Five Tips to Protect your UMBC Account Over the past weeks,

<Tagline>Avoid Identity Theft - especially of your own Identity</Tagline>

Over the past weeks, we have seen an increase in compromised accounts. So, here at UMBC’s Division of Information Technology (DoIT), we thought it was imperative to share some tips on safeguarding your UMBC accounts.

Change your password frequently, maybe once a year. Most of the community members at UMBC do not change their passwords yearly. If hackers try to compromise your account more than once over a specific period, they will have less chance of succeeding if you change your password frequently.

Do not use the same password on multiple sites. If you are a victim of a data breach for one of these sites, the hackers now have your password for all those sites, your UMBC account included. After a breach, always update your password. To check if you were involved in a data breach, visit sites such as https://haveibeenpwned.com/. Also, given that the usual purpose of identity theft is the theft of something else (like money), keep an eye on your bank account and/or credit card activity.

Do not share your password with anyone. When trying to keep your account secure, trust no one with our password. “No one” means “NO ONE”. Not your parents, not your kid brother, not your significant other. If someone else needs access to your financial information, please follow the directions at https://sbs.umbc.edu/payments/parent-pin-login/.

Install DUO. DUO is a two-factor authentication available at UMBC to help protect your account. For more information, visit https://wiki.umbc.edu/display/faq/Two-Factor+Authentication+with+DUO. Two-factor authentication is currently one of the most effective and affordable ways to secure your UMBC (or any other) online account.

Create strong passwords. Do not use the name of a person, organization or your favorite anime character. Also,, use uppercase letters, lowercase letters, symbols, and numbers to strengthen your password.

          <colgroup></colgroup>

One method to create a strong password that you can remember is to pick a song or a poem you like and take one line from it: “In the town where I was born, lived a man who sailed the seas …” Take the first letter of the first ten words: “ittwiwblam”. The lowercase ”i” looks like an upside-down exclamation point. We need some uppercase, so how about “b” and “a”? They are easy to remember since they come first in the alphabet.

Password: !ttw!wBlAm

After a few logins, your fingers will remember it without you having to think about it.

Hopefully, these five steps will help you secure your UMBC and other accounts. For more information about password security, visit https://www.openaccessgovernment.org/password-protection/102105/.

Blackboard Courses Scheduled for Server Retirement in FA22

  <Tagline>Courses Before Summer 2019 to be Retired</Tagline>

During Summer 2022, DoIT staff and Blackboard will archive our entire instance of Blackboard, which will save individually backed-up copies of every course and organization through SP2022. Courses offered before and including AY18-19 will be retired by the end of FA2022.

Beginning July 1, courses offered from the following terms will be scheduled for retirement:

Any courses older than five years

Fall 2018

Winter 2019

Spring 2019

Summer 2019

The Blackboard system's overall performance and efficiency will improve by removing files and database transactions from the content server and database. AY19-20, AY20-21, and AY21-22 will remain on the server. Fall 2022 will begin a new academic year of data retention (AY22-23).

FAQs about Course Retirement

Is my content gone forever?

No, Blackboard archived courses captured all course data, files, student submissions, discussions, grades, etc. through SP2022. These archives will reside on a secure cloud storage location.

When will I lose access to courses that are being retired?

The archiving process will begin on July 1st. Faculty can place an RT ticket to have their course content restored through November 2022.

Can I save a copy of my own courses?

Yes -- and it is strongly encouraged! Instructors can export (course content) and/or archive (course content & student data) their courses. You should also download a copy of your gradebook. We recommend saving these files to UMBC’s cloud storage to ensure long-term access in the event you change computer systems.

Can I restore (regain access to) only course content?

Yes. Course content consists of files and course structure (menu, folders, etc.). Faculty can only import course content to an existing Blackboard course shell.

Can I restore course data?

Course data consists of student submissions, discussions, and grades. We generally prefer not to restore full courses to avoid reinstating user accounts and confusing students with old content. If you must restore archived course data, please open an RT ticket with justification included.

How long will you keep the retired courses?

We will keep the retired courses for approximately 2 years after Blackboard archives the courses. Faculty who may need content beyond 2 years should plan to save copies of their exported courses to UMBC Box or other cloud storage.

Six assessment & grading updates for Ultra courses in April

<Tagline>Review upcoming change & plan a course migration over summer</Tagline>

Beginning in late spring and moving into summer, faculty will see extensive upgrades to Ultra courses, particularly in the areas of assessment and grading. This focus aligns with feedback from UMBC faculty to Ultra developers, prioritizing need on key areas. Six updates will be applied to assessments and grading:

Display questions one at at time: Instructors can enable this Settings panel.

Improved feedback display controls: Supporting academic integrity and protecting assessment content is important. If selected, the instructor defines when the student can view their assessment submission.

Post grades automatically: When selected, an assessment grade appears to the student as soon as the attempt is graded.

Calculated numeric question type: This assessment question type is important for math and other STEM courses. Students enter a number as an answer and the answer field will only validate numeric digits.

Download test results: Instructors can download test results for external analysis and evaluation from either the gradebook grid or list views.

Search for student submission receipts: For each attempt a student makes, the instructor can search for a receipt confirmation number. This helps instructors find student submissions when extra verification is needed.

Learn more about these new features and more in our What's New in Assessment & Grading in Ultra webinar on April 19, 2022. We will also offer a dedicated workshop on Grading and the Ultra Gradebook on April 14, 2022.

Further updates to Ultra courses support content creation. Earlier this semester, Ultra courses were updated to more easily allow copying content from Original courses. In April, Ultra courses can now copy content from within the course itself, including folders, documents, tests, assignments, web links, discussions, and journals. This internal copying workflow also includes learning modules and individual items within those learning modules.

Additionally, instructors and students will be able to author and share computer code in the Ultra content editor using a new Code Snippet tool. The content editor identifies eleven programming syntaxes (such as Python, Java, JavaScript, PHP, HTML, and others) to better support STEM courses.

Finally, the Blackboard Instructor app will include a fully Responsive Web Design interface for Ultra courses, allowing faculty to:

build courses, including create and upload content

grade students work, including update assessment settings

communicate, including participate in discussions

The enhanced Blackboard Instructor app will be available in mid-April from the iOS and Android app stores. If you have already downloaded the app then it will be automatically updated if you have this choice enabled on your device or will require a manual update if this choice is not selected.

The next update to our test environment will take place on April 12, 2022. Faculty who are interested in test driving new features before they are released to production should open an RT ticket to request early access. Please watch the FAQs, including the What's New with Ultra page, and myUMBC for additional information about Ultra.

How likely is it that a student will graduate in six years?

<Tagline>Early predictions give us more time to help!</Tagline>

The Data Science Team recently released its set of predictions for the 6-year graduation probabilities of the 2020 Freshman cohort. Below is a snapshot of the current cohort's predictions, in blue, with the 2019 Freshman cohort's predictions, in red.

The vertical axis represents the end of 2nd semester prediction probability; the horizontal axis is the end of the 3rd semester prediction.

The black diagonal line indicates the point on the graph at which the second semester and third semester predictions are equal. If a dot, representing an individual student, rests on the line there was no change in the student's predicted probability of graduating between their second and third semester. Points above the line mean a student's predicted 6-year graduation probability decreased from semester 2 to semester 3.

The group of students above the line, particularly in the Moderate and Low probability color bands, are of concern as their predicted probabilities of graduation have declined over their last two completed semesters.

The 2020 Freshman cohort was the first freshman class during COVID and one of the concerns is the effect COVID may have on student performance in later semesters. From the predictions chart there seems to be reasons for optimism. Looking at the dispersion of points, there is a greater concentration of students in the High and Very High likelihood buckets compared to the 2019 cohort, as shown by the clustering of blue dots in the upper right corner of the chart.

However, some concern may remain. Students whose predictions fall in the Low and Moderate buckets have experienced sharper declines in predicted likelihood to graduate than students from the 2019 cohort (because the blue dots, 2020 cohort, are much further above the diagonal line than the red dots, 2019 cohort).

The diagram we've shown in this post is produced by a tool developed by the Data Science Team. The tool allows staff with broad student success responsibilities to identify groups of students who may need additional support to achieve their goals. The tool is available at analytics.umbc.edu in the student success section. Access to it requires permission.
