death of <a href="http://heavy.com/news/2016/09/keith-lamont-scott-charlotte-north-carolina-police-shooting-daughter-facebook-live-video-brother-officer-name-photos-reading-book/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Keith Lamont Scott</a>. Anti-police brutality protests have started in cities all over the country, the loudest taking place in <a href="https://mic.com/articles/154843/what-s-happening-in-charlotte-north-carolina-latest-on-protests-of-police-shooting#.CWoBzjwSz" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Charlotte, North Carolina</a>, which is now in a <a href="http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-charlotte-protests-20160921-snap-story.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">state of emergency</a>.</p>
    <p>I also just read this important and powerful post by fellow UMBC Retriever, Vanessa… please read it and consider the ways in which <em><a href="https://umbcbreakingground.wordpress.com/2016/09/22/black-issues-are-retriever-issues/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Black Issues Are Retriever Issues. </a></em></p>
    <p>Equally important, I want to make sure we are all taking care of ourselves. Engage in whatever self-care practices make you feel the best. Express and allow yourself to feel the emotions you have!</p>
    <p>Finally, the Women’s Center and the Mosaic Center will be holding a <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/themosaic/events/44241" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">community safe space</a> on Tuesday 9/27. Meet in the Mosaic. Affected communities and allies are encouraged to come!</p>

    <p><span><strong><em>Briefly describe your internship, co-op,  or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.</em></strong></span></p>
    <p><span>I worked as a Financial Leadership Program (FLP) intern in NYC for The Nielsen Company. My responsibilities included developing and implementing price table analyses for annual Pricing Guidelines review and updates for the Watch Business (National and Local TV). I used Excel to identify current fees, and variance to current price guidelines, to develop recommendations for pricing increase/re-benchmarking for all measurement services, Nielsen information and technology services. Toward the end of my internship, I presented a specific range of findings to the Chief Financial Officer of Nielsen, in order to introduce recommended pricing for some of Nielsen's local and national products.</span></p>

    <p><span><strong><em>Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.</em></strong></span></p>
    <p><span>I obtained this internship through the services of the UMBC Career Center and specifically, through the Fall 2015 UMBC Career Fair where I submitted my resume and found out a little bit more about the company. I went in for an on-campus interview the next day and interviewed with a Nielsen finance manager. Then, I was contacted for two additional interviews (conducted on the phone) with two HR representatives including the FLP program manager.  </span></p>
    <p><br></p>
    <p><span><strong><em>What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?</em></strong></span></p>
    <p><span>Brainstorming and formulating a methodology to analyze the Nielsen data and recommend pricing for a total of 12 Nielsen local and national products. </span></p>
    <p><br></p>
    <p><span><strong><em>How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?</em></strong></span></p>
    <p><span>My pricing recommendations were reviewed by Finance and Client Services leads and will be further discussed for business implementation in September. </span></p>
    <p><br></p>
    <p><span><strong><em>What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?</em></strong></span></p>
    <p><span>Nielsen really cares about getting to know you and your experiences. Show in the interview what you have gained from those experiences and communicate them effectively. Also, show that you are confident and proud of your accomplishments. </span></p>

    <Title>Your fall schedule settled, now consider Service-Learning!</Title>

          <div class="html-content"><div><div><div><p><span>Service-Learning at The Shriver Center has very active partnerships, which continue to grow.  Last year, the Service-Learning Team connected with 74 partners on and off campus through weekly service and intentional reflective activities.  Last year (FY16), through data collected through UMBCworks (Student Self Evaluations and Placement Evaluations), students reported:</span></p><p></p><ul><li>70% agreed that their ability to view their career expectations realistically increased as a result of their applied learning experience;</li><li>74% indicated that they applied their education to their applied learning experience;</li><li>80% indicated that their self-confidence increased as a direct result of their applied experience;</li><li>86% indicated that their ability to solve problems increased as a result of their applied learning experience;</li><li>86% agreed that participating in applied learning helped them to grow as a leader;</li><li>90% indicated that their awareness of civic responsibilities increased as a direct result of their applied experience;</li><li>93% recommend an internship/work/co-op-research/service placement to another student.</li></ul><br><span><div><span><br></span></div>This semester alone, we've added @ 10 partners to include Patterson Park Audobon Center, Meade Senior High School's AVID Program, and the Choice Program's Education Team at Ben Franklin High School. </span>Each year, we receive more requests from nonprofits and schools to host enthusiastic and talented UMBC students at their organizations.     <p>I really love queer media. I’ve probably watched most of the movies in the “Gay and Lesbian” category on Netflix, as long as they didn’t look too dull or exploitative. There are some really fantastic and challenging shows and movies available at the click of a button. Why am I so drawn to television shows with women kissing, to movies with actual trans actresses playing trans women? I know I’m not the only queer woman who revels in the opportunity to see a new lesbian drama. Why is this?</p>
    <p>Well, it all boils down to one thing: <strong>The need for</strong> <strong>representation. The queer community is constantly portrayed by the media through <a href="http://www.gurl.com/2015/08/18/offensive-gay-stereotypes-in-movies-media/#1" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">stereotypes</a> and <a href="http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/QueerAsTropes" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">tropes</a> that are incredibly harmful and inconsistent with the realities of our queer lives.</strong> This article from the queer- woman’s website Autostraddle recently went viral – because it listed <em>all 162 (and counting)</em> <a href="http://www.autostraddle.com/all-65-dead-lesbian-and-bisexual-characters-on-tv-and-how-they-died-312315/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">dead lesbian and bisexual women killed on television and how they died</a>.</p>
    <p>The post circulated widely using the hashtag “<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/buryyourgays?src=hash" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">bury your gays</a>,” which was created after a beloved lesbian character from <em>The 100</em> was killed off as a cheap plot device – a trope all too common in any media that portrays queer women. While I never really watched <em>The 100</em>, I understand what it feels like when a fan favorite lesbian meets an early demise.</p>
    <p>I remember the first time I watched <em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer</em> all the way through. I had the complete series box set growing up and watched<em> BtVS</em> religiously. I was heartbroken when <span><strong>(spoiler)</strong></span> Tara, one of two lesbians on that show, was killed off. She was shot by a stray bullet, and none of the magic in a supernatural show about vampires was used to bring her back.</p>
    <p>I was devastated.</p>
    <p>I had clung so hard to Willow and Tara’s relationship. I didn’t yet have the labels that I use today, but I knew that I liked girls. Tara, who I had identified with because she was shy and smart and kind of a dork. Tara, who kissed Willow and held her hand and called her “babe.”  She was killed, all as a plot device. It wouldn’t be the last time a character I loved, who also loved women, would be killed in a similar way.</p>

    <p>Positive representation really does matter. When queer shows and films are done in more humanizing ways, they allow queer people who watch to see a reflection of themselves in beloved and complex characters. <strong>It’s incredibly validating to see someone like you given substance and meaning beyond hegemonic perception of what it means to be LGBTQ.</strong> I want to see more characters like <a href="http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2015/05/28/orphan-black-star-lesbian-sex-scenes-arent-for-male-viewers/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Cosima from <em>Orphan Black,</em></a><em> </em>characters who are integral to the plot of their show, have flaws, and are also LGBTQ.</p>
    <p>Positive representation doesn’t stop there: There are so many intersecting identities that deserve more and better representation in media that are also commonly overlooked. People of color are rarely cast as anything other than “that one black friend” or “that perceived-as-white love interest.” The moment there are an array of dynamic characters of color on one show, it is labeled as “other” and often dismissed. When LGBTQ people of color<span> </span>do appear in media, writers are often careless when contending with the  multiple facets of their identities.</p>

    <p>Often writers don’t come equipped with the ability to write complex queer characters of color – especially when they do not identify alongside their characters. Take the example of <em><a href="http://www.essence.com/2016/06/24/orange-new-black-except-its-writers" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Orange Is the New Black</a></em>. 90% of the writers for the Netflix show<em> </em>are white women, and they write for queer women of color characters. Because there isn’t enough diverse representation on staff, important aspects of identity are left out or altered, letting down major characters and long-time fans. Don’t get me started with how they let down a certain fan favorite this past season…</p>
    <div><img src="https://womenscenteratumbc.files.wordpress.com/2016/09/oitnb-white-writers.jpg?w=562" alt="oitnb-white-writers" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"><p>For a show with so many women of color characters, there sure are a lot of white people in the writers’ room.</p></div>
    <p>Even with all of the negatives, there is still some very positive representation in queer media. Films like <em><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INOiiC7lIDU" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Mosquita Y Mari</a>,  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNdW9TzxGrk" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Boy Meets Girl</a> </em>and<em> <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEVuXWEBAP8" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Tangerine</a> </em>are all beautiful movies written by and/or starring queer individuals that explore LGBTQ characters genuinely. TV shows like <em><a href="http://moviepilot.com/posts/3954346" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Steven Universe</a>, <a href="http://www.slate.com/blogs/outward/2014/02/11/brooklyn_nine_nine_is_pro_gay_andy_samberg_show_sets_bar_for_post_doma_television.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Brooklyn 9-9</a>, </em>and <a href="http://www.autostraddle.com/greys-anatomy-says-goodbye-callie-torres-tvs-best-ever-bisexual-character-339681/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><em>Grey’s Anatomy</em></a> are also really great examples of good writing for queer characters. None of these characters are perfect people, and I wouldn’t want them to be. They are just more human, more three-dimensional, more interesting to watch.</p>

    <p><strong>Queer people live just as interesting and complicated lives as everyone else. We deserve to see these lives reflected in the media that we consume.</strong> I can’t wait to see how media evolves further and allows for more varied storylines and characters. As viewers, we should continue to be critical of what is and isn’t portrayed on the screen. One day I hope mainstream media will be more inclusive through  authentic representations<span> </span>of queer characters. For now, I say you should go check out some of those titles I mentioned. Continue to demand more from your favorite shows, and don’t settle for tropes.</p>

This year, GE recruiters will attend the </span><span>Fall Career Fair on</span><span> </span><span>September 28</span><span>th</span><span> and then return for the GE Aviation </span><span>interviews on October 5</span><span>th</span><span>.  The interviews will target </span><span>Freshmen and Sophomores </span><span>for engineering and manufacturing positions at GE Aviation. </span><div><span><br></span><span><span>GE Aviation is a great place to work with plenty of challenging roles available in a high technology business. Our co-ops perform real engineering work from the start. Younger students would have the chance to return to GE Aviation for future co-op assignments.     <div class="html-content"><span><p><span></span><span>Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing more that I love than being able to kick up my feet and binge watch <em>Scandal </em></span><span>on Netflix, but there comes a point where even I can’t stand listening to Olivia Pope and Fitzgerald Grant have the same argument over and over again. I find myself wanting to do something productive in my spare time, something that will kick my critical thinking skills into gear. If any of you have ever found yourself in the same position; internships, jobs, and volunteer experiences are perfect for you! They allow you to develop your professional skills, gain real-world experiences and help you explore your interests. Working in the field of your major or general interests can help you decide whether or not a specific career path is </span><span>something you want to pursue.    </span></p><p><span>To help you get started with your internship or job search, the UMBC Career Center has organized the Fall Career &amp; Internship Fair. This recruitment event is the largest fair UMBC hosts, with over one hundred thirty companies registered to attend! This is your chance to make a good first impression and show your potential employers what you have to offer them. You may be stressed or nervous about having to present yourself in front of so many different reputable organizations, but we’ve put together a list of ways to help you make the most out of the Career Fair:</span></p><ol><li><span>Get your <strong>resume</strong> reviewed! We can help you get your resume into its best shape so you can advertise yourself in the best way possible. Drop-in hours at the Career Center are 2-4 PM, Monday-Friday (2nd floor of the Math and Psychology building), and 6-8 PM Tuesday and Wednesday in the Library’s Writing Center. We also have extended hours on September 22nd, from 10 AM-12 PM, and 1-4 PM.</span></li><li><span>Check out who’s coming to the fair </span><a href="http://careers2.umbc.edu/calendar/fairs/fallcareerfair.php" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>here</span></a><span>. <strong>Research</strong> the employers and see who you’re interested in visiting. Make sure to check out their job descriptions and announcements! The best way to show an employer that you are interested in a position is showing that you took the time to research the company and job requirements. Plus, job descriptions and announcements can often tell you what specific characteristics an employer is looking for in an employee. By researching beforehand, you can plan how you can tailor your experience to fit those characteristics. </span></li><li><span>Create your <strong>30- second commercial</strong>. Not sure what that is? Find tips on how to make one </span><a href="http://careers.umbc.edu/students/network/networking101/30-second-commercial/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>here</span></a><span>. </span></li><li><span><strong>Dress to impress</strong>! Take a few extra minutes to plan out what your outfit for that day will be. Business attire is suggested. I find myself googling what “business formal” vs. “business casual” is every single time I have an interview, so here’s a </span><a href="http://careers.umbc.edu/students/interview/what-to-bring-what-to-wear/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>link</span></a><span> to help save you some time. </span></li></ol><span>For me, the best way to get rid of my nerves is to make sure that I know what I’m talking about. So, the biggest piece of advice I can give to you is to be prepared, and that goes for anything you do in life. </span></span></div>

  <Title>Women&#8217;s Center 25 Then vs. Now #4: Marketing and Publicizing Who We Are</Title>

We’re excited to share our important milestone with <a href="http://50.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC’s 50th Anniversary </a>and will be celebrating throughout the year with the rest of campus! We were inspired by Special Collections archival project <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts?tag=archives-gold" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC’s 50th</a> and decided to do our own digging into the Women’s Center archives. Over the course of the year, we’ll be sharing 25 “Then vs Now” archives to celebrate the origin and evolution of the Women’s Center at UMBC.</p>
    <p><strong>This week we’re featuring the marketing and publicity the Women’s Center has created and shared with the UMBC community over the past several years. </strong></p>
    <p>Before smart phones and Snapchat, there were actual hard copy brochures and flyers (pre-PhotoShop) to help spread the word about the Women’s Center. Here’s some examples!</p>

  <Title>Researcher of the Week: Nicholas Vaccaro</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>Meet Nick,<br>He is a Biochemistry major and a URA Scholar. He is a real proponent in developing future researchers. He advises, "If you are really interested in the work you are doing and want the project to succeed, then observing and looking into work that others have done in your field is a truly great thing to do. It will give you great insight not only on your own project, but also on the general knowledge associated with the field in which you are working." Nicholas would ultimately like to become a biomedical researcher to assist on developing cures and vaccines for infectious diseases. </p>
    <p>His research will explore the microscopic world of Nanoscience. Electrochemical aptamer-based (E-AB) sensors can be utilized to detect a multitude of different target molecules in a sample. Current methods, however, are limited to ensemble measurements of a large number of target molecules. Conversely, specific single molecule sensing at low detection limits represents a highly sensitive method of detection of analytes in a sample. In this project, I aim to detect Immunoglobulin E (IgE), a protein that is involved with the immune response in the human body, with specific single molecule sensitivity. </p><p>Read more about his research project here...</p></div>
