7 College Skills That Really Matter on a Resume

Posted October 10, 2012
Share:FacebookTwitterGoogle+Email

There are some skills that you learn in college that will most certainly not come in handy when crafting your resume: keg standing, dragging break-ups out for more than a year, turning Ramen into a three-course meal. But some skills you pick up in college are serious signals to employers that you would be a great hire. Consider how you can demonstrate that you have these qualities when you start applying for jobs.

    Communication skills:

Communication comes in many forms, and you’ve been practicing them all since you started college. You talk to peers, as well as superiors, face to face; email with old friends, parents, and professors; and probably use texting, phones, and chat services to stay in touch with people. You’re an expert by now. In the workplace, this is an invaluable skill; you’ll have to communicate with team members and supervisors about projects, and use the appropriate level of formality and authority. On your resume, this skill should shine as you effectively communicate, both through the words and design of the document, that you’re the best fit for this job.

    Software skills:

We’re living in a technology-driven world, and there’s no doubt that your job will require some kind of technical skills. You may have learned some basics in high school, but college is where the software you use becomes more involved and specific to your particular field. On resumes, it’s often appropriate to include a technical skills section outlining the software you know. Just make sure you are actually proficient with the programs you list or note your skill level.

    Writing skills:

Finally, all those college papers are going to pay off! No matter your industry, writing is a critical part of success, and having solid writing skills can put you way ahead of the pack. Whether you’re crafting emails, reports, papers, or press releases, the importance of writing can’t be overemphasized. Every line of your resume is a chance to show off your writing skills. Be sure to use proper grammar, keep everything in the same tense, and double-check for any typos or misspellings.

    Time management:

College is easily the craziest time of a person’s life, schedule-wise. Many people juggle classes, jobs, internships, clubs, and dozens of relationships. Your parents aren’t around to help you keep your activities and assignments straight anymore and you really have to develop your time management skills. Hiring managers look for job candidates who will be able to handle multiple projects and deadlines with minimum supervision. You can show that you’re capable of this on your resume by listing several of your relevant college activities or including a list of duties you performed at a job or internship that required time management skills.

    Networking:

You’ve heard that it’s not about what you know but about who you know. The working world is where you get to experience first-hand just how true that is. But don’t worry; you’re prepared for this. You’ve been building your networking skills in college without even realizing it. Building relationships with people in different majors, classes, and organizations, as well as with professors, has put you in a great position to use those skills for your career. You may not be able to highlight them on your resume, but they may come in handy for getting that resume in front of the right people.

    Leadership skills:

The multitude of college organizations and part-time positions gives students the chance to hone their leadership skills. You don’t have to be student body president to develop the best leading qualities. If you were a section editor at the school paper, social chair of your sorority, or treasurer of even a small club, you’ve got the organizational skills and make-things-happen personality that make you valuable in the workplace. Mention any leadership roles you took on in college or jobs to bring the words "management material" to the minds of employers.

    Integrity:

Sticking to your guns is something that really comes into play once you hit higher education. Peer pressure may have had a hand in your high school life, but it’s kicked up a notch in college with the addition of lots of freedom, lots of alcohol and drugs available, and lots of members of the opposite sex. By the time you’ve finished those four years, you’ve hopefully figured out who you really are and what you really think matters. Even if you made some mistakes, you probably learned some lessons and developed your character into something people respect. On your resume, integrity matters; lying to get a job is never a good idea.

How undergraduate research spelled success for alumnus Gevorg Grigoryan

Research Proactive

A Computational Biologist and Dartmouth professor, Alumnus Gevorg Grigoryan says his undergraduate research at UMBC was crucial to his success.

Kids typically see college as a chance to get away from their parents. That wasn’t the case with alumnus Gevorg Grigoryan (B.S. CS, BioChem ’02), who did research with his dad in UMBC’s Computational Photonics Lab as an undergraduate. In 2000, the pair co-authored a paper proposing a new visualization technique for wave transmissions that uses color to represent amplitude and phase information.

Now an assistant professor of Computer Science and an adjunct assistant professor of Biology at Dartmouth College, Grigoryan stresses the importance of doing research early on. As an undergraduate, he worked in not one, but three, different research labs at UMBC: the Computational Photonics Lab, the VANGOGH Lab, and Dr. Daniel Fabris’ Mass Spectrometry lab.

“It was very easy for an undergrad to get involved in research [at UMBC],” says Grigoryan. “It’s not like that everywhere.”

Working in labs gave Grigoryan essential experience that shaped his career path. When it was time to pick a major, he knew that he wanted to do research like his dad, Vladimir Grigoryan, a Physicist who was working as a Research Scientist at UMBC at the time.

Grigoryan switched from Physics to an ambitious double major in Computer Science and Biochemistry when a professor told him about the emerging, interdisciplinary field of Computational Biology. Combining the principles of biology with computing techniques, the new field dealt with simulating and studying biological systems on the computer.

After graduating from UMBC in 2002, Grigoryan went to MIT for his Ph.D. in Computational Biology under Dr. Amy E. Keating. Later he completed his Post Doc at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School under William DeGrado. His research has focused on examining proteins in order to 1) understand their structure, and to 2) use that understanding to design new proteins that can do things like cure disease.

The analysis and design of proteins is what’s being done in Grigoryan’s research lab at Dartmouth. Specifically, Grigoryan and his students are looking at how protein structure dictates protein-protein recognition and the structural mechanisms of information transformation by allostery. In an interesting twist, Grigoryan now has undergraduate research assistants of his own.

As for collaborations with his dad, Grigoryan says that these days, formal collaborations are hard because of distance; Grigoryan works on molding minds in New Hampshire while his dad works at Ciena Corporation in Maryland. Nevertheless, that doesn’t stop them from having heated scientific discussions over the phone, he says.

Spring Semester 2013 URI Internship Opportunities with the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks

Athletic Field Maintenance and Analysis
Investigate the location and usage pattern of athletic fields under the
jurisdiction of DRP; gather and organize data into a format usable for
GIS and mapping; work with park department staff to develop a basis for
better management and maintenance of field conditions. GIS skills
    required.

Produce Park Maps
Produce park maps for use both by the Permits Division and the general
public; the maps follow a design standard established by the department
and should identify park amenities, names and locations of athletics
fields and other park facilities. GIS mapping skills required.

Research of Pool Facilities, Cost Recovery and Pool Utilization Rates in Other Cities
Research pool systems in cities similar to Baltimore to determine how
they are structured in terms of their facilities, operations, cost, and
revenue generation; provide a written summary of the findings as part
of a public planning process to develop a plan for DRP aquatic
    facilities.

Marketing/Promotions for Park Activities
Assist with updating park events listings, social media sites, web site,
     and calendar of events; develop flyers and promotional materials;
research new avenues for promotion of department events, programs, and
    initiatives.

Green Events Program
Research the incentives employed to encourage “green” events on park
land in other cities; work with department staff to design a pilot
project in Baltimore parks; develop a program description, parameters,
    and “how to” brochure.

Food Waste Recycling
Establish protocols for recycling food waste and other material from
special events catering, including feasibility, number and type of
receptacles, removal schedule, outsourcing options, requirements for
on-site recycling and cost of implementation.

Cylburn Usage Survey
Data collection and analysis on visitors to the Cylburn Arboretum;
conduct visitor surveys; collect traffic data (pedestrian and vehicle)
and on such variables as daily usage, factors related to weather or
    season, and mode of transportation.

Urban Garden Site Selection
Locate vacant properties with potential to become urban gardens
following the existing City Farm model; the project will include
research into available vacant lots, site surveys and interaction with
community associations and churches to determine the suitability of
    sites and potential garden tenants.

Woody Plant Collection Mapping
Update existing maps of the living plant collections and gardens at
Cylburn Arboretum using an ESRI ArcGIS enabled computer; train
naturalist staff and volunteers with updated and editing skills.
    Requires familiarity with ArcView10 software with Publisher extension;
horticultural knowledge helpful but not essential.

Energy Audit of DRP Facilities
Continuation of an ongoing project to locate and conduct on-site review
of electric meters serving park and recreation facilities (park lights,
recreation centers, park buildings, etc.) and make recommendations on
follow-up actions to assure energy efficiency and accountability for the
department. Add these facilities to the department’s GIS-based list of
properties and map their location using GIS tools. GIS skills required.

Review and Implement a Plan for Sustainable Disposal of Biomass Waste
Continuation of an ongoing project to review and begin to implement the
plan for sustainable ways to dispose of the organic waste (dead trees,
wood chips, etc.) gathered in the department’s operations, based upon
best practices in other comparable jurisdictions and institutions and
with special consideration of entrepreneurial opportunities.

GIS Mapping for the TreeBaltimore Program
Continuation of an ongoing project to assist in building a data base
tracking system for the TreeBaltimore program and conduct research on
