About Course Creation

Bb shells for FA2023 are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, field or discussion) listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC), provided that there is an instructor of record listed. As new course sections and/or instructors are added to the SOC by Department Scheduling Coordinators, corresponding Bb shells are automatically generated overnight.

If you are an instructor, and your name is not associated with the course you are teaching in the SOC, please see your Departmental Scheduling Coordinator to resolve the issue. Once you are listed in the SOC, your Bb course shell will be created automatically.

If you and your Department Scheduling Coordinator believe you are correctly assigned as the instructor of record in the SOC and you do not see your course shell in Blackboard, please submit a Request Tracker (RT) ticket via my.umbc.edu/help.

If you need a Bb shell for a research or independent study course, please submit a new course request.

Instructors who teach multiple sections of the same course will find those enrollments merged into one Bb course shell. These sections may be split upon request by an RT ticket, which we recommend submitting at least one week before the semester starts, if not as soon as courses are created in Blackboard. NOTE: Courses should not be split after student grade data and engagement activity is recorded since it will be purged as part of the separation process.

Student enrollment in Bb mirrors the official registration in SA and updates hourly. However, courses are not accessible to students by default until the instructor of record makes them available.

The August release reveals a new update for the Ultra grading system, enabling faculty to grade by question or student, or mix and match the approach. Additional updates to Ultra for August include enhancements to grading, content creation and content management, learner engagement, and reporting.

Grading options include simple scoring, rubrics and inline commenting. Instructors can collapse panels to increase visible space, view SafeAssign originality reports, and post all grades when ready. Subsequent releases will include group submissions, anonymous grading, multiple grades per student, and peer review.

Although Flexible Grading will be available in early August, the functionality will not be enabled in Ultra courses until approximately one week before the FA2023 term starts.

The syllabus is on my webpage at www.umbc.edu/~gobbert (under the Teaching area near the top) with a detailed schedule. This class is specifically designed to be interdisciplinary and accessible to students from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds.

I am planning to offer the class in HyFlex mode with both in-person and online attendance. Other modalities are possible, too, to reach the largest number of users.

The goal is for half of the semester to be an individual project, intended to be in and further your ongoing research, with a report and oral presentation. In this way, the class is supposed to further your research immediately and not distract from it.

Please, forward this to anyone else (user or not) and other students in particular.

Do not hesitate to contact me for information at gobbert@umbc.edu

Request Tracker System Update - RT 5.0.4

We're pleased to share that Request Tracker (rt.umbc.edu) has been updated to the latest version of 5.0.4 on Wednesday, 7/19/2023. This update brings performance and quality of life improvements, and some changes that you may notice include:

Snappier Searches and New search URL shortener

RT will now shorten search URLs by default, so instead of the longer URLs previously seen when using the Query Builder, you will now see a short code in the browser URL bar. This update makes sharing searches much easier and resolves some issues with extremely long search URLs. Any existing search URLs saved as bookmarks should continue to work as normal.

Filters on each search and Jump to Page

When searching for tickets, you'll now see a filter icon for all columns. You can use this as a way to quickly and easily filter down the current search.

We're excited to see how you use these new features and as always, are available if you have any questions or need assistance.
