Intern of the Week: Christian Kalil at Penn State University

    <Tagline>Learn more about Christian's summer experience!</Tagline>

          Christian Kalil
Research Intern at Applied Research Lab Pennsylvania State University in State College, PA
Major(s)/Minor(s): Computer Engineering

Briefly describe your research position, including your day-to-day tasks and responsibilities.

It
was my responsibility to document the working order of particular
equipment used in oceanic acoustical analysis. I worked on understanding
and troubleshooting CTD sensors which were used to take real time
conductivity, temperature, and depth readings from the ocean whilst
being dragged behind a vessel. The data acquired would serve to help
understand how sound travels through the ocean. My day-to-day tasks
included sensor testing in ambient air to determine the responsiveness
of the sensors. I collected data from the sensors to determine
modulation schemes of data transfer in order to fully understand how
sensors operate. With this information, I then tested unresponsive
sensors for possible data transfer miscommunications.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company and what have you found most challenging?

I
greatly enjoyed learning material far beyond my current schooling. This
too was the most challenging part as I didn’t quite understand the
problem at hand when I first started working. It took some time and even
self-issued homework to understand the material necessary to solve the
modulation schemes of the sensors. I enjoyed a great deal of trial and
error, all the while learning from my mistakes. It was challenging but
          fun.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another summer activity?

It
has been my goal to attend graduate school, and earn a Ph.D in
electrical engineering. I was always afraid of having trouble picking a
research project for the degree. However, this experience has put me in
contact with a lot of graduate students whom I have had the pleasure of
working alongside. They were very open about their experiences and how
they have progressed since receiving their undergraduate degrees. It was
amazing to talk to them and hear that they had the same concerns as I
have, and that everything turned out well. I would never have gotten
such peace of mind doing anything else this summer.

How do you
see your summer work as meaningful? Has it given you a chance to work
on issues or with communities that matter to you?

My work
will help the lab continue researching underwater acoustics, a field
with many applications. Most commonly the research is used in SONAR and
navigating and mapping underwater environments. It also has personal
meaning to me as I was able to work with a lot of other students with
goals and interests similar to mine. I was also able to interact with
students of other majors working on worthwhile endeavors that I found
interesting. It was great to work with the large research community that
           exists at Penn State.

How has your summer experience shaped the way you think about your power to impact the world?

My
mentor is great! He helped me see that I have the power to impact the
world. As only an undergrad with a lot more classes to take, I lacked
the necessary background to fully understand the project I was working
on. He didn’t directly help me understand the material; instead, he
helped me to learn the material on my own. Despite the bumpy start, my
mentor showed me a trust only granted to an expert. This greatly boosted
my confidence from that of a lowly undergrad, to that of an
accomplished researcher. I won’t soon forget what I am capable of, and
will continue to achieve my goals.

Researcher of the Week: Jeffrey Boyd

  <Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

What research have you been doing this summer?
This summer I have been working on a project to make fashion more accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired. One approach to this is to use an iPhone app called VizWiz (developed at the Univ. of Rochester), which allows visually impaired users to take a picture of something, ask a question about it, and then have people on the Internet answer their questions. We just launched a six-month study where pa rticipants will ask questions about their clothes and get responses from a pool of handpicked volunteers. They can ask a mix of objective and subjective questions, with everything ranging from, “What color is this shirt,” to questions like, “Do you think these two items work well together? Can you offer me any pairing suggestions?”

How did you find out about this opportunity? Was there a formal application process?
I approached one of my professors about my interests in Human-centered Computing (one of the graduate programs available here in the Information Systems department). The professor suggested this project. I initially started out by helping a Ph.D. student researching a smart chair during the spring 2012 semester, and was offered the opportunity to come onboard for the summer to work on other projects in the lab.

Who did you work with on this project?
The primary investigator for the VizWiz trial is Michele Burton, a Ph.D. student studying accessible fashion. I worked closely with her and with our advisor, Dr. Amy Hurst, with whom I had worked during the previous semester. Also on our team was another undergrad from Washington State University, Vancouver.

Do you get course credit for this work or get paid? How much time do you put into it?
You can do both, actually. If there were more time (I am concurrently enrolled in an accelerated summer course, so my free time is somewhat limited) we would have added on an credit-bearing component of the internship where I would be learning iOS development and programming. That portion wasn’t possible this summer, but it is still a paid internship. On average, I work about 20 hours each week in the lab.

What academic background did you have before you started?
I am a senior Information Systems major. Before coming to UMBC, I was enrolled in the Information Systems Security program at Anne Arundel Community College. When I started in the lab, I had only just finished my first “Fundamentals of Human-Computer Interactions (HCI)” course. That is to say, not a lot of my academic experience directly related to the projects I worked on this summer.

How did you learn what you needed to know to be successful in this summer project?
I think it was a combination of prior work experience, coursework training, and my natural curiosity. For the past two summers, I held an internship at Legg Mason Capital Management in their technology department. I brought some of that systems administration knowledge with me to the lab. The knowledge of HCI processes that I gained in class also helped me to better understand the type of research that goes on in this field (and the research that I would later be working on.)

The one thing that helped me most to be successful this summer was a willingness to diversify. I naturally have a lot of varied interests, and those things came in handy when my labmates and I needed to do ‘non-science-y’ things like producing two tutorial and demonstrational videos – projects which incorporated my knowledge of lighting, videography, and photography.

What was the most unexpected thing?
I really didn’t expect the time to fly by so quickly! It seems like only yesterday the other undergrads and I were meeting for the first time, and already we are only a week away from the end of our time together. I thought that it would feel more like work, but this whole experience has been really enjoyable.

What has been the hardest part about your work this summer?
Besides adjusting to a new commute, I’d say the hardest thing was probably figuring out the right amount of attention to devote to each task. I have a tendency to become somewhat myopic when I’m focusing on a task, and in the lab I got involved in a number of different areas (exploratory projects, data coding and analysis, audio-visual projects, and systems administration, to name just a few). So, figuring out how to strike the right balance between all these things was something of a welcome challenge for me this summer.

How does this research experience relate to your course work?
Experience leading and working with user studies is extremely useful to Human-centered Computing prospects. It is helpful for those with plans to go to graduate school and also aids in drawing practical connections between the theories taught in classes and the real-world concepts people use in the industry every day.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research or taking on internships?
Absolutely, do it. I cannot stress enough how much easier it is taking classes once you have real-world experiences to relate the endless PowerPoint slides and those dry, wearisome book chapters to. While research may not be right for everyone, I would definitely encourage undergrads to find an internship somewhere. For any student in the tech field, nothing stands out to potential employers (or grad schools) more than practical, applicable work experience.

What else are you involved in on campus?
I’m a staff photographer and contributing writer at The Retriever Weekly. I also work for the Office of Residential Life and am a member of the UMBC Gospel Choir.

Baltimore Health Dept, Youth Violence Prevention Internships

<Tagline>Intern with the Office of Youth Violence Prevention</Tagline>

    Overview

Baltimore City
Health Department (BCHD) established the Office of Youth Violence
Prevention (OYVP) in 2002. OYVP's mission is to combat the epidemic of
violence among Baltimore's young people through innovative public health
     programming and policy initiatives.

OYVP collaborates
with governmental and community partners to facilitate services not
only for youth served by OYVP programs but also to implement strategies
that improve service access for youth of similar backgrounds. OYVP is a
part of the Baltimore City Violence Reduction Plan which aims to reduce
violent crime and strengthen public trust through a three-pronged
approach of Targeted Enforcement, Community Engagement and Building
Strong Partnerships. OYVP operates three prevention programs: Safe
Streets Baltimore, Operation Safe Kids, and Dating Matters.

Safe Streets Baltimore,
the highly successful, evidence-based initiative created by the School
of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Safe Streets
aims to reduce the incidence of violence, change community norms,
provide alternatives to violence, and increase the perceived risks and
costs of involvement in violence. This is done through the five core
components of the model: community mobilization, outreach, public
education, faith-based leader involvement, and criminal justice
participation. Outreach and high-risk conflict mediation are, together,
perhaps the most important aspects of Safe Streets. Safe Streets depends
heavily on a strong public education campaign to instill in people the
message that shootings and violence are not acceptable. Finally, it
calls for the strengthening of communities so they have the capacity to
exercise informal social control and respond to issues that affect them.
The intervention targets high-risk Baltimore City youth aged 14 to 25
years, through outreach and service connection, and the community as a
whole, through a media campaign and community mobilization. Progress
towards goals will be measured through reductions in shootings.

Operation Safe Kids
is a collaboration between BCHD, Department of Juvenile Services (DJS)
and other State and City agencies to provide intensive community-based
case management and monitoring to approximately 370 juvenile offenders
annually ages 10-20. OSK is merged with DJS's Violence Prevention
Initiative to serve youth identified as highest risk for becoming
perpetrators or victims of violence. Fifteen Youth Development
Technicians (YDTs) visit each youth twice and their guardian once on a
weekly basis to provide informal counseling, improve probation
compliance, and connect youth and families to services. Two Licensed
Clinical Social Workers provide clinical oversight to cases, perform
    initial assessments, and supervise YDTs.

Dating Matters was
developed as a comprehensive public health approach to the primary
prevention of teen dating violence. It has been developed based on best
available science and practice, and utilizes a combination of
evidence-informed and evidence-based strategies. Safe Dates, the parent
curricula, is evidence-based and is designed to equip parents with
skills to communicate with their child about dating violence and use
positive parenting skills. Parent programs target the following risk
factors: harsh parenting, low parental monitoring, negative parent-child
interactions, and witnessing violence in the home. Dating Matters, the
student curricula, is an evidence-informed curricula, developed for
this initiative, takes into account best practices in prevention, a
developmental conceptualization of youth relationships, and are
informed by other evidence-based youth health curricula. Each component
was selected for specific purpose and reinforces messages by giving
complementary skills to youth, their peers, parents, and educators, and
    supports these skills with policy.

Internship

The internship
opportunity with the Office of Youth Violence Prevention is an
opportunity to obtain knowledge about youth violence prevention programs
and resources in Baltimore City as well as improve professional
    development skills.

Tasks would include:

Working with Directors of youth violence prevention programs to develop, organize and coordinator program activities

Researching community resources available for program use

Working on special projects that improve program productivity and/or efficiency

Promoting and providing information to the community regarding program activities and resources

Assisting in the formulation of data collection methodology

Assisting with
collecting, compiling and reviewing data and statistics on the programs
for use in proposals, presentations and recommendations

The Office
of Youth Violence Prevention is seeking an individual who has an
interest in working with youth violence prevention programs. Qualified
candidates for the internship would be self-starters, well organized and
     flexible.

Internship hours
would be during the regular work week, Monday - Friday. Internship
schedule would be based on the selected candidate's availability.

TO APPLY, submit a cover letter and resume to Bmoreyvp@baltimorecity.gov
by Friday, December 14th, 2012. Applicants are encouraged to submit
their information early as applications will be reviewed and interviews
    scheduled on an on-going basis.
