Katie Birger (Public Health): "Analyzing Factors Affecting Student Success in Public Health Courses." This new proposal aims to standardize PBHL 300: Research Methods in Health, to address observed inconsistencies that potentially impact students' success in the subsequent PBHL 420 course (Epidemiology). Birger plans to investigate these discrepancies by analyzing data from Blackboard sections of both courses, to identify variables such as instructor differences, textbook usage, attendance, homework submission, and access to Panopto recordings that might affect student success rates. The findings will help standardize effective learning activities and enhance the learning assessment plan. To do so, Birger aims to implement and test evidence-based curriculum changes in PBHL 300 and then monitor student performance in PBHL 420. The overall goal is to improve student knowledge and skills in public health, better preparing them for the workforce or graduate education and enhancing the continuous improvement of the Public Health curriculum.

Additionally, the researchers will investigate the potential benefits of incentivization through micro-credentialing. Through these approaches, Taylor and Passera hope to support both student growth and improve their pathways to academic success.

Rebecca Williams(CS/EE): "Improving Student Visual Literacy & Critical Thinking in CMSC 436/636 (Data Visualization)."This new proposal focusing on course redesign as an intervention to address student misconceptions about visualizations, such as the misunderstanding that simple, easy-to-read, charts are always effective and the belief that data visualizations are entirely objective. Williams' proposed interventions include having students search for, annotate, and critique visualization examples, to supplement those she provides (and models) herself. As such, students are more likely to develop these skills and the process is likely to lead to the long-term retention of these same skills.

Specifically, Bass and Carpenter will use myUMBC's "personal post" functionality to nudge students in their initial exposure to and use of course resources for practice and exam preparation in CHEM 101 "Principles of Chemistry I," which they are co-teaching this semester. DoIT staff have also worked with Math and Psychology faculty to use myUMBC personal posts in this way to scale course-based nudging of students. She's particularly interested in leveraging de-identified UMBC data to inform student analytics projects in two data science courses, IS 428 "Data Mining Techniques and Applications" and IS 733 "Data Mining" in Fall 2023. These include the use of "Spaced Practice" in General Chemistry courses as well as student use of and anonymous feedback about the myUMBC Check My Activity (CMA) feedback tool for students.

Specifically, he has used ungraded practice questions, in terms of points contributing to a final grade, but including correct and incorrect answers displayed to students. Students in his PHYS 122 "Introductory Physics II," who use the practice questions clearly perform better on unit, midterm and final exams, but he'd like to see more students do so. He plans to continue development of his practice questions, but also do more proactive nudging with myUMBC personal posts (similar to Carpenter and Bass in Chemistry described above) to see if and how more students might use and benefit from the practice question bank.

"On behalf of Interim Provost Dauwalder, we're pleased to continue offering these learning analytics mini grants to help faculty use institutional data that might inform their course designs and instruction to the benefit of our students," says Robert Carpenter, associate provost and deputy CIO. "We are excited by these interesting projects and look forward to what the faculty may find."

These one-year learning analytics awards are renewable pending receipt of a final report, paper submitted for publication or conference presentation.
62% of Fall 2023 Blackboard Courses Now Using Ultra

<Tagline>9 of 10 UMBC students are enrolled in an Ultra course</Tagline>

As UMBC finalizes its migration to Ultra, more faculty opted to use the new course experience during FA2023. Specifically, of 1588 total available Blackboard shells, faculty have enabled 991 using Ultra, or ~62%, -- a ten point jump from last year. Although a broad spectrum of disciplines including seven departments and eight languages opted to use Ultra by default, more than half of active Ultra courses were converted from Original to the new format by faculty this semester.

Since instructors must choose to make a course available to students every semester, FA2023 also represents a notable increase in faculty use of Ultra courses at a much higher rate than their use of Original courses -- 89% of Ultra courses are available to students compared to 51% of Original courses. Additionally, Ultra adoption rose in STEM disciplines during FA2023. The College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences saw a 139% increase in Ultra courses from last fall while the College of Engineering and Information Technology increased by 55%.

With more than 200 enhancements and new features in the last year, Ultra courses offer more than 95% feature parity with Original including extensive updates to grading and assessment, content management, and course design functionality. Improvements to the gradebook, question banks, and groups management are key functional areas raised by UMBC faculty and addressed by Anthology.
Next Steps for Ultra at UMBC

The growth in Ultra course creation and faculty adoption fulfills a longstanding promise to the UMBC community to provide a consistent learning experience for students and support Blackboard innovation, beginning in SP2018 when four faculty piloted Ultra. Since that initial exploration, Ultra adoption grew slowly and steadily as faculty opted in to the new version of Blackboard when they felt ready. The pandemic also provided many faculty with an opportunity to try Ultra and move their courses.

We are committed to ensuring a smooth transition for all departments and faculties.

Following this semester, two full terms remain (SP2024 and FA2024) before we finalize the Ultra migration at UMBC. All courses for CAHSS will be automatically created in Ultra for FA2024 and the entire campus will be on Ultra by WT/SP2025.

For departments or disciplines that want to adopt Ultra by default, Blackboard course shells can be designated as Ultra when courses are created. Please open an RT ticket to coordinate your request with Instructional Technology by November 1, 2023 for WT/SP2024 courses and by June 1, 2024 for SU/FA2024 courses.

In mid October, faculty who have not yet migrated to Ultra will automatically receive a development shell with a copy of their FA2023 course that is converted to Ultra. This copy will not have any student enrollments and will not impact the current term. Faculty are encouraged to review the copy and modify the course. If the course conversion is not the best path to Ultra, there are ample Blackboard resources at umbc.edu/go/ultra as well as Instructional Technology support over the next 15 months to build a new course.

Instructional Technology will also work with departments to customize Ultra workshops and provide dedicated support sessions according to faculty schedules or specific use cases for teaching with Ultra. Please open an RT ticket to schedule a training session or request a consultation appointment.

The campus community continues to play a vital role in championing change throughout our Ultra migration. Faculty and student feedback helps shape the ongoing development of Ultra and contributes to the dynamic platform students experience during their education at UMBC.

The conference focused on adapting design to meet the needs of our evolving world, from the rise of deep fakes and battling the spread of extremist propaganda, to the legal and social implications of large language model AI, to supporting the needs of the neuro- and ability- diverse populations we serve.

Penniston's paper analyzed ongoing UMBC efforts to leverage predictive machine learning models to inform empathetic behavioral nudges to support student success. He argues that through intentional, rigorous course design we can align intervention strategies with direct measures of learning at scale and thereby best support our students' individualized needs, while simultaneously improving institutional measures of success, such as reduced DFW and 6-year graduation rates.

Attending the conference was a great professional opportunity for Penniston, who was able to represent his department and the university, learn more from experts within the community, and network with peers. "It's really amazing and humbling to be surrounded at work by folks who encourage and support me to pursue these kinds of opportunities!" said Penniston.

Campus Data Center Outage from Storms Last night

As a result of the storms and campus power blink, the main campus data center briefly lost power around 11:10pm Tuesday night. The power backup systems for the room carried the load through several surges and brownouts, but on one occasions it was unable to recover quickly enough and all data center systems were taken down.

Most user-facing services were back up within a few minutes but the infrastructure groups were working through several issues and validating or correcting the state of systems for the next several hours. As of 2:00am we believe almost everything is back online and fully operational.

One of our central research computing systems, the Ada GPU cluster is only partially online and we will be working to bring it fully back online later this morning.

If you do experience any issues with IT services in the morning, please put in a ticket through https://rt.umbc.eduor call 410-455-3838 and we will quickly address any lingering problems from the storms or outage.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the outages, and as always, if you have any further questions or would like additional information, please feel free to reach out to me directly.
