Intern of the Week: Hiba Zia for Graphic Design

<Tagline>Learn about Hiba's experience at the Federal Reserve Board!</Tagline>

Expected Graduation Year: May 2015

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research, or service-learning opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

Being an intern for the Office of Inspector General at the Federal Reserve Board for the summer was an outstanding experience and I was extremely heavy hearted that I was only there for the summer. Luckily, I landed an opportunity to be an intern for the year at the Board but for a different division. I am now interning at the Office of Chief Data Officer. What I love most about my internship are the people I encounter everyday. They have insightful advice and are always willing to help. Some of the assignments I complete include website implementation, branding and marketing, and also developing templates for reports and documents.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I obtained my internship by applying to every opportunity that was relative to my major.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I love that I work on varieties of projects. I enjoy coming into work not knowing what assignments I will work on. I also love the office side of my internship as opposed to working in a studio. Even though I take three trains and a shuttle to get to my building, I enjoy my commute I wouldn't trade it for anything.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another opportunity?

I have gained the experience of working as a graphic designer in the office environment. Other internships I have had, I worked from home or a studio.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I advise that you apply early and don't wait til last minute. The federal Reserve board is always looking for interns!

Debate: Ethics of brain-computer interface technology

What ethical problems might advances in brain-computer interface technology create?

That’s the question that will be debated Monday evening as part of the UMBC BioCOM Ethical Debates (B-Ethical) series co-sponsored by the Biology Council of Majors and Philosophers Anonymous.

The event will take place from 7:30pm to 9:00pm on Monday, March 2 in room 104 of the ITE building (lecture hall 7) at UMBC.

One team will be lead by Professor Richard Wilson, a member of UMBC’s Philosophy department with a focus on applied ethics. LThe other team is headed by Kavita Krishnaswamy, a Ph.D. student from UMBC’s Computer Science and Electrical Engineering department whose dissertation research is exploring how robotics can help increase autonomy in daily living for people with disabilities. Kavita, who has a severe physical disability herself, will participate via a Beam Smart Presence robot. Also on the team is CSEE Professor Tinoosh Mohsenin whose research includes deep learning to interpret high-resolution multichannel electroencephalography data.

Some details from the B-Ethical post:

“The field of Brain Computer Interface (BCI) research has led to the engineering of a device system that allows you to convert your thoughts into action by using your brain’s neural activity: think controlling a robotic arm via electrodes that are placed on a brain that controls the arm with its thoughts. This revolutionary field in neuroscience has given hope to those who are severely disabled including but not limited to those who suffer from blindness, paralysis, and other debilitative physical disabilities. Hence, computer-brain interface technology has the potential and power to do incredible good.

Some note, however, the importance of recognizing the possibility for ethical wrongdoing. One such ethical question surrounding this field is the possibility for social stratification as a result of barriers such as cost. If brain enhancement does become effective and ubiquitous, there is the possibility that pressure to enhance one’s brain in order to keep up with rising competition, might leave some unable to access this enhancement because of financial barriers. Hence, this will not only widen the gap in society between the rich and the poor, but become dangerous, creating a social strata in which an intellectual elite armed with thought-controlled weapons would government the people. One could think of an army with capabilities such as night vision eyes, fingers that can fire bullets, humans made immortal by copying their genetic material into more resilient hardware, these endless possibilities ascend into the world of sci-fi as they are scary.”

Making a Good First Impression

<Tagline>Susanna Campbell, Career Peer liaison to CNMS</Tagline>

Making a Good First Impression

The first impression is a lasting one. First impressions are important and can be a major factor in an employer’s decision to give you the job or internship. It can even affect relationships with your professors, co-workers, and supervisors.

Currently, I am applying to graduate school for the fall semester. Right now I am at the interviewing stage. The first impression is key for me right now. So This is what I have learned.

In order to make a good first impression you should connect with the person. You can make that connection by being yourself, having good eye-contact, and by showing interest.

As people, we have a remarkable ability to tell if somebody is being honest and genuine. Often, when I exaggerate my experience or I am too shy to admit my expertise, I find that I am unable to connect with the person I am speaking too. You will connect the most with the person by being candid about your experiences. If you are honest about areas of improvement, the employer or professor may take a personal investment in helping you.

Additionally, you can connect with somebody with good eye-contact. Eye-contact shows confidence and interest. Too much eye-contact can be intimidating; but, the right amount of eye contact will show that you are engaged in the conversation and also that you are confident in your abilities.

My last suggestion is to show genuine interest in the person you are meeting and the opportunity in front of you. You can ask the person about themselves and how they got to the position they are in today. If you are being offered an opportunity, ask questions to show that you are invested.

You do not have to impress an employer, internship coordinator, professor or a graduate school administrator by exaggerating your accomplishments or claiming to have qualities that you do not. Connect with your interviewer by being genuine and by being interested in the opportunity in front of you.

Researcher of the Week: Saiah Yates

  <Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

Meet Saiah,

She is a Biological Sciences major, a URA Scholar and a MARC U*Star Scholar. Her future goal is to become a physical therapist and scientist. She like the flexibility a DPT/PhD degree offers so she would like to take time to teach, practice, and conduct research related to physical therapy one day.

How did you find your mentor for your research project?

I looked on the biological sciences website and e-mailed the professors who had research most closely related to my interest. Dr. Leips emailed back about an interview and I proceeded to visit the lab. Once I expressed interest, he checked for lab space and accepted me as a student.

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?

I started on an ecology project in my lab under the graduate student Chia-Hua, and though this was an awesome experience. I switched projects after my first full year in the lab. I switched to a project more so related to the medical field because of my aim to earn a DPT/PhD degree.

Is this your first independent research project?

No, I have worked on independent research at my past two summer internships, however this was my first time being very hands on with experimental design, guided by Dr. Leips and Mariann G.

Do you get course credit for this work?

Yes, I get course credit for lab participation.

How much time do you put into it?

From week to week the time varies, but I would say an average of ten hours a week.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?

One of the older students in my lab received it the year before me and gave a brief description of what it entailed. Dr. Leips also mentioned that it would be a good opportunity.

What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA?

I was a junior biology major with reasonable grades.

Was the application difficult to do?

The application was not difficult it just required thought.

How much did your mentor help you with the application?

My mentor reviewed my application for statement accuracy and typos.

What has been the hardest part about your research?

The hardest part about my research was the experimental design (figuring out how to test certain variables).

What was the most unexpected thing?

The most unexpected thing was the awesome group of people I had the chance to work with while doing the project and the extensive amount of research skills I practiced (ex. Writing, presenting, data analysis, bench work).

How does your research relate to your work in other classes?

Recently, I had a class that was very focused on learning how to read papers, present work, write scientific papers, and construct experiments. Many upper level biology classes center around skills that will benefit a person who wants to be successful in the research world. Therefore having previous research experiences aids students by better preparing them to be able to think differently when it comes to problem solving.

What else are you involved in on campus?

I am also involved in UMBC Varsity cheer, and from time to time I like going to BSU and ASA meetings and activities. I am also involved in scholarship programs that support research (ex. Meyerhoff/MARC/HHMI).

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

I would advise students to start looking for opportunities in labs on campus as early in their UMBC career as possible. Also I would encourage people to keep an open mind when it comes to research topics because there are so many topics in science to experience and an unexpected passion may be found when trying new types of research.

Read her abstract here...
