Researcher of the Week: Nina Beri

 <Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

Meet Nina...

She is a Biological Sciences and a URA Scholar. She is also a member of Alpha Sigma Kappa, Women in Technical Studies, and a member of "UMBC Rockets and More".

How did you find your mentor for year research?

I have been an undergraduate student researcher in Dr. Gardner’s lab since Fall 2013.

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?

When I joined this lab, I was excited to be able to contribute to the development of biofuels as an alternative energy source. The project that I am working on contributes directly to research into biofuels. It focuses on developing the Cellvibrio japonicus bacteria into a consolidated bioprocessor, an organism that can both digest tough cellulosic plant mass and produce fatty acids, which can be used to create biodiesel and other valuable chemical products.

Is this your first independent research project?

Yes, this is my first independent research project.

Do you get course credit for this work?

I do get course credit for this work, as it counts as one of my upper-level Biology lab courses.

How much time do you put into it?

During the school year, I put about 10 hours a week into the project, and during the summer I put around 25 hours a week into the project.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?

My mentor, Dr. Gardner, encouraged me to apply for the URA.

What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA?

Before applying for the URA, I had completed all of the Biology core courses, as well as various upper-level Biology courses, including 306L, a lab course that introduces core concepts of molecular biology, and a semester of research in the Gardner lab. I had also begun taking Bio 434 and 414, two classes that focus on analysis of scientific research papers.

Was the application difficult to do?

The application was very straightforward.

How much did your mentor help you with the application?

My mentor provided valuable critiques for each draft of the application I wrote.

What has been the hardest part about your research?

The hardest part about the research is being able to accurately write or talk about it!

How does your research relate to your work in other classes?

I have found that having a foundation of basic laboratory skills makes understanding a wide range of biological concepts much easier, since research papers and discoveries in the field are usually based on work in a laboratory. Having an understanding of how one experiment can lead to a certain result makes it easy to extrapolate and imagine how a similar experiment could lead to another discovery – or to find fault in the methods used or the way the paper was written. The perspective I have gained from working in the lab helps me to appreciate scientific discoveries in a deeper way.

What else are you involved in on campus?

I am a member of "Alpha Sigma Kappa, Women in Technical Studies", and a member of "UMBC Rockets and More".

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Be persistent! There are so many wonderful professors around campus who conduct exciting research, so if you are interested in getting involved in research, the best option is to become familiar with the work of several professors and reach out to them to inquire about doing research in their lab. You can learn so much from doing research that you would never learn in a classroom, and you will be able to work more independently in the lab than you would in a formal classroom setting.

What are your career goals?

I would like to work in a laboratory for a year or so after graduating before deciding on an area of focus and applying to graduate school.

Resume Tips for the Upcoming Career Fair

<Tagline>Susanna Campbell, Career Peer Liaison to CNMS</Tagline>

At the Fall Career Fair next week you are going to need a resume. You will probably find a company that will want to give YOU an internship or a job. The first thing they might ask you for is your resume. If you don’t have your resume updated, don’t panic. I have some tips on how you can show your already impressive accomplishments.

Your resume gives you 30 seconds to grab the reviewer’s attention and get into the yes pile. You might be thinking: “That sounds impossible!”

It’s not impossible. There are actually a few easy steps that you can take that will place your resume in the YES pile.

STEP 1: Create a list of all relevant coursework, projects, work/volunteer experiences, and organizations in which you have participated. All of these things add significant value to your resume.

STEP 2: Identify the important skills, achievements, and interests that you want to highlight on your resume.

STEP 3: Develop descriptive phrases for your experiences. Qualify and Quantify what you accomplished on a daily basis. Develop statements like these for your course projects also. Start these phrases with strong action verbs.

STEP 4: Put your resume into an organized format. Keep your formatting clear and consistent throughout the document. Your font can be between 10.5 and 12pt. and margins can be between .5 and 1 inch.

STEP 5: Upload your resume to UMBCworks for review. Then come to drop-in hours or schedule an appointment with your career adviser.

Here are some additional Do’s and Don’t’s of resume writing:

Do:

Tailor your resume for each position you are applying for.

Use specific words and phrases from the job description that you are applying for.

List the most important and related experiences first and when items are dated list them in reverse chronological order.

Expand on professional, volunteer, research, and classroom experiences to show your transferable skills.

Don’t:

Use templates and tables

Over-generalize your skill set

Mislead employers about your skills, GPA, or abilities

Utilize long or general objective statements

Go over two pages (The second page will most likely not be read by the employer).

The resume is not the only thing employers at the Fall Career Fair will be looking for. Here are some tips for Job Fair Etiquette.

My last tip to prepare for this Career Fair is to start researching the employers who will be in attendance now. You can find the list at the bottom of the page HERE. Identify what skills you have that these companies need and make sure those skills are highlighted on your resume.

The Career Center has a lot more tips to resume writing. Check out the UMBC Career Guide for resume tips specific to UMBC students! If you are having trouble with starting your resume, have additional questions, or want to get your resume approved the Career Center has drop-in hours from 2 – 4pm Monday – Friday at the Career Center in Math/Psych 212, and 6 – 8pm Tuesday and Wednesday in the Library at the Writing Center.

hackUMBC ’14 concludes

Last weekend, over 170 college and high school students converged upon UMBC for the second hackUMBC hackathon. This free event, spanning 24 continuous hours, brought students together to create, make, or otherwise “hack” together new technology projects, either individually or as a team. As with many hackathons, there was no limit to the type of technology students could work on — hackUMBC 2014 projects ranged from developing mobile apps and assistive/wearable technologies to applied virtual reality representations of cyberspace, a ‘smart’ autonomous tank, and reverse-engineering (and then porting to Linux) the Myo command protocol. The sky was the limit in terms of ideas and skill levels — indeed, many attendees were first-time “hackers” looking to learn programming or engineering concepts in an inclusive and fun environment.

Following opening ceremonies and brief remarks by the sponsors and UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski, participants took over the second floor ITE classrooms Saturday-into-Sunday before moving into the UC Ballroom to showcase their products before a panel of judges. Prizes were awarded for the most innovative, polished, complex, and useful ideas/technologies.

hackUMBC 2014 was well-supported by corporate sponsors, including Raytheon, Microsoft, Northrop Grumman, MITRE, and ClearEdge Solutions, among others. Campus partners included the Alex Brown Center for Enterpreneurship and the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. Additional support, participant encouragement, and round-the-clock motivational energy was provided by Mike Swift, chairman of Major League Hacking.

hackUMBC was organized and run by Michael Bishoff (Junior, CMPE), Randi Williams (Junior, CMPE), and Minhaz Mahmud (Senior, CMSC). CSEE’s Dr. Rick Forno serves as faculty advisor.

Special thanks to the UMBC volunteer judges Dr. Charles Nicholas, Shawn Lupoli, Geoff Weiss, and the many student volunteers who assisted in making the event a success.
