Tip of the Week: How to Ask Killer Job Interview Questions

  <Tagline>From TheSavvyIntern - Posted by Levo League</Tagline>

As the interview winds down, the interviewer asks, “Do you have any questions for me?”

Because you feel unprepared, perhaps because you don’t want to waste
the interviewer’s time, or maybe because you’re still nervous… you say
    “no”.

Ouch.

According to Jennifer McGarr, director of professional development at
the University of Missouri School of Law, failing to strategically ask
questions that demonstrate your value and curiosity about the company
and role is a big mistake.

“If you don’t ask the right questions,” she says, “you come across as
not being very interested in the position, or you seem like the kind of
person who just doesn’t have a lot of intellectual curiosity. To me,
    it’s a wasted opportunity.”

Scoring Points

Recent University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate, Caroline Radaj,
likes to use her question time to highlight information she wanted to
convey in the interview. “I ask about the hiring timeline and what they
seek in a candidate, Radaj, 23, says. “That way, if you think you fit
something they mention and you weren’t given the opportunity to talk
    about that part, you can.”

Like Radaj, McGarr thinks that asking questions is another chance to promote yourself.

“There are ways you can use that time when you ask interview
questions so you can score points in your favor for getting that job,”
McGarr says. “You can bring up anything you wanted to come out during
the interview that didn’t come out. So if you wanted to have the chance
to talk about a judicial clerkship you did over the summer, and they
didn’t ask you about it at all, under the guise of asking a question,
you can say, ‘When I did my judicial clerkship last summer, I noticed
some situation in a case we reviewed. Is that something you’ve
    experienced in your practice area?’”

That gives the interviewer a chance to talk about herself and connect
with the interviewee, McGarr says. The important thing is to form
questions in a way that highlight relevant experience while showing your
interest in the interviewer and her company.

Bringing up shared connections is another way to maximize the
question period of the interview. If you know, for example, that your
interviewer went to your college, asking her about that would be
    appropriate.

Get Personal

McGarr urges prospective hires to reword stock questions in a way
that make the interviewer feel like the question was posed for her
    specifically.

“For a while I had a bunch of students during mock interviews asking,
‘What do you have on your desk right now?’ You can still ask a question
about what the current projects the interviewer is working on without
having that canned, ‘I read this in a book’ feel to it,” McGarr says.

Questions like that don’t feel specific or genuine to the person
interviewing you, McGarr says. She instead suggests finding out about a
current project the interviewer is working on and asking about the
    status of the project.

“You’ve impressed him because he feels like you’re asking
specifically about him,” McGarr says. “It’s shows you’ve researched the
company, the interviewer, and are genuinely interested in him or her.
It’s the same exact question as what’s on your desk right now, but it
doesn’t sound like a stock question made for anyone.”

What Not to Ask

During the initial interview, don’t ask about pay or benefits.

“One piece of feedback I’ve had recently from employers is that
everybody knows this current job market is tough,” McGarr said. “In
general, it’s a bad idea to ask about how many hours you have to work,
how much you’re going to get paid, how much vacation time you’re going
to get, or how much maternity leave they offer. To the employer, it
sounds like before you’ve even been offered the job you’re asking for
    time off or more money.”

McGarr thinks it’s more prudent to let the interviewer bring it up.
If you’ve been offered a position, then it’s appropriate to bring up the
     issue.

But during the interview the important thing is to demonstrate that
you’ve done your homework about the company, McGarr says. There are safe
questions you can ask: anything about what it’s like to work at the
company or how assignments are doled out are in-bounds. However, if you
can easily get your answer off the web, don’t ask the question.

“Then you just look lazy,” she says.

“You want the questions to demonstrate that you’ve read the
stuff on the website, but then you’ve thought, ‘Hmmm, that raises more
    questions for me.’”

Own the interview. Promote yourself, your values and your curiosity. Ask good questions, at every job interview!

Intern of the Week: Kyle Baker for Graphic Design

  <Tagline>Learn about Kyle’s experience at the FHFA!</Tagline>

Name: Kyle Baker

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Federdal Housing Finance Agency

Major(s)/Minor(s): Graphic Design/Media Communication Studies

Expected Graduation Year: 2016

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research, or service- learning opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

As an intern for the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) I specifically worked for the Office of Congressional Affairs and Communications (OCAC). For my duration there I worked under the guidance of my supervisor assisting and in some cases even speerheading a series of informational FHFA video projects that were used both internally and externally. The title of one of the videos was called “FHFA: Strengthening Today and Securing Tomorrow.” This video was to be used for external general audiences looking to better understand what FHFA does and how it impacts them.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I enjoyed the professional nature of the position. It was my first time ever working a federal government job before but it was definitely an experience that was quite unique.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another opportunity?

Federal Government experience. Trust me when I say, that it is without question a different breed of animal when it comes to things such as professionalism.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Never feel intimidated by whatever nature of position you are taking on nor feel that you don't have enough experience to perform well.

How do you see your experience as meaningful? This might involve skills you’ve gained, information you’ve learned, mentors you’ve connected with, or projects you’ve completed.

Honestly, if I had to describe this position in two words I would say "Rewardingly Challenging." When I was hired my supervisor explained that although I was an intern I shouldn't didn't expect the bulk of my duties to be making copies, taking phone calls or doing anything menial like that can typically come with the territory of being an intern but you don't really get any true experience from. I would be receiving the same caliber of workload and assignments was told from day one that I would be receiving the same caliber of workload and assignments that anyone on their actual staff would be required to complete as well be held to their same standard of performance. So although it was at times challenging, it was definitely the type of challenging that you wanted because you knew you were truly getting something out of it.

Please provide a short quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / the internship placement process / the Shriver Center:

To requote what I said in a previous question mine would simply be the following:

Honestly, if I had to describe this position in two words I would say "Rewardingly Challenging. Because although at times it was challenging, it was definitely the type of challenging that you wanted because you knew you were truly getting something out of it."

Researcher of the Week: Ibinabo Feddy-Inimgba

  <Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

What research have you been doing this summer?
I have been working on transcription of the 5’ untranslated region of the Moloney Murine Leukemia Virus (MLV) genome in the structural biology lab of Dr. Michael F. Summers.

How did you find out about this opportunity?
I got this opportunity by emailing Dr. Summers and asking for a position in his lab and I was interviewed by him. There was no formal application process.

Who did you work with on this project?
I work with Dr. Summers, Deborah Girma (my grad student mentor), and Alex Emmanuelli, a biochemistry senior.

Was this your first independent research project?
No it’s my second involvement in research.

Do you get course credit for this work or get paid? How much time do you put into it?
During the summer I put in 40 hours a week but during the school year I will be working 8-10 hours weekly. This was a paid position.

What academic background did you have before you started?
I had finished two years of general and organic chemistry as well as three of the four biology courses required for biochemistry majors.

How did you learn what you needed to know to be successful in this summer project?
The project involved a lot of hands-on learning. I received on-the-job training from my graduate student.

What has been the hardest part about your work this summer?
The initial learning curve period; the time it took for me to get used to working in this lab.

What was the most unexpected thing?
The coolest thing about my lab is the willingness to teach and be taught displayed by everyone. We have a great working environment.

How does this research experience relate to your course work?
It is a biochemistry lab and I am a biochemistry major so there is perfect correlation between research and coursework.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?
Apply quickly and apply early. Email professors asking about positions in their labs, talk to friends who are currently in labs asking if there are openings. Read up on the work done by the researchers at UMBC and apply to whatever interest you. If you have the chance to interview, prepare for it and be confident.

What are your career goals?
I plan to go to medical school and get an MD/PhD after my time at UMBC

What else are you involved in on campus?
I work with the SGA, I’m a member of UMBC National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH), I’m a member of Minority Association of Premedical Students, (MAPS), and I’m involved with Bethel Campus Fellowship.
