Internships in Politics, Public Policy, and Public Service

<Tagline>Earn 7 Credits in Political Science- open to all majors</Tagline>

Are you interested in an internship in politics, public policy, or public administration?

Each spring semester, the UMBC Political Science Department sponsors an internship program in Policy, Politics, and Public Administration. Students accepted into this program obtain internships with local and state legislators, members of Congress, political parties, interest groups, think tanks, lobbyists, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. While gaining practical experience and making important contacts in the Baltimore, Annapolis or Washington areas, as well as taking a companion course, students earn 7 upper-level credits.

Students interested in an internship with Maryland’s legislature, the General Assembly, should try to meet the priority application deadline of Monday, Oct. 22. If we hear from you first, however, General Assembly internships applications may be accepted after this date. The deadline to apply for all other internships is Friday, November 9.

Read more details and download the application instructions at the Political Science Department’s website, http://www.umbc.edu/politicalsci/internships/

For more information, contact me at lhussey@umbc.edu.

Neuroscience Graduate Program (NGP) at the Vollum Institute

    <Tagline>Portland, Oregon</Tagline>

The NGP faculty is large and diverse, but we have kept the number of graduate students relatively small, so grad students have great access to highly accomplished scientists. The NGP faculty includes many highly recognized senior scientists as well as a growing number of outstanding junior faculty members. Our graduates go on to excellent postdoctoral positions and a wide variety of positions in academics and industry as well as science-related jobs like science writing and work with foundations. There are vignettes about the experience of a few of our graduates at our website. Some areas in which we excel include membrane biophysics and structural biology;synaptic physiology, neuronal signaling and gene regulation, neuroendocrinology and neurobiology of disease. As a medical campus, we have strong connections to the clinical departments with their translational and clinical research activities. All students receive a graduate stipend that covers all fees, tuition and living expenses.

We have a great program and we are located in one of the most livable and beautiful cities in the United States Check out the NGP website (www.ohsu.edu/ngp ), and feel free to have your students contact us for more information – I think they will be excited about the quality of our program and the opportunities for a great PhD experience. The application deadline for next fall is December 1, 2012.

Last Fall, a pair of well-respected computer scientists at Stanford offered their AI class for free to people everywhere via the Internet. Over 160,000 students signed up, spurring a worldwide conversation on the impact of online teaching on higher education and sending universities throughout the US scrambling to announce initiatives in this space. I had the good fortune to teach a class for one of the startups and will share my experiences.

Michael L. Littman is a professor of computer scientist at Brown University. He works mainly in reinforcement learning, but has done work in machine learning, game theory, computer networking, partially observable Markov decision process solving, computer solving of analogy problems and other areas. He has held faculty positions in the computer science departments at Duke University and Rutgers University, where he chaired the department from 2009 to 2012. In the summer of 2012 he taught a massive open online course (MOOC) on graph algorithms.

On-Campus Interviews offer students a chance to conveniently interview for professional positions on campus. Employers travel to our campus for the specific purpose of interviewing preselected students for currently open positions. This is a great opportunity to interview with employers specifically interested in UMBC students and offers the advantage of a smaller applicant pool. Interviews take place during the fall and spring. The logistics (viewing positions, applying, signing up for interview time slots, etc.) are all handled via UMBCworks.

Don't miss out on employers coming to UMBC to recruit YOU this fall!
Intern of the Week: Nathaniel Buechler at 98ROCK/WBAL 1090

  <Tagline>Learn more about Nathaniel's summer experience!</Tagline>

    Nathaniel Buechler
Promotions and Digital Productions Intern at 98ROCK/WBAL 1090 in Baltimore, MD
Majors: Graphic Design/Political Science
Minors: International Affairs/German

Briefly describe your internship, including your day-to-day tasks and responsibilities.

My goal is to assist the daily operations of both 98ROCK and WBAL 1090. At my internship, I not only utilize my technical abilities with media technology; I also have the job of representing both stations at events and other promotional appearances. Having a flexible schedule, my work shifts between every day of the week.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and what have you found most challenging?

My greatest challenge has been adapting to the fast-paced environment of the entertainment and news industries. I enjoy the mentorship from the professional expertise that both 98ROCK and WBAL 1090 have. The ability to network and understand the effort that is required for such a level of experience has been unique to my internship. As I recognize what skill set I need to develop to be competitive, I found that my mentors arrive at excellence in a disciplined and intentional manner.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another summer activity?

I usually spent my summer time taking classes. Whereas summer courses can provide the ability to understand the theory that is necessary to achieve success, the practical experience at my internship is unparalleled. I now am able to implement tasks at a higher success rate, which is equally if not more important than the planning portion of projects.

How do you see your summer work as meaningful? Has it given you a chance to work on issues or with communities that matter to you?

The meaning behind my summer work is great since I have the expertise of participating at one of the best radio stations in the country. My understanding of media and communicative practices allows me to make more intelligent decisions in a variety of ways. The most important decisions I can make with this knowledge will influence my ability to market to both large and small audiences.

How has your summer experience shaped the way you think about your power to impact the world?

Already I can see that my impact capacity is greater than it has ever been. I accomplished a major milestone in my marketing capacity in completing my personal website. By having mentors, I was able to bounce ideas and compile one sixth of my website. In addition, an entire facet of my skill set includes the production skills I learned while working at 98ROCK and WBAL 1090.
