Summer STEM Opportunity, U.S. Department of Energy

  <Tagline>Minority and Female Students Encouraged to Apply!</Tagline>

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF), sponsored by the U.S.
    Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy, is a 10-week summer internship program that provides opportunities to students who are pursuing degrees in science, technology (IT), engineering, or mathematics (STEM majors). The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for minority and female students in these fields, but all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply. Candidates who are selected will have the opportunity to work on focused research projects
    consistent with the mission of the Office of Fossil Energy.

During the 10 weeks, students will work at one of several locations.
     At the conclusion of the internship, students will attend a "Technical
    Forum" where they will present their research project and tour several
    technical sites located nearby (the location of the technical forum
    changes every year).

Candidates will receive a paid stipend during the program, in
    addition to approved transportation expenses to and from the internship
    site and technical forum location. The MLEF program allows students to
    gain valuable experience in DOE/FE mission-related research programs,
    and offers an "inside view" of federal employment which encourages
    students to consider future opportunities within the Department of
    Energy.

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the program, students must:

Be 18 years of age;

Be a citizen of the United States;

Be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university (sophomore year or higher); and

Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

MLEF: A Paid Internship Opportunity
Students will be paid:

A weekly stipend of $600 for undergraduate students;

A weekly stipend of $750 for Master's students;

A weekly stipend of $850 for Doctoral and Post-Doctoral students;

Approved travel costs to and from the host site; and

Approved travel costs to the Technical Forum for presentations and awards.

    <Tagline>Deadline to Apply: 2/5/13</Tagline>

GE employees worldwide are dedicated to turning imaginative ideas into leading products and services that help solve some of the world's toughest problems. As a co-op you will gain hands-on experience while working on challenging projects that contribute to the company's growth while learning from some of the brightest minds in the business.

GE is one of the largest manufacturers of major appliances in the world. Since 1907, we have been introducing advanced appliances to improve peoples' lives. We're continuing that legacy today with energy conserving innovations like the Advantium oven, the Harmony clothes care system, and more. GE set aggressive targets to improve the energy efficiency of Company operations and reduce the Company's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Today, GE offers nearly 400 products from refrigerators to cooking appliances to dryers that meet ENERGY STAR standards. Our theory- less energy, less water, better results.

Our program offers students the opportunity to gain experience and develop skills by working directly on the engineering teams and are expected to be a major contributor to those teams. Our program is designed as a mentoring opportunity where you are aligned with an individual assignment leader who will help set your specific goals, deliverables and expectations throughout your rotation.

Students who excel in our co-op program are given the opportunity to interview for full time opportunities through a Leadership Development Program. This is a 2 year program committed to growing our entry level, high potential employees who possess a passion for engineering, technical excellence and business skills by accelerating their development through technical training, leadership training and rotational assignments within challenging new product introductions, product development and innovative cost take out projects.

Position Description:
Co-ops joining our team have opportunities to complete innovative technical assignments in a variety of product areas including refrigeration, washer systems and cooking products. Our co-ops get to work on some of the newest innovations that will impact our environment. "Ecomagination" is our company-wide commitment to imagine and build innovative solutions that benefit our consumers and society at large. Some of these Eco-friendly products that our co-ops have contributed to are the GE Profile Harmony laundry pair, which delivers energy and water savings using a HydroMotion wash. If every U.S. household owning a washer not qualified ENERGY STAR were to replace it with a GE Profile Harmony washer, we could save enough water each year to fill nearly 400,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Plus our new refrigerators with ClimateKeeper2 technology, which keeps food garden-fresh longer. Refrigerators with FrostGuard defrost 20 percent less than conventional units, keeping frozen foods at their best. The system, working independently, uses a dual evaporator system to provide the best environment for fresh and frozen food. The decrease in greenhouse gas emissions over the life of all the GE ENERGY STAR -qualified refrigerators that were sold in 2005 is equivalent to eliminating more than 71,000 cars from U.S. roads for an entire year. The benefits of this experience extend beyond the exciting work assignments and competitive wages. We value development and offer several training opportunities to enhance students' technical and professional development including, communication skills and resume writing. Our co-ops participate on committees of their peers that offer opportunities to network with the leaders of the company. The committees perform many community service activities such as mentoring/tutoring elementary students. The co-ops have many social events both in and out of work.
Researcher of the Week: Monica Berron

  <Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

    What research did you complete last summer?
Last summer, I completed a 10-week research project at Iowa State University’s Virtual Reality Application Center (VRAC). My team’s project contributed to their established Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) program. We experimented with game devices utilizing pre-designed software called ISIS. ISIS is a computer program, which uses medical data to view body parts in 3D volumes. Our team connected the Microsoft Kinect to ISIS successfully and user studies are going to be done to see what results from viewing ISIS hands-free. Is it more accurate, efficient or user-friendly than other previously studied game devices?

How did you find out about this opportunity? Was there a formal application process?
I co-taught a Y-seminar last fall and Janet McGlynn gave a presentation on undergraduate research to our students. I joined the group on myUMBC and received emails about REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) application deadlines. I found two schools that wanted my background. I only applied to one, Iowa State, which I later discovered is a world-class graduate program.

The process required references, essays, and an application, but was not particularly formal. I was very honest about my interests. The day I heard from both of my mentors that they had not been called, when I was so sure I was not going to be accepted, I received an email that I had been chosen for the program.

Who did you work with on this project?
The lead of my project was Dr. Eliot Winer. He served as great coach and mentor for our team. Team members included my two undergraduate teammates, a post-doc, and a current HCI graduate student.

Was this your first independent research project?
This was my first time doing formal academic research.

Do you get course credit for this work or get paid?
I pursued the research program to learn about graduate school first-hand. I received a stipend for my work, housing, meals, and compensation for travel. The coordinators and VRAC team were very accommodating and allowed me to work for them without financial difficulty.

How much time do you put into it?
I worked 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. There were some days my team came in early and left late. The first few weeks we additionally completed courses in psychology, ethics, research, user studies, Heuristics, C++, 3D modeling, and more.

Many activities were scheduled for our professional development including luncheon presentations with professors on their research as well as day trips to prospective employers like John Deere and Principal Financial.

What academic background did you have before you started?
My academic background consisted of critical media skills, technical writing, and basic computer programming. I was chosen more for my work ethic than the brief coding background. No previous experience was required and many of the other REU students had no computer background. My fellow undergraduate peers were from all over the country with backgrounds in education, graphic design, theatre, mathematics, and neuropsychology.

HCI is about solving real-world problems with technology as an application, so interdisciplinary teams are required. I met professors doing work for the U.S. military, U.S. Census Bureau, John Deere, and Boeing. Other areas of study included mass-produced clothing, designing educational programs for children with autism, and creating apps to educate young women in college about reproductive health.

How did you learn what you needed to know to be successful in this summer project?

The archiving I completed for the Alumni Association two summers ago developed my interest in research and definitely played a pivotal role in preparing me for lengthy research.
